Browsing these boards, I saw a thread back in 2010 by ScorpioAttack who made some fantastic Rogue Squadron customs. I have been inspired to do my own. I am using his thread as a guideline, but now being in 2021 we have more action figures/options to choose from. I feel the 6 inch figures are easier to customize, as most of the joints are easily swappable. I always find part swapping in 3.75 inch scale to be a bit difficult. However, I am learning and seem to be getting better.

As a personal rule, any action figure heads I use must not be a Star Wars figure or based on a real life actor (based on comics is fine). The only exception I made was Starlord as Dash for my 6 inch custom because I was limited in my options. Anyway, let's get this started.

First up, Rogue Leader Wedge Antilles in civilian clothes

232643313_266725511557075_4706428946805101406_n.jpg 219781057_184844830298085_1405281292764513327_n.jpg

I had to dremel the head a bit deeper so it wasn't sitting too high. I feel like I could have drilled a tad deeper, but I was afraid of drilling right through as I was near the top. I had to use some tacky material to tighten up the head. The shirt was repainted a reddish-brown. At some point I would like to swap out the legs with black ones. For now I repainted over the red stripes on the pants. The shoulders on the jacket were repainted a matching brown.

Head: Wedge Antilles from the Wedge/Borsk Fey'lya comic pack (The Legacy Collection)
Everything else: Young Han Solo (The Vintage Collection)
Gun: Jon "Dutch" Vander Gold Leader (The Black Series)

Wedge Antilles (X-wing pilot)

It's just a head swap, but its probably the best likeness to Wedge we have (also staying with the comic theme anyway).

Tycho Celchu (civilian clothes)

Another head swap, but it works. I thought about swapping the legs out but honestly I'm fine with it.

Everything else: Endor Han (TVC)

I know, I know - another head swap lol. The neck socket was *just* big enough to fit on the figure. I added in the flames and black details on the helmet as best as I could.

Body: Wedge Antilles ROTJ (The Vintage Collection)

Derek "Hobbie" Klivian (civilian clothes)

239134271_1074828233048560_8123325745695930770_n.jpg

I finished Hobbie today and I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out. The head was a bit too small for the neck post, so I just heated them up in warm water and attached no problem. I thought it was a close enough match, especially with the helmets on. The hair is a light brown, not sure why it looks a bit reddish-orange. The arm sockets had to be widened just a bit with a dremel. After that it was just some part swapping, and the holster was the only painting done. The arms/vest are a bit lighter than what the pictures show. The last picture shows Hobbie's full outfit. Cassian's outfit matches pretty well - the pants may be a shade off, but the style and boots are spot on.

Head: GI Joe tan grunt head (according to the ebay listing)
Body: Cassian Andor (The Vintage Collection)
Arms: Bespin Han Solo (The Vintage Collection)
Vest: Bespin Han Solo (Han Solo/Boba Fett 5POA 2-pack)
Hands & Holster: Young Han Solo (The Vintage Collection)
Gun: Jon "Dutch" Vander Gold Leader (The Black Series)

Gavin Darklighter

106206-2-5ef275a95d8c3.jpg 106206-3-5ef275ae52dda.jpg

Yes another head swap lol but man is it a dead ringer to Gavin. I always thought Gavin had black hair. According to Wookieepedia, he is listed as having dark brown hair so I left it.

Head: GI Joe Major Barrage
Body: Jon "Dutch" Vander (The Black Series)
Helmet: Luke Skywalker (VOTC)

The problem with doing these type of customs is waiting for the parts to come in! Here's a few more customs, which are head swaps again. I am working on a few others which are more than head swaps, again it's just playing the waiting game right now.

Keir Santage

232539704_824705351518106_7060382202868889965_n.jpg

I really like this one. I posted this before, but if we're going by "Legends" material, Keir did fly in Rogue Squadron prior to Endor. I did boil and pop on the head, then dremeled out the neck post. From the looks of it, the helmet looks like Wedge's, or one very close to it so I gave him a spare that I had from Wedge. Keir's helmet looks a bit beat up, especially in the middle so I dry-brushed some black on it. I think it looks better, plus I didn't want it looking exactly like Wedge's either.

Head: GI Joe Footloose
Body: Jon "Dutch" Vander Gold Leader (The Black Series)
Helmet: Wedge Antilles ROTJ (The Vintage Collection)

Voort "Piggy" saBinring

234836310_1718151038384920_5948390557355155976_n.jpg 237227202_190209979768968_5592154096955474379_n.jpg

I wanted to throw this one in here for the heck of it. All I did was swap heads with a Jek Porkins figure and a Gamorrean Guard. I trimmed down the neck peg a bit. The helmet was also from Jek Porkins. I let it sit in hot water, placed it on the Gamorrean head and ran it under cold water to set it. I repainted it and drilled holes for the horns.

