It would have been cool if Lucas had decided not to give Anakin a last name in the prequels. Ani and Shmi were slaves and there was no other real backstory on them, so they could have been known as just Anakin and Shmi.

We, those of us who grew up with the OT, would still have known who Anakin was, but it would've been a way to preserve one of the surprise reveals of Episode V for any future fans who grew up watching the movies in chapter order.

"Skywalker" could have been a name that Obi-Wan chose for Luke when he was hidden with the Lars family. There would've been hints in Episode IV as to who Lukes father was - the fact that he was living on Tatooine with Owen and Beru, the fact that his father owned a lightsaber - but it would've still been a mystery. Obi-Wan says that his apprentice who turned to evil killed Luke's father, so there could be a case made for Luke being the offspring of another Jedi. Plus, there's no mention of a twin sister or brother.

Also, in Empire, when Yoda says, "There is another," newer fans would remember that Luke had a twin, and that maybe his twin is another pupil of Yoda's who will show up in the next movie.

It's certainly not perfect, but it would preserve a little bit of the mystery for future generations who start watching the saga with the prequels.

Would be perfect, if not for the fact that Luke calls Vader "Anakin Skywalker" in RotJ.

I think Obi-Wan does too when he admits to his "alternative facts." But that's just something Lucas would have to fix, and we know how much he loves "fixing" things.

Yeah, without retouching the OT that would have been a tough one to swallow but I see where you're going with it.

I've often thought that having us believe Anakin was actually dead at the end of the 3rd film of the PT would have been better. And I've always thought that one way to do that would have been to have an actual PT villain named Darth Vader that Anakin fights to the death on a lava planet only to (appear) to fall to his death locked in battle with this Vader (who also falls)...little do we know he survived and did so by utilizing the "survival suit" of the now dead Vader (and then even went with the idea that he was Vader, took on the name, to hide his identity (only the Emperor knows for sure...with perhaps Kenobi suspecting it for whatever reason). If kids watched the films in 1-6 order they would assume at the start of the OT that the Vader we see is the Vader Anakin fought and that this old Vader somehow survived...only to find out in Ep 5 that no, he is really Anakin, Luke's father!

Before this battle though we'd still need to see Anakin Skywalker going dark, going against the Jedi and his friend Kenobi. So his conversion to the dark side wasn't just because he fell and used the suit...he was already on that path. He just hated both the Jedi and this Darth Vader guy too whom he sought to eliminate in order to become the top dog for Palpatine. Heck, doing so not only fulfills the "rule of 2" invented in the PT it also satisfies the OT Vader's penchant for offing anyone around him that he doesn't like or respect!
