I'm calling this thread 'Silly and or 'lazy' Star Wars custom figures, etc.' because lately I've just been occasionally doing that, making 'Silly and or 'lazy' Star Wars custom figures. Not really 'screen accurate', I could put more effort, etc. but it's fun to use what I have laying around to just make new figures, especially for Jabba's Palace or the Mos Eisley Cantina. I'll share some occasionally, but you all who do similar can too, just having fun here. Yesterday, I made this little guy for Jabba's Palace, we'll name him 'Khababa', because why not?

I love the concept of silly or lazy. I've been putting together a few jabba's henchmen, cantina patrons, and general spacers as Kenner-styled original vintage customs.

It's a great way to fill in some displays and dioramas with variety we'll never get in the official figure lines.

Time for another one... Tafmuk! Muftak's brother. Heck, this one isn't even a custom, it's more like a recommendation. Take a Thi-Sen, put a Rebel Fleet Trooper vest on him, a random belt, and then give him a drink and a big blaster rifle and just let him loose!

OK, time to get away from 'lazy' (and I got some more of those!) and into 'silly' but a bit more effort. This is the result of experimenting with RIT Synthetic DyeMore on what was a yellow Luke Yavin jacket and arms (using 30th Anniversary Luke), head and helmet from a C'ai Threnalli Rebel Pilot, hands from a Darth Vader, and painting/coating/painting, aggravation, repainting, finally finished to this, and I like it. The dye looks to be doing some bleed under the topcoat I did where there is silver, but I'm liking the worn look of it. His name is K'lunt (cloont), and you'll see him hanging out at all the proper space dives.

Ok, back to lazy, and wrong! A quick head swap to make this guy at Jabba's Palace, but since he's not correct, I'll name him Yixgot. He's still having a good time as you can see. The next one coming up is from the head swap, and slightly less lazy...20250215_204448.jpg

Here's Braconnor Bakiska! Who? You know, another drunk. Kind of surprised I didn't see him at Richard Pryor's Space Bar (or did I?). I'll get back to my previous silly-head-swap in a moment, this one I just finished, and he's fun. There's probably no way to really ever have everybody from Mos Eisley Cantina, but I'm prepping for when it shows up (we just got the basic model, due to $$$ and room). I had bought a head and head-wrap combo of resin molded parts from an ebay seller, and only yesterday did I sort out a body that I though would work great, as I just got a Anakin in peasant disguise figure that I was going to use for something different, but immediately I saw him as perfect for doing Braconnor. I was able to sort out layers of color and topcoat (Valejo paint and Liquitex Varnish) and then gave him the hands from a TVC 'The Emperor' Figure. I left his eyes white, because it gives him a tired/creepy look (that, and I was struggling with the tiny brush, why ruin it?). I doubt Hasbro would make this guy any time soon.

OK, back to the head-swap-and-slightly-less-lazy figure, Mosep Binneed as seen (sort of) hanging out at Jabba's Palace. Took his head from his original black series figure, and stuck it on a Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight figure (I think, maybe the one that came with the TRU Rancor, as I had another already). Can't remember where the fabric wrap came from, but I used water to let it fit down better on the body, and finished off with a drink and a staff weapon. Not screen accurate, but works!

This is a followup on K'lunt, the figure posted earlier in this thread that I used RIT Synthetic dye on the arms and jacket to make black... well as I've seen on other searches I've done, the dye tends to start to bleed, and even with a topcoat on the figure, the bleeding is happening underneath that.
I think it looks cool for this figure to get a worn greasy looking jacket, but it's not what I planned for, so if you want to try to dye plastic with the RIT Synthetic dye, just be warned. I'm going to try some brown dye soon, I've got three figures I'm going to see how much they change and hold up, and how much variance in shading I can control. Meanwhile, here's some photos of K'lunt at present.

