Here comes another failed Star Wars movie 😝

Ryan Gosling Will Lead ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Into Uncharted Territory

Ryan Gosling is set to lead a new Star Wars movie, titled ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ with production set to begin this fall

Ryan Gosling is set to lead a new Star Wars film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, with production set to begin this fall. Shawn Levy, who recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine, will direct the project, which will release in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The announcement was made by Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni at the annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. According to a press release, the new installment in the franchise will take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker and is described as an “entirely new adventure” featuring “all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”

“Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it. There’s so much creativity and imagination in this room and there’s so much love. It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us,” said Gosling, who appeared at the event alongside Levy. “The force is a mysterious thing, but, as I’m here, the force is the fans. All we can hope for is, ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Speaking to fans, Levy confirmed the uncharted territory for the upcoming film, “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”

Starfighter will hit theaters a year after the Mandalorian spinoff The Mandalorian & Grogu, which premieres May 22, 2026.

I'm quite excited by this. Is this perhaps the cancelled Patty Jenkins project being rekindled?

Whatever happpens, i'll go see it, but i hope to god there is a good story with it.

Interesting. I like Gosling. Hopefully they can go somewhere interesting with this. Leave any ST stuff behind.

Gosling isn't a draw for me, I'd have been just fine with a nobody. I am curious if this is a rework of Jenkin's Rogue Squadron Movie, as I recall it too was supposedly post ST or near that timeframe. And by that very nature I don't know how you don't consider it a sequel, or even a prequel to set up Rey's return as a Jedi Master. My question is who' the bad guys? With the FO basically the fallen empire of this new era who fills that role of antagonist regime? Are we going to get yet another rehash of Rebellion/New Republic against the New Empire/FO remnant? Or can we get a totally new dynamic, possibly the Chiss Ascendancy? Or are they prepared to go boldly with the Far Outsiders?

It being set withing that era related to the ST I've got no interest, if it were 30 years after Exogol maybe. I think I would have preferred it set post ROTJ and help build that era out more.

I was super excited for this the second I saw it. My reaction was, simply put, "Holy crap, this must be what the Rogue Squadron movie evolved into!" Top Gun Star Wars? Yes, please! A Rogue Squadron movie has soo much potential it's absurd. Ryan Gosling? Hell yeah! This is gonna be GREAT!

...and then I read sequel era timeframe, and any interest I had disappeared faster than ice cream in July.

What an astounding...misstep. You had a slam dunk on your hands, setting it in OT era or even post ROTJ era to expand that timeframe and even cross over with Mando movies. People would love that; it would be almost uniform praise in concept. And yet again, yet again, Disney comes along and wants controversy and divisiveness when there didn't have to be. They legitimately just want it now; I'm convinced of it. RDJ as Doom. Female Silver Surfer. New Sequel Era movie. Rey movie...that I'm still not convinced is actually happening. None of these decisions had to happen when there are blatantly non-controversial options on the table; of course, they know better. At this point, they absolutely know better. How could they not be aware of what sells and what causes disruption? I'm 100% convinced they do it on purpose TO generate outrage because outrage equals more buzz than any marketing campaign can cook up. And let's be honest, sad as it is, they're even aware of a lot of the naysaying going on to rage view these things too. What do they care if you like or hate it? They just care if you SEE it.

...it's one of the reasons why I absolutely, positively, refuse to ever watch Rings of Power. I won't contribute even a view.

Had a character I was working around with that was a retired HoloPic actor that I had always imagined Gosling playing.

Can definitely see him as a pilot too but I wonder what the "mission" is? It'll be the first time we see the world post ROS but I imagine no real government has been set-up yet.

I'm interested to see where they go with this. Like others my immediate thoughts were this is what was originally what started out as the Rogue Squadron movie. If it's 5 years after TROS and then will we see Oscar Isaac return as Poe Dameron in a mentor/pilot instructor role?

