Zack Snyder Preps Non-Trilogy Star Wars Film -- Vulture

Zack Snyder Is Developing a Star Wars Film Outside the New Trilogy

Back in November, the Los Angeles Times reported that Man of Steel and 300 director Zack Snyder said he had no interest in directing the hotly anticipated seventh Star Wars film. But Vulture has learned that while this may be specifically true — he won’t be doing Episode VII — it was a bit of misdirection: He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers. (Go ahead, say it — you know you want to: “ … an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.” Felt good, didn’t it?)

It’s not clear just where Snyder’s untitled Jedi film would fall within the Star Wars chronology, but one insider expects it will not be considered part of the “numbered” episodes, but rather a stand-alone film set sometime post–Episode VI events, meaning the next phase of the franchise development is much broader than previously thought. For those unfamiliar, Kurosawa’s influential Seven Samurai (The Magnificent Seven was the American remake) tells the tale of a small agrarian town in seventeenth-century Japan that’s routinely pillaged by bandits. Fed up with the annual shakedown, its farmers retain the services of seven masterless samurai to defend their harvest. George Lucas has cited the classic as one of his favorites, telling the Telegraph in 2005 that “it’s a brilliant, brilliant film, and every time I see it I can't believe the magic mixture of a great story and great acting and humour and action and suspense — wonderful cinema. The art of moving pictures is on every frame of this movie.”

In late October of last year, when Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced the acquisition of Lucasfilm, he’d stated that after Episode VII, “our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” Our sources also say that Snyder’s would start production after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Star Wars: Episode VII, and while no director has yet been set for Episode VII, clearly things are taking shape at Lucasfilm. (A spokesperson for Lucasfilm declined comment.)

In the meantime, we are left to ponder the obvious geek questions: Do Snyder’s Jedi carry just a single lightsaber or a long one and a short one, like samurai do? Oh God, why do you torture us so!?

sounds like it could be cool but I'd rather have seen Boba get his own movie.

I'm sure that will happen too. They're going to milk this thing until the end of time, and Joe Johnston has already made it known he'd like to do the Boba Fett one-shot. And he's got tons of Star Wars cred (obviously, since he designed Fett) plus he has some box office credit to burn now, thanks to Captain America. If he doesn't direct it himself, I could see him producing or executive producing it.

Yeah I think you have a good point there about them milking it for all it's worth. Lucasfilm is basically going to be like Marvel or DC pumping out all these movies.

Well I hate most of his work. It better not be all slow mo Jedi. However the concept does sound cool and it could be a very good movie.

Really? I think he's solid. Sucker-Punch kind of failed for me, but at least it had cool looking **** and hot chicks.

It is my assumption that there will be an stylistic guide for all entries into the canon, so that Snyder's more experimental filming techniques won't be a part of this. Also, him developing it doesn't mean he will ultimately be the helmer - he might just produce it.

As to his body of work: I loved his Dawn of the Dead remake, really enjoyed 300 (very visceral, very exciting), liked Watchmen quite a bit (faithful, to a fault, but quite well done) and I think Man of Steel looks exciting and like a visual step forward for him as a director.

I think for a franchise that is 90% action and 10% character like Star Wars, he's a good fit. At least with Snyder, I can always, always follow the on screen action.

Anyone know if this is official? I did a write up at geek sentinel but everything I'm seeing just says 'it is' without any kind of reference to Lucasfilm or where the info is coming from. Anyone know if a legit source has confirmed?

For what its worth, I see..potential for it. But also risk. I try to be optimistic though. I imagine it would be something a bit darker, which would be cool, but have a hard time picturing any kind of SW in that unique style Snyder uses.

I loved Sucker Punch and Dawn of the Dead remains one of the only 2 zombie films I can stand. Other than that I thought 300 was one of the worst things ever put on film and Watchmen was even worse. Just fanboy pandering at it's worst.

the new Superman looks interesting at least (And I hate superman so that's a lot for me to say) and I hope he starts to grow out of his slowmo bleached movie look. He has other movies in him (I really though Suckerpunch was on the edge of greatness despite a few flaws) and I want to see them.

sucker punch was awesome. I think a lot of people just didn't like the ending so they wrote off the whole thing and blocked it from memory.

Could be good. They did a Seven Samurai story on the Clone Wars in Season 2 and it is still one of the best story arcs in the series. (still waiting for all the figures for that one)

That's gonna be a long wait.

A Star Wars version of Seven Samurai would be kinda cool and Snyder has done some good movies.
Would have been interesting to see what he would do with this
