Were there any Power Of The Force TV commercials?

There's a few people that remember one, but as far as I know it has never surfaced. I posted a thread several years ago on the site retrojunk, asking about it, as over the years quite a few commercials have been unearthed there including the Droids commercial that had been lost for a time. I still hold out hope that some day this commercial will be found as I'd love to see it and if it brings back any memory of me seeing it personally at all.

I never actually saw a POTF2 commercial on TV, but apparently there is at least one:
Star Wars / Power Of The Force (POTF2) action figures commercial - Kenner 1995 - YouTube

There was actually a few of them, but I don't recall seeing them myself that much either. I guess because I wasn't watching a lot of children's T.V. shows at the time. :)

Here's a few more of them from a Kenner/Hasbro retailer VHS tape I picked up last year and digitized. It also has some from their other lines at the time.

There's an urban legend of a POTF coin commercial existing. Apparently, coins are falling down from the skye like rain droplets and kids are eagerly picking them up. It would probably look like a twinkling golden shower of DROIDS coins. Hopefully, the commercial will be unearthed someday.

I seem to recall this one or something similar, I don't remember if it was just for the figures packed with coins or if it was about the free coin offer.

I definetely remember seeing this during Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. Would have been 1985 or 1986 (I remember the house I was living in at the time). The commercial surprised me, because I had never seen one for Star Wars toys before (I never saw any of those Kenner ads you can find on Youtube in abundance, maybe they didn't run in Canada).

update

Hello.
I saw your post.
Yes, there are few that existed. I saw most of them on TV and some at stores that ran them on a loop.
Hasbro produced a few under Kenner logo until Episode 1. Then, all commercials were under Hasbro.
What I recall were 3-4 under Power of the Force, one under Shadows of the Empire, 2 under Original Trilogy Collection and perhaps a couple more, but I have to check.
Plus there were some for Galoob as well.

As to vintage Kenner, I saw some, but not all. They made a lot of them back then for each film from 1978-1984.

If anyone is interested in a copy, please e-mail me at drsw3@yahoo.com. PMs are full. Thank you.

There was also a rad Ewoks commercial that Gus posted on Starwars.com a few years ago, but it has been pulled down since. It featured some unproduced figures and the Battle Wagon.

I think the OP was asking about vintage POTF, not POTF2.

Man that sounds awesome.

I remeber seeing this commercial while getting ready for school one morning. I immediately called my friend to let him know what I saw, and remember commenting to him that I saw a Luke Poncho figure (we had always wondered why there was a Leia and Han Endor, but no Luke Endor at least at that time.) Then his mom cussed me out for calling so early in the morning. :wtf:

With so many people distinctly remembering this commercial, I too am surprised someone hasn't been able to turn this thing up. I say we sticky this thread until we find it!!

No urban legend about it. The commercial definitely was real, and I vividly remember seeing it. The first time I saw the commercial, I initially got excited thinking it was a commercial for some new toy line based on the tv miniseries "V" that was popular during 1984, because the giant floating POTF coins in the sky reminded me of the V motherships. Then after a few seconds I realized it was a Star Wars commercial promoting the POTF line and the idea of collecting all the coins.

So frustrating. Enough people had their VCRs running by 1984. Surely someone out there has this.

I watched about 45 mins of toy commercials that ran on a loop on Celebrations V & VI at the Hasbro booth and did not see any vintage POTF commercials.
I told the guy in charge at the booth that they should consider making a DVD of all the commercials ever made by Kenner (assuming they have them ALL and in good quality) and give it away for free as a POP promotion.
Do you guys think it would be a good idea?

There already is a fan-made one and it's great! :) Missing the elusive POTF commercial, of course. I wonder if there has been any new commercials discovered since making it.

Hillarious!!

I seem to recall a POTF commercial that included the Luke Stormtrooper. I only caught a glimpse of it and wasn't sure what I had seen. My last year getting SW figures was the Christmas of 85. I was 12. After that, I was into baseball. I never new anything about POTF and thought I had the complete figure collection, with the exception of the 2 POTF ewoks that appeared on the card backs before the rest of the wave did. Anyway, I too, was getting ready for school and I guess I heard the standard SW commercial music or the name Star Wars and turned to see it, only to catch a glimpse. It was surreal because I was didn't understand what I had seen. Since I wasn't into it anymore, I mentally dismissed it and it was until around 96 when I retired and returned from minor league baseball, that I found out the truth. I was learning to use the Internet and my sis, who collect Barbie dolls was showing me how to search. She told me to think of something and type it in. Since we were at her place with all of these dolls everywhere, I thought of my old collection. I typed in Star Wars action figure and that old SW action figure archive popped up. I was shocked to see that there were more figure made that I didn't have. I freaked out when I saw the Luke Stormtrooper. Needless to saw, I went straight back to my mom's place and found 99% of my figures in the exact same condition I left them in. This was due to my day's foresight and selfishness not to let younger cousins destroy or new swipe them. Funny!