My first thought when I heard Ryan Gosling was, 'Great. More celebrity casting." Then I thought the best character for him would be Tycho Celchu. As much as I wish they were going in this direction, they're probably not.

While I'm not big on Ryan that actually doesn't sound too terrible of casting. I think the biggest concern/issue of setting anything so close to the OT, which i would enjoy seeing btw, is they'd basically have to recast every pilot as they're all too old. The only few exceptions are obscure barely seen ones like Jake Farrell, Arvel Crynyd Keyan Farlander. You couldn't even bring Marrick back unless it pre R1, which I prefer all this to take place during New Republic era anyway. Not go back even further in time. But it would feel odd not to see Wedge pop up. Though being this is supposedly not connected, maybe Ryan's character is on the other side of the Galaxy thus wouldn't be running into anyone know anyway?

I am wondering why they're going this path, because of Top Gun Mavrick success? Cuz that's old news now. I firmly believe that Star Wars requires more than just one aspect of something, and for me the appeal of the IP has always been Jedi/Sith dynamic. Second was Bounty Hunters. X-Wing stuff was only fun for me for a few scenes, then what, senate talk? The name Starfighter implies a heavy use of said thing, but if it encompasses several major space battles, I guess that can be seen as a win. We've not had that in a long time, and the one in RoS wasn't that great.

It has huge potential to get the whole ST era and beyond on track. Something new could be good

It's hard to even have an opinion on this with knowing nothing but the one actor, director and the supposed title, which I find hilariously bad no matter if it's about pilots or if it's a "new" name like Skywalker, Starkiller ... I kind of hope it's a character name, rather than a pilot movie.

Get back to Lucas-SW, it's what we all fell in love with from the beginning anyway.

But I'll happily change my mind, if it's pilots and it turns out good.

I heard that an image of a section of a new starfighter was shown during the announcement.

Does anyone here have a screen grab or a photo they took at the panel?

So the thing is...and I'm just echoing what I already said here...

I had hope for this. I had a LOT of hope for this, actually. Excellent cast, and I always...presumed...this was what came of the pseudo-cancelled (suppose "shelved" would be the more apt term) Rogue Squadron movie. That's a formula for success. So it's beyond me why they'd make this ST era. I cannot wrap my head around why they'd see a pitch that's entirely devoid of controversy...and say, "But how can we make it controversial?" Just set this in the OT era and you're golden; nobody would have an issue. Nobody. Even doing it within Mando-post OT is basically just an OT epilogue...do that! That would be fine too. But ST? Like...why? Seriously, why would you ever do that unless you're completely detached from your fanbase? Surely they know, surely they're aware that the ST is about as far from beloved as you can get.

Now, with that said...could it be executed well? Absolutely. If you stay as FAR AWAY from actually referencing the ST as you can, yeah, it won't even matter. What are the odds of that? I really don't know, but I lean toward unlikely. I mean, it appeared that RDJ's Doom would just be an Iron Man knockoff of Doom...and now it seems the exact opposite. Now it looks like he's playing a proper Doom, so who knows?

But I'm commenting here because...I actually like the look of this photo, Waterworld comparisons notwithstanding. SW has criminally underutilized water planets or, really, water in general. There are really only three sequences on film: Otoh Gunga/Naboo core, Kamino (most of which is indoor), and EP9's "water" duel. So I'm excited to see more aquatic environments.

As I mentioned elsewhere I'd kind of like it to be Manaan from KotOR, but would also be okay with Mon Cala. I wouldn't think it would be Kamino as there's likely a standing order not to go there ever since Order 66. But who knows maybe it's all connected to cloning again, somehow.

If it's an all new planet, which I totally expect for licensing reasons, then that's fine too. The fan theories I've red are shall I say interesting to say the least, but I truly don't think they would go there since this is supposed to be unconnected as neither a prequel or sequel. And so far most of their attempts at memberberries haven't really paid off very well so I feel it would be wise to start totally fresh and have zero acknowledgement of previous characters, even EU ones.

