Vintage customs thread

Those look great. At some point I’ll be able to get back into some customs. I feel like I’m not holding up my end of the bargain.

I'm hoping to find those guys. I have a couple waiting to be customized, but I can't come up with any great ideas for them.

Maybe a dirty 3PO deco? Gold with a dark wash?

Maybe a 4Lom head and a 4Lom color deco?

Just stopped by an ollies and found a ton of NED-B figures.

My first thought was : " I hope jedi_ds has some good ideas!"

Thanks for the pic! I am really intrigued by your spread of customs. I think you've been holding out on us. ;)

What is the black figure on its back with NED-B legs? Love the shore trooper/vintage biker scout combo. At least I think it is a shore trooper helmet.

What is the head you used on the Grand Inquisitor body to the left and back of the pic?

Okay, I'll stop asking questions. Love your ideas.

That was my VaderJay style pic ;)

Black figure is a 3D Printed HK 87 before the retro one came out (retro is better)
The head is from a HealeyMade figure called Assassin
yes good spot, its a shore trooper on a retro biker scout

Tried a few heads that I have .. still working on it
I noticed you used Green Stuff to enhance Mauls horns. Looks great BTW!

I just ordered some Green Stuff and look forward to trying it out. I've only used Milliput in the past.

That is a huge upgrade to retro Maul. Great sculpting.

He doesn't look like baby deer Maul any more, but antler Maul!

Once again, working down Ollie's overstock, I was able to do a quick couple of heads swaps to recreate a version of the novel art "Splinter of the Mind's Eye". I take any opportunity to put Luke and Leia in different outfits.

I really like the sculpt they did for 5th Brother. While the charature was underused in the series, I think they did a great job on his proportions as a figure. Even with his large Gene Simmons-like boots.

So that's the one you were referring to!

Yes, that's artwork from the Legends Thrawn trilogy, epic collection if I recall correctly.

Well, I got tired waiting for one of these makers to create one, so I decided to make my own custom Skyhopper Pilot until someone did. Using a beat-up vintage Palitoy Action Force Mission Pilot, I repainted the helmet, collar, zippers, and hands, and touched up the boots and belt. I tried to match the color scheme of Colin Cantwell's originals as close as possible. The reason why I chose this particular figure is its the only 5 POA figure that is in scale with Vintage Star Wars, and because it was red. Besides, Palitoy also made Star Wars toys in the UK.

I saw a custom a few days ago and couldn't identify the body used.umtul your post. It was a Palitoy Action Force Mission Pilot!

This looks great!

I acquired this guy and he was in rough shape. Scraped ear and mouth, missing one foot and fingers on both hands.

He needed a new life. I wanted him to have the look like a grizzled veteran of the Battle at Endor.

I made molds from a Chief Chirpa in good shape then used Greenstuff to repair the limbs and create the vest, bandoleers and mohawk.

I left his scraped ear and mouth as it looks like scares from a blaster or explosion.

I'd like to create a couple more with bits and pieces from vintage stormtrooper armor to get the look of ewok conquerors.

Since we didn't win him with the cantina, I decided to make him myself.

Arleil Schous

I had finished the head sculpt only then to learn a new technique on how to make it look more wild like in the photos. So unfortunately I didn't get the finished look on the head that the hair on the hands received.

I mirror your astromech sticker comment. I want to design some of my own colors but don't have the talent.

Then I remembered my daughter is a graphic designer and she told me she could do it.

Now I just have to get off my duff and send her a template to manipulate.

I have always admired the art of Ralph McQuarrie and wanted some customs inspired by him.

I've been working on this piece

The fact that Fett's original concept was white to match an elite stormtrooper background story, really makes the prequels and Empire come together.

I took some time sculpting his back pack and various greeblies on his uniform.

Another angle. I haven't crafted his cloak yet as I'm still trying to decide how to depict the two-tone tan colors from the artwork.

I had done concept Lando before, but wasn't happy with the outcome. So I redid him to better fit how I envisioned my custom looking in this screen

The Bespin Guards were fun to do, but figuring out how I wanted to sew the tunics was some work. Still not sure if I liked the way they turned out. I wanted to use vinyl tunics, but cloth matched the Kenner ascetic better with this design.

I used a couple of different simple Vader customs as stand-ins for the shots, but would love to get my hands on a concept Vader head to place on a vintage body
I've seen this done in the 12" and thought it looked so cool!

It's great to see any customs, vintage style is a treat but when you take a McQuarrie painting as a theme and knock all the figures out of the park, that's really special. This is a fantastic superfun example of the reason why Star Wars customizing is so cool. I looked for a Snack Pack emoji but RS doesn't seem to have that. Shame..... because it would be useful to convey this message...

I've attempted then scrapped trying to sculpt Garindan's head multiple times. I could never get it the way I wanted it. I took the cowards way out and swapped a POTF2 head.

Great job on your sculpt! Looks like you took the head from an Emperor, maybe?

Thank you! You're right - it's the head from an Emperor with Green Stuff for the nose and goggles. The body was a General Madine and the arms were from Nien Nunb. The cloak was from my box of custom fodder, but I think originally from a Carnor Jax.

Posted this pic in the wrong place, but meant to post it here. Anyway, here’s another custom droid…

Sweet various alien rebel officers! Which head did you use for the purple guy?

Great paint job on the mon calamari's head.

How did you get a clear asteomech dome for that custom next to the mon calamari?

I'm building my rebel naval officers with the latest being the Gand.

I think that purple head comes from a green lantern figure. The clear dome was a vintage r2 that I stripped. I have another that’s a cool green and brown swirl. Oh, and that Mon cal is a potf2 figure head - not my work. Definitely approve of the naval officers!

Chewie was looking forlorn and lonely. Since this last custom, he seems much happier.

I wanted a female wookie and decided to use greenstuff in stages on a Final Faction female frame.

I am almost finished up with a Kenner styled vintage Tusken Female Warrior. In between the time I was waiting for paint to dry or greenstuff to cure, I worked on a couple of random EU cantina patrons.

The non-duro was a result if excess greenstuff I didn't want to waste, so I slowly built an alien head that looks like a cross between an Ishi-Tib and heaven knows what else.... maybe a rhino-parrot.

I could even say there's a slight mudhorn vibe on that one, pretty cool whatever it is!

Took some time and created a cantina patron and a new droid that matched a sticker I had. I need to figure out how to either make my own stickers or I need to purchase some more. I like making these funky droids.

@obiwozkenobi

You mentioned you'd like to design your own stickers for R2 units.

I figured out a way to do it for those of us who might be low tech, time impaired, or design impaired.

I purchased 8.5"×11" sticker paper to feed through a laser printer.

If you go to this website (erikstormtroopers)
Here , you can download a black and white copy of an R2 sticker. Save it as a 265 bit jpeg, not a regular jpeg. For some reason it doesn't work well as a standard jpeg on my computer.

You can then open the file up in the simple "paint app" found in windows.
Using the fill tool (paint can looking icon) you can start choosing colors and filling in the sticker with said colors.

Once I create one I like, I save it and insert it into a blank Word document. Keeping the aspect ratio, you'll have to adjust the size to about 3.05" in length to get it the right size for an R2 figure.

I then create as many as I can fit on a 8.5"×11" sheet in the blank Word document.

Here are some examples cut from the sheet:
