R2-S4M ROTJ40TH BaD Factory

Kinda perplexing that the 25th of May has come and go and there's still no sign of R2-S4M. I would have bet money that the actual ROTJ 40th anniversary date was what Disney was waiting for. It did pop up on the Asia/Australia/NZ ShopDisney site just a few hours before the 25th, but no sign of it on the US or UK sites. Could it be that the stock has been held up somewhere and there's a container waiting to arrive or be unloaded?

Here's the ShopDisneyAsia link for those who may wish to order from there ... https://www.shopdisney.asia/nz/r2-s....html?isProductSearch=1&plpPosition=undefined

Like I pointed out in a different thead (or maybe earlier in this one)...just like the Japanese site, the Asia/AU site is not carrying the pride droids, but the US and UK sites are. I really do think they're just holding off a bit, so that they don't have so many Droid Factory options available at once. While S4M could pop up at anytime, I wouldn't be surprised if they're waiting for the pride promo window to close, which would be the end of June.

S4M will show up eventually, so don't succumb to FOMO-fever like these poor souls did:

To Obi Wan you must listen!

Frankly speaking this isn't a Droid I'd even consider paying double or more for, it's just not that much of a necessity for me as others could be. Such as R3-T2 was, or if they were to redo R2-A5. As well doing a ones that haven't been made yet. Not that I want to or even like to, but some are certainly a must have over others in terms of paying more than MSRP/retail.

I wouldn't pay double either, but it's definitely a must-have for me. I refuse to own the one from the EE pack, so S4M is literally a godsend. In fact, that's the figure that might make me finally open my Barge and check for any damage it may have sustained while being knifed by madmen.

i'd pay double, but i wouldn't pay current ebay fees. that's why i'm saying we should do a group order. we can probably get them for merely double if we get 5 or 6 of us buying together.

Have you done the conversion from yen to US currency? It’s about $21 a figure, not counting shipping. I’m good on waiting a while longer.

Hmm... I wonder if I might be able to score this in the park. We are doing a massive cross-country trip with two days at Disneyland in July.

With that pic & the previous promos, you'd think the photographer & displayer had never seen an Astromech before.
Well I can't recall going into a restaurant or a bar, and the server carrying the food and drinks behind them LoL 🤪
Still great news on the date.

Picked mine up at the Star Wars Trading Post in the Anaheim Downtown Disney yesterday, so you don't need to go into the parks to find him...

Good news for those who live near the park. I just hope they adhere to the June 12th launch date, and don’t post it early, unannounced. They did that once before (though I don’t recall which droid or set it was) and it ended up selling out before I even woke up that day.

Is there something wrong with the one from the EE set, or is it that the set is long sold out and going for a lot on the secondary market?

Yes, there is something very wrong with it: it’s that godawful Bartoo mold (VC25)!! lol

Most astromech collectors, such as myself, despise that figure and thus every subsequent repaint of it.

In fact, that mold is so despised, that EE eventually dumped all their unsold stock of that 6-pack on Amazon, and even at sub-$25 prices, Amazon took over two years to eventually sell out.

Even if a person was indifferent about the Bartoo mold, the fact remains that this new Disney version has a more accurate paint job. Hasbro had to guess at what S4M looked like from the front, since at the time they produced it, no known images of the actual droid were available. This new version is based on the BTS pics that surfaced a year or two ago.

I never even bought that droid pack with that awful mold. I don't own a single astromech that uses it, either. This S4M droid does give me hope that Disney would be willing to make R2-A6 again with a much better paint job. That one would make me even happier than S4M.

A6 is the white R2 w/ green panels, right? The one from the Royal Starship 4-pack? Or were you referring to the even older one from those very first EE astromech sets?

The EE one, which utilized the G9 mold, could have used some tighter paint apps, I suppose. Is that what you’re referring to?

Sorry, yes, I meant R2-A5. The weathering is very nicely done on S4M and if they can pull that off and get the faint green borders on the dome right and update the body panels to be correct (EE version is missing some green), I'd scoop that right up.

If I had read your original post after I had my morning coffee, I probably could have extrapolated the one you actually meant. 😅

But yes, I'd also love to see a proper release of A5, whether from Disney or Hasbro. Just as long as it was using the B.A.D. mold.

They did a really good job with the weathering on this, considering it's all done by hand. Hasbro hasn't been that good with astromech weathering since R4-G9 and R4-P17. Will be interesting to see how the weathering varies from sample to sample. The 12th can't get here soon enough!

Now anyone can tend bar!

Anyone with a hole in the top of their dome. 😁

There are also drink refill Astromechs that work the full service fizz drink stations. They unfortunately lose their mobility & have to be attached to the station...

They also require excessive maintenance & cleaning due to all of the fizz drink spill & overflow on their domes.
Much like a 7-11 Big Gulp station.

😁

I'm seeing something weird on both your S4M domes. It looks like this particular panel area is not inset like the others. Is it a trick of the light? I highlighted in blue where the separate edges for that seemingly missing panel should be.