Has a real "My mate received a rocket firing Fett in the mail" feel to it.

Missing the elusive POTF commercial, of course.

Hasbro booth at CV & VI didin't have them and this DVD you have also does not have them... Maybe it does exist but I am starting to believe it is a Jedi mind trick played on our good friends that remembered seeing it (like Luke throwing the grappling hook twice or like SydSwans says: RF Fett received in the mail).

I distinctly remember this commercial....and I have been searching the Internet for years and have just about given up hope. The sad thing is that I had it on VHS when I taped an episode of Robotech, but taped over it later on. The thing I remember most (other than the falling coins) was the camera shot flying over all the vehicles, and you could see the a-wing and the skiff. SOMEONE on Earth must have this and can post it. I bet someone who taped all the Robotech episodes has it

It may still turn up. The Early Bird commercial that's out there now was an urban legend until I bought it on a reel from a former Kenner employee. It sat in my closet for years until Chris had it digitized and added to that DVD he made.

Anybody rip this one? I don't think I have a copy of that.

John

If they didn't release a POTF ad, then it's certainly a good example of false memories, as rumors of the ad pre-date me as well. I would point out that it is always described in the same way though, which could either be evidence of it being a very memorable ad, or evidence that everyone is being influenced by the same sources. Personally, I have no reason to doubt that it exists. In either case, here are some old Usenet threads on it, if anyone's interested in some old school discussion, from 1998 and 2000, respectively:

I'm guessing the VHS copies of this commercial are in the same box in everyone's attic that remembers having a rocket firing Fett lol

There's a bunch of collectors in those 1998 and 2000 usenet threads that "distinctly remember" seeing this coin commercial. And it's always described the same way; coins floating in the sky, spinning and falling down into a neighborhood.

There's at least 4 posters in this thread that claim to have seen it first hand as well: dutchg, simdog, pizzathehut, and shabby_blue. Jesus, why can't you guys use your real names. But anyways, they describe it the same way like from the rasscv threads; coins falling down from the sky. It would be interesting if these newer guys have/had any history being on usenet or not. If not, then their memories weren't cross contaminated. I find it especially interesting that Shabby_blue remembers seeing a coin float in the sky like a V spaceship and a poster on usenet described the commercial as coins invading a neighborhood. Such a similar description for 2 threads that are almost 15 years apart.

I want to believe in the existence of this commercial so all the naysayers need to stop it with all the rocket fett comparisons. :)

I have never used usenet or whatever, but I remember this commercial. I remember seeing it before going to school one morning. I don't think it was for POTF figures, but more likely for the coin mail away offer. I have no way, of course, to prove it, but I am willing to bet my whole collection on its existence.
The descriptions are accurate. There were coins flying through a neighborhood, landing into mail boxes. I was a Jedi/POTF era kid, so this commercial left quite a mark on me.

Interesting. At least for me, this is the first time someone mentioned the coins landing in mail boxes. The urban legend continues to grow. I'm almost hoping this commercial never gets discovered because it'll never live up to the hype. Kind of like episode I.

I remember about 1985/86 a commercial with silver coins etc. floating through the air ... but it was for Dairy Queen free blizzards ... I might have that on a VHS tape, .... would be funny if it's a mix of different memories people remember??? I know for a long time I thought there was a Kenner Jedi commercial that advertized the Skiff ... and two kids playing and had the figures fall down into a can in the middle of a sand box etc. ... this is what I really saw ... no skiff ... but the rest was close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP-eMtg3Xew so there could be a coin commercial ... as short lived as the promo was ... I doubt it aired much if it is real.

Wow Russ! I've never seen that Revenge rough cut version. This would be the one you saw on T.V. The person who uploaded that rough cut said
More to come... :)
I wonder if he could have the POTF commercial from whatever source he got that.

I've already elaborated on my recollection of watching a POTF commercial in a previous RS thread from a few years ago, so there's no real point in restating the details of it again here. The point I would like to emphasize is that I was 12 when I saw it, which means I had a fairly good grip on reality (I didn't "make it up') and I had zero interest in Star Wars toys at that point (i.e. Rocket Fett logic doesn't apply here-- it's not like I was 6 and was enamored with the toys and the mysterious, new mail away figure). I did have a robust interest in collecting coins, which is why I remember the commercial. It would be great if the commercial turned up again, but I don't need it as any kind of validation that it existed in the first place.

That is actually my channel. ;)

I don't believe there are any POTF commercials in what I have though... Sorry guys! If I ever do run into any, I'll let you guys know.