Head: Gamorrean Guard (POTF2)
Body & Helmet: Jek Porkins (POTJ)

Here are some sneak peaks as to what I'm working on.

Wes Janson and Nrin Vakil

Going through my pilots and here are a few more customs I did a while back.

Honorary Rogue Leader Luke Skywalker

235756593_357178349283695_3642408508742476264_n.jpg 239093052_2903351619925035_9074815999374485170_n.jpg

After doing a Shadows of the Empire Luke custom, I had this head left over so I made this. This was based on Luke's (very brief) X-wing appearance in ROTJ, but also could be used from the comics. He has pretty much the same hairstyle. I drybrushed some black on the helmet to give it a used look. The lightsaber peg doesn't fit in the hole so I loop it under the hose.

Head & Lightsaber: Luke Skywalker Endor Capture (The Vintage Collection)
Body: Luke Skywalker X-wing pilot (The Legacy Collection)
Helmet: Luke Skywalker Dagobah Landing (The Vintage Collection)

Will Scotian

234214618_1834707650043300_1009520911947454062_n.jpg 233709566_298936582030606_3104171703464332831_n.jpg

This is my version of Will Scotian. Will first appeared in Shadows of the Empire as Rogue Two and was retconned in The Empire Strikes Back. In new continuity he is still the same pilot. Under the "Legends" section on Wookieepedia, his equipment is listed as having a flight suit, blaster and comlink. I don't have a comlink accessory but provided him with a blaster. The head was from the website Marauder Gun Runners. I had to widen the neck socket a bit with my dremel. I painted over the black arrows that were in front of the rebel logos on the helmet.

Head: "Vanguard" Light Skin Tone with Brown Hair (Marauder Gun Runners website)
Body: Dak Ralter (The Black Series)
Gun: Jon "Dutch" Vander (The Black Series)
Helmet: Plourr Illo

Piggy!! Gosh that recipe is a classic, I remember when he was one a standard custom job, along with a Bossk-based Bo Shek and Lando/Ceremonial Luke-based cutscene Biggs.

You're doing a fantastic job, love seeing these!

I'm still waiting for some parts to come in, so I figured I'd touch up a few customs while I wait.

I swapped out the holster on Wedge as I didn't like the color. The new holster is from Smuggler Lando (30th Anniversary). I also repainted the strap on the leg to match. I took a picture of the two Wedge customs as I forgot to do that before. I didn't realize the height difference but honestly that doesn't bother me.

Started painting my Wes Janson figure. So far, so good. I think the colors match the reference picture very well. I got lucky as the paint does not rub when moving the joints. I took apart the legs and want to see if I can just swap the lower legs with the other figure I need. If it doesn't look right then I'll just swap out the legs entirely.

Looking good! I'm assuming you're looking for lower legs with some boots? Or at least not the long pants look of that Indy figure? I have been doing a lot of foot/boot type swaps lately and have gone with a cut and glue method rather than swapping lower legs, it works out pretty well sometimes.

Thanks! Yeah I'm going to try an IJ Russian Soldier figure. That should be in Wednesday. I also found a Nrin Vakil figure in a small lot which I grabbed. That should be in towards the end of the week.

Originally, I was just going to be posting some Rogue Squadron customs out of their pilot uniforms, but it looks like its going to be a bit before all the parts come in. I figure I'll throw some other Rogue customs in the meantime. The good thing about head swaps are they are easy to do but the downside is there's not much else, besides maybe designing the helmet.

Derek "Hobbie" Klivian (Snowspeeder pilot)

237286620_552351699421180_1291965057247193035_n.jpg234355266_834981817221021_6272562157758613589_n.jpg

I wanted to make a proper Snowspeeder pilot Hobbie, as the official figure of Hobbie that was released had him wearing the cap that the Snowspeeder pilots wore. The boil and pop method used on this figure, then dremeled out the neck until it was able to fit securely on the neck post. I took a photo of all 3 Hobbie figures I have now.

This one was made with the leftover torso from the IJ figure I had. The arm and leg holes had to be widened a bit. The head had to be widened as well, while drilling a hole into each forearm so I could connect the arms. I was lucky to get away with using arms and legs from a B-wing pilot, so no need to file down the joints there. I painted the shirt red, the vest a dark brown and tried to color match the head and hands as best as I could. I repainted the boots black and drybrushed some gray on it so they look worn. I tried to close the vest with some superglue but it couldn't make it around the torso. After putting the figure together, I realized Nrin has brown pants and no boots. Not sure if I will redo it, I kind of like the all red look. I also found a Nrin figure in a fodder lot so I might just swap out the hands and head when it comes in. Lastly I cut the butt off the gun so he can hold it better, I think it's a pretty close match.