I agree, MysterioMaximus. It's crazy that they're gonna put out a ST product after gaining back some good will with Andor. I see ZERO upside to it.
If they simply set this in the Mando era, they could give it the classic aesthetic and probably not change a thing. As is, I'll just wait for streaming. I have no intention of supporting anything sequel trilogy-related. And that isn't a political stance. I'm not "boycotting." I didn't go see Indiana Jones 5 either. (If such a movie even exists)
I just don't enjoy that timeline. It doesn't draw me in, and I cannot escape the feeling that everything happening revolves around a terrible premise. That the death of the Emperor was at the hands of a Palpatine and Han was a deadbeat and nothing from the OT mattered and Exogol and basically every plot point from those movies.

And I'm not unique. I bet a lot of fans feel the same way. Just putting a name on a product no longer guarantees success. Ask Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Joker, The Crow, numerous Marvel movies, etc.

I think it will be interesting to see all the average moviegoers questions about ho this is relate to the ST, or Mandoverse being that those entries would have been the last thing watched. Yet the time jumps all over the place between shows is also likely why they lost the average viewer as it becomes like work much like the MCU's multiverse. Some of it is a bit too confusing for them to keep track of.

I wonder if they will bring back the crawl for this in order to give the audience an idea of when it takes place.

First movie still:

This is set during the ST or post?
Post.
Rumor now flying around after Amy Adams was cast, (don't quote me) is supposedly;

Legend's Luke and Mara Jade's
a7s4rm.gif
until now unknown secret force-sensitive Kid (who didn't die when failed, hopeless, coward, Disney Luke caused the slaughter at his academy). Survived, and now marked with bounties on his head, is being secretly transported by dashing rogue Joe Starfighter, to the new idealized true Jedi Master Rey Skywalker, for training.
(which sets up for the upcoming Rey trilogy)

Though wasn't Luke's kid named Ben after Ben Kenobi? Hasn't that been taken, so is this kid named after Yoda?
And isn't that the plot of S1-S2 Mandalorian?

Sadly I can't destinguish that rinse-repeat plot as something the Disney Story Group, or the worst wishful thinking "fan" would come up with. :ROFLMAO:

I really hope that is not true. It just makes no sense at all. If Mara was around at the time of the ST why did she not help? You could maybe argue she was in hiding to protect the kid and Kylo believed she died when he burnt down Luke's Jedi Academy. Why would Mara, an experienced Jedi send her kid to be trained by a less experienced Jedi in Rey? Mara could train them better.
If Luke was married to Mara and had a kid then why would he lose all hope and run off to Ahch-To to die? No, Luke and Mara would have fought protect their child and to bring down the First Order.
Also Gosling taking a force sensitive child to a Jedi whilst avoiding the bad guys is pretty much the same story as a bounty hunter trying to avoid the bad guys whilst taking a force sensitive child to a Jedi Master

Something something something...Kathleen Kennedy is out at Lucasfilm...something something something...no, really, this time it's real....something something something...no, really really, guys, I swear this time...something something something...and Tom Cruise directed a lightsaber fight.

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

What a strange week for SW info. Apparently Kennedy really is out this time, but considering that's been said more times than days I've been alive, ah, I'll believe it when it happens.

What's more interesting to me is this supposed Tom Cruise direct lightsaber fight for Starfighter. And what's ACTUALLY interesting about that, to me, isn't Tom Cruise; it's...there's a lightsaber fight in Starfighter?

And I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Because, personally, I wouldn't expect that from a film called "Starfighter," so the concern is...do they just not have confidence in anything without lightsabers? Did they just force this in?

Who knows, but I'll give it a chance. Maybe. If it's not REALLY ST based. I mean, yeah, it is, but what I mean is, hoping you can't even tell. If you can, however, I might not even bother seeing it. It all depends.

I think it was the Mummy where Tom Cruise just kind of took over directing a large portion of the shot. It ended up being a disaster.

If they at least have half a brain, they'd introduce Nym in the movie. Him and his gang, especially Jinkins(the Bith).
