Hey guys,
I haven't ever frequented this part of the forums because it's been so long since there's been a Star Wars game that I really liked, but I thought I'd share my honest review here. I don't want to bring a lot of negativity to the thread and for those who are enjoying the game that's awesome, and you're probably either more skilled than me, have more patience or just don't get as bothered by things, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I, on the other hand, can't even really convey my disappointment for this game, and I was really looking forward to it. Not trying to bring anyone down here, but this was my honest review:
Now that I've had time to play it, probably put a good 5 or 6 hours into it, I'm freaking p*ssed that I spent $70 on this piece of trash. And this is coming from someone who was convinced that even if it was bad, it was gonna be good, because it's the first Star Wars open world.
For one, it's a dead open world, and not even very open as there are roadblocks and such all over the place that severely limit where you can actually explore. I say 'dead' because the NPCs aren't even NPCs, they're more like scenery. You can't interact with hardly any of them. You can't even bump into them, they just don't even acknowledge you and you can't walk through them. There are only a select few that are marked that you can actually talk to.
The pathfinding is absolutely terrible. You have a marker and you don't know if it's on the upper level, mid level, or lower level, so you're looking all around, trying to find a path that will lead you there. They can't just have the option of having an actual path you can follow if you get stuck, so I'm spending much of my time just wandering around aimlessly. Total waste of time. And if it were a living world where you could actually interact with people and things, there would be some kind of incentive to explore, but that is missing entirely.
So far the missions I've done for the main quest have all been completely stealth-based. Not with a steal 'option' but to where if you get seen at all (even at times when they somehow see you and you're completely hidden), you die. A little stealth is okay but this has been the majority of the gameplay so far. Sorry, just not my thing. A well-known quote from Han Solo after they arrived at the Death Star comes to mind.
Ok let's talk about the graphics. They'd be acceptable if this game came out five years ago. This is something that looks like it should be on PS4 (I'm playing on PS5). Just nothing at all impressive about it, and they don't stand up to the standards of today.
Ok, what I liked:
- walking around in the Imperial base, which had many elements I recognized from the Death Star, so that was a rare moment that really put me in the game and made all the other bs almost feel worth it. Almost.
- the environments, so far (I saw Canto Bight and the second planet, whatever it was, were pretty cool, other than the dead NPCs who may as well not be there because they really don't give the game any life so to speak
- the space flight was actually really cool, simply because the controls were set up in such a way that it made sense, was intuitive, and made the ship easy to control and get to go where you want it to or do what you want it to. I know 'simulator' fans would probably complain about the lack of realism there, but for me it was just perfect, so props at least for how they handled that.
I wish I could think of anything else good to say about it, other than that it's Star Wars. Honestly I was under the delusion that that would be enough for me, even though I didn't really get into the Fallen Order series. I thought this being open world would give it a little more freedom and add an extra element to it, but if anything it feels more constrained, or just as constrained.
It really sucks to be writing this. Not only was this a huge let-down on a game I've literally waited years for, but I feel like I just got totally ripped off for $70, as there's no way it's worth even close to that. If I'd waited years for the price to come down to $15 or $20 I might not care as much, but I don't think I'd be any happier about having bought the game.
Man, so this is a tough one, but if I had to give this game a score I'd probably give it a 4 out of 10. I play a lot of games and this is definitely below average. Unlike a lot of people, I was actually excited that Ubisoft was handling this one, because I like a lot of the Assassin's Creed and Farcry games. But now I see those people were right to be skeptical.
I guess if anything this should be a lesson not to get my hopes up for a game like this and at least take the time to listen to the early access reviews before shelling out full price for it.