Head/ lower arms/hands: Squid Head (Vintage 1983)
Torso/pelvis: Indiana Jones (Crystal Skull Rocket Launcher)
Upper arms/legs: Keyan Farlander B-wing pilot (Rebel Pilot Legacy set)
Vest: GI Joe (unsure of exact figure, it was in my parts bin)
Gun: Boba Fett (Han Solo/Boba Fett 5POA 2-pack)

Thanks! I'm going to swap the head and hands out with the other Nrin figure when it comes in. I just don't like how large the hands are.

Here's 2 customs I did for the heck of it. Dash is one of my favorite characters so I wanted to have a few different versions of him.

Dash Rendar (Snowspeeder pilot version 1)

108145-3-5fc0747dd3264.jpg
237813887_919499791970947_5626144280509424973_n.jpg 240533854_1045234616303327_6501468265094122037_n.jpg

I based this figure off a trading card. I boiled and popped the head out, then dremeled out the neck socket. Lastly I dry-brushed some black on the helmet to give it a used/worn look.

Head: Dash Rendar (POTF2)
Body: Wedge Antilles Snowspeeder pilot (The Black Series)
Helmet: Luke Skywalker (VOTC)

Dash Rendar (Snowspeeder pilot version 2)

I believe this image was in the Shadows of the Empire players guide. I just dremeled a bit on the chest to fit the chestbox in, and put some tacky material inside where I dremeled so the chestbox would stay in place. Nothing fancy, but I thought it would be a cool figure variation of Dash.

Figure: Dash Rendar (POTF2)
Blaster: Han Solo (POTF2)
Helmet: Unsure, but I remember getting it off ebay. Decals are applied.

I really like how this one came out. I borrowed the recipe from ScorpioAttack when he did his. The only downside is the right foot snapped off really easily, I wasn't even trying to move it. I superglued it back on as it was a clean break. Not sure if I'll get another figure and redo the legs. The peg on the right leg almost tore off when removing that leg, but I was able to get some superglue in there to secure the peg. I think that should be fine.

Anyway, this was made with all IJ parts, minus the head. I think the head is a very close likeness, he's got that smirk like in the reference picture. I was able to heat the head up and attach, so no modifying the neck socket as it was originally too small. The hair is a bit longer than I'd like, but no biggie. The leg holes had to be widened a bit, after that it was just some part swapping and painting.

Head: GI Joe Blowtorch
Arms/Torso/Pelvis/Vest: Indiana Jones (Indy Crystal Skull - 2 different versions)
Legs: IJ Russian Soldier (Crystal Skull)
Holster/Gun: Lando in Smuggler Outfit (30th Anniversary)
Helmet: Wes Janson

I updated my Nrin Vakil figure the other day. I swapped out the vintage parts with parts from a spare Nrin Vakil figure that I got in a parts lot. I just thought the vintage arms were too big. I was also able to get these arms to fit more securely. Besides that, its the same parts as before.

Here's a fun picture I took. Wedge putting up with Tycho, Hobbie and Wes.

This one was really just a head swap and some painting. I boiled and popped the figure to take it apart and prep for painting. After painting was done, I reassembled the figure, but left the skirt part out. Without it, there is a small gap at the waist. Instead, I added in a holster to hide the gap. Lastly I attached the head, which fit with no modification. The head was a tad loose, so I put some tacky material inside. The head still "pops" when you put it on, I put just enough to tighten it up.

Sarkli

I like to do a lot of customs from video games. This is Sarkli, from Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike for the Nintendo GameCube. He is your wingman until defecting to the Empire. I dropped the head and figure in some hot water and attached, as the neck opening was a bit too small. Decals were applied to the helmet.

Head: GI Joe? This was in a lot I got off ebay. It looks like a GI Joe Duke figure but all Duke figures I came across had blonde hair.
Body: Jon "Dutch" Vander Gold Leader (The Black Series)
Helmet: Zev Senesca (Saga Legends)

Dar Keyis

This was the first time I tried doing facial hair (in this case, stubble) on a figure. I took some sandpaper and just very lightly sanded the cheeks and chin area. After, I filled it in with a dark gray (Dawnstone), wiped a bit off at a time, repeat. The neck opening was too small so again I dropped them in hot water and attached. I had to drill a bit deeper inside the head with a dremel as the head was sitting a bit too high. Still trying to find a color that matches the helmet so I can paint over the red stripe.

Head: GI Joe or Elite Corps? It was in a head lot from ebay
Body: Jon "Dutch" Vander (The Black Series)
Helmet: Lt. Lepira

Sweet! You gonna do a Sarkli using one of those black scout troopers (think there's a pair from a comic pack???)? Also thought maybe a Captain Antilles jacket might do for a Dar Keyis like the ref pic.

Thanks! I honestly have no interest in doing those. Dar appeared briefly in the comics and that image of Sarkli wasn't even from RS3, that may have been from another game. Also those figures you mentioned, I looked on ebay and assuming I'm looking at the right versions, go for quite a bit