Some of these maybe shared before, so here's Six Jabba Goons made with lots of head/hand/leg/other parts swapped, repainted, re-whatevered to make more variety. Boil-n-pop a lot! Valejo paint, some other acrylics, Mr. Super Clear, etc. Go make stuff!

Hello again, here are two 'not customs' (not yet anyway), more synthetic dye tests, a 'chocolate' color from RIT. The dye stays really well, no rub off on my fingers, these were dyed a week ago. Just areas were there was already paint but most of that rinses off. 'Luke' body will most likely get new head and hands.

You can see some areas where the dye took better than other areas, and it overall has a more red tone, but I like it.

Does the pliable soft rubber like plastic dye well? I want to dye a few hoods of vintage Ewoks

Well, the 30th Anniversary Luke Yavin jacket that I dyed RIT Dyemore "graphite" has some bleed as documented above, but the POTF2 Ponda jacket on the Luke farmboy figure I dyed "chocolate brown" so far seems to be holding well. I plan to dye another Yavin Luke figure to test again, and I also have a number of ewok hoods I can try out too. just keep in mind you'll only go from light to dark, and it's not very predictable the results, but it seems to work just to make something different. Make sure the RIT Dyemore "synthetic" dye is used, not regular dye, and test on stuff you don't mind if it goes wrong first! I'll try some hoods some time next week myself.

I want them dyed black.

Some feedback, as I dye action figures/parts, my wife dyes a Blythe doll scalp and similar rubbery material, she reports that rinsing in boiling water (carefully and not for long!) pulls out more color, but the scalp still looks good, probably surface and the hair etc... so... I plan to try to rinse my figures when I get back to them, without melting them, and see how much extra to get out, as you dont want the color to rub off over time on your figure(s).

Photo of the 'boil and rinse' residue... not tea!

Ok, feelin' really blue... my old Max Rebo was as faded as most you see out there, so I tried to dye him, but the blue I bought was too dark... but he now has Kenner Catalog photo vibes. His head, arms and legs took the dye (and had multiple boil rinses until the water turned clear) but his harder plastic body didn't. I ended up painting his upper body and belt with Valejo paints, using Liquitex Matte as a primer and topcoat. The dye process also made the head and limbs make a weird white residue, which I wiped away with a toothbrush. His 'diaper' color is the original blue of the plastic, the limbs/head were much more faded. Maybe I'll do another one someday, or not, I'm ok with him being more blue.

"Luke" had his head and hands dyed and rinsed, and the entire body rinsed as well, his neck painted blue. A work in progress.

Here's the Kenner Catalog photo of ol' Max.

Just doing an Obi-Wan dye job, going to use his body for another random alien. This is 'boil rinse #2'. The dye is heated in a Pyrex bowl in the microwave, body dunked for some time, move the joints around for coverage, renuke, repeat. Then the boiled water is poured over a few times. He needs one more dip to dye his shoulder joints, then ready to move on...

Here is "Mohrlesco", my take on a Lutrillian. This guy is fun, likes to party down at the cantina when not arms running for the rebellion. I gave him a fuller beard, because why not. Luke Yavin from 2007 body used, the yellow turned a nice blue with the dye, multiple rinses again, and the trim just turned out nice as-is on the jacket. Head sculpt from an ebay supplier. Someday I'll make a screen accurate Lutrillian, but I like Mohrlesco.

Here now, two Rodians that were allowed to go to a different tailor. Hmm, names... Setheena (green) and Narnjo (orange). I always liked Greedo as a kid, still have fond memories of opening that Star Wars carded figure while still outside, and immediately losing his blaster in the front lawn. I wanted some different looking Rodians, Setheena is just Vel Sartha now undercover, with some part swaps and repaint (and looks needs some fixes to the eyes, etc). Narnjo is using that Obi-Wan body I just dyed (blue shirt turned brown shirt, and all else that dyed), and had to dremel a bit into the wrist sockets for the hands. Both painted with Valejo acryilics and topcoat of Mr. Super Clear (Liquitex base under the colors). Narnjo's vest is from Teeka, need another one of those to make a moisture farmer.

