Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Weta Workshop announced today a partnership under which the innovative design company will develop and market a wide range of authentic prop replicas, collectibles and merchandise based on the upcoming films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The licensing agreement grants Weta access to the library of characters, settings, and stories for the two films. The first products in the collection will be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con at the Weta booth (#3513B) in July 2012, along with a limited number of exclusive pieces that will be available for purchase.

The Weta Workshop collection will be inspired by the scenery, characters and adventures Bilbo Baggins encounters on his remarkable journey in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, slated for release December 14, 2012. Fans and collectors will appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship behind each element of the collection, which will include collectible statues, dioramas, high-end jewelry and art prints.

"We are excited to be returning to Middle-earth,” said Weta Workshop's Academy Award-winning Creative Director, Richard Taylor. “We have been working with Peter Jackson and the product team on the design and production of the movies for the last four years, and we now get the chance to share our passion with fans and collectors. Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are created by the very same artists who have worked on the two films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth."

Being that it is a special Desolation of Smaug preview piece, the Bilbo Baggins, Barrel Rider mini statue (see posts above) will be in stock and available to buy in person in limited quantities from the Weta booth at Comic Con in San Diego next week. Numerous Weta artists will also be in attendance to sign books and collectibles, including Sir Richard Taylor, as well as at least one surprise guest, details to be announced soon ...

Gloin the Dwarf, 1/6th scale statue was also revealed for the first time at the show, but the scene stealer was Azog on Warg, a massive 1/6th scale statue which, at two feet long and seventeen inches tall, literally dwarfs ever other piece in the line so far (if you'll forgive the pun).

And from The Lord of the Rings, an Arwen mini figure was revealed, with release details pending.

The entire Weta booth was loomed over by a giant life-size+ Azog himself, under which actor Manu Bennett, who played the character via motion capture performance for the films, poses below...

Yeah, there aren't too many collectors with pockets that deep (me included). Tim from Weta posted in another forum yesterday that just over half of the edition of Azogs have been pre-ordered in the first 24 hours, so even at that price I expect it will sell out soon.

That is good news. I want them to do well so we keep seeing more product. I just wish I could afford more of it! And thanks for posting these updates - there are still a few of us LOTR/Hobbit colletors on here.

Looking ahead, here's what Tim Launder, head honcho of Weta's collectibles arm, has revealed is on tap for the remainder of 2013 ...

October has arrived and we'll be launching over 20 new products before Xmas; prop replicas, collectibles, art prints, jewelry, t-shirts, leather goods and a few surprises.

We have already promised to launch the following new products from the Desolation of Smaug in October :

Daggers of Tauriel
Bow and arrow of Tauriel
Thranduil
Tauriel

The first production run of these 4 items will be in-stock in Oct - Nov, so if you wish to get your order shipped before Xmas, we recommend you order immediately. The second production run will arrive in stock in Dec / Jan, however it is unlikely these will be shipped out in time for Xmas.

The same goes with any of our other in-stock products, if you wish to ensure delivery before Xmas, we strongly recommend placing your orders by 22 Nov. Last year we shipped out orders on the 12th of Dec and many of them did not arrive until a month later, due to the Xmas postal rush.

No wonder Evangeline is smiling, the statue is not only a really good likeness but it's very dynamic as well.

Hanging upside down in a cave on Hoth.
I understand that Weta does stuff for the Hobbit movie but I wish GG would get their act together and get some more Hobbit busts out! I think I may pick up the barrel riders mini statues or the othe mini statues. The 1/6 scale are out of my price range.

Whoa, here comes another one! A Wizard is never late. He arrives precisely when he means to ... and that is right now, or more accurately, when pre-orders are fulfilled in the new year. ;) Here comes the next in the 1/6th statue line from The Hobbit: Radagast the Brown, based on the character played by Doctor Who alumni Sylvester McCoy. How appropriate considering the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebrations going on this week!

Look closely and you can see some of his animal friends photobombing the collectible. ;)