It's fun making new figures. Sure, they are not very complicated ones, but I am enjoying the results. More folks for cantinas and just walking around Mos Eisley.

I made this Action Fleet custom a few years ago. Its supposed to be a Toscan Fighter, only seen in the PC game X-Wing Alliance. I didn't give it my all on this one. I had the spare parts laying around and just wanted to see how it would look.

This is a great thread! I like all this stuff even as unsilly stuff! 🙃

Everybody jump on in and share your own silly creations (and not silly too)!

I am time travelling now... I made my own BoShek back in the 90s, he's too tall, the wrong color, very fragile, and I dig this guy. No helmet, he left it on his ship. POTF2 Bossk body, and head, arms and boots from oh hell I can't remember... I bought a Kenner NASCAR race driver figure for the head anyway, maybe the rest too. Acrylic paints (art paint tubes) and done way back when I had better eyesight, and I've never had good eyesight. All the body parts cut with xacto and then crazy-glued on. I can't believe I still have him, I've moved a lot.

*I just searched, and found the NASCAR figure... Darrell Waltrip, Kenner's Starting Lineup Winner's Circle figure line from 1997. So this custom figure I made is now about 28 years old.

What are those single foot stands? & do they work better than other stands?
They are (single foot), they were from 'The Earth' Collectors Warehouse, and they don't seem to make them anymore. I like them, but some figures I have to chop down the peg to fit the feet, and use a tiny bit of putty on particular figures too, but I've liked using them. I haven't found a similar stand since I got these. I don't know about better, might be something out there that is?

Ba'ad Kus'toom.... yah he's that bad, that's his name, terrible! I'm wasting internet time and space now... meanwhile, I think Pax Bonkik looks better in a black vest, I took that from a previous Han Endor figure.

Avoid Ba'ad Kus'toom whenever possible....

My favorite part of Star Wars is the pilots. When I make pilot customs, I'm sure they can be seen as "lazy" even though they are usually just a head swap and the occassional customizing of a new helmet. I figured I'd throw some of my pilot customs in here. They are quick customs, but I'm very picky when selecting a head for a custom figure. Probably more time goes into looking for an accurate head than the actual customizing. In the end, I like how they came out and that's all that matters.

I have Reds 1-6, and thought it would be fun to make the rest of Red Squadron. When I did this project, I used the Rogue One Visual Guide and Wookieepedia for reference.

I have others I can post if there is any interest. I just didn't want to clog up the thread. 😅

I love Rebel Pilots, and my favorite figure (I can pick one?) is going to be 1978 Vintage Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot, followed by modern X-Wing/Snowspeeder versions of him (and the Retro Snowspeeder Luke!)... I have Rebel Pilots right in front of me here as I type, just not much room for more!

These Rebel Pilot customs you made are great, finding heads had to be a challenge.

Thanks! Including customs, I have about 100 pilots. I am up to date, so I'm just expanding the collection. Most of the heads I've used were from GI Joe. I went to YoJoe.com and was able to browse the figures by year, so it made it easier. I try to avoid using other actors (Marvel, DC etc) for my customs and stick to figures that aren't based off actors.

I've done other customs where I had to swap other parts, but I'm only posting ones where I just did a head swap only. I have a Rogue Squadron shelf, here are others I have:

Wedge Antilles - I swapped the ROTJ head with the one from the comic pack as it's the best likeness for him.

Honorary Rogue Leader Luke Skywalker - I based this figure off Luke's very brief X-wing appearance from ROTJ. He looked the same post-ROTJ as well.

Dash Rendar (Snowspeeder pilot). I did two others, one POTF2 style and a super-articulated of him in Snowspeeder gear, but I wanted to have this variant also. I believe it was from the N64 players guide.

Sarkli (Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike). I like to do a lot of video game customs. Sarkli was your wingman until defecting to the Empire. This photo was from a different game but it was the only reference photo I had.
