I am 100% purchasing a couple of these. One for opening and one to keep carded.
It would be nice if we could get a desert worn version too.

Yeah, but that's it. The first R2 and the ANH 40th anniversary R2 came with a bunch of stuff.

I personally have never had a problem with the scale of R2.

Will these be getting a regular release in black & red boxes later in the year like the Death Star Trooper, Jawa and Tusken Raider did back in 2017?

Was this figure an official release by Kenner back in 1980?
I think I only ever had the first R2 figure back then.
I can definitely pass on this one. I currently own 2x ANH 40th BS6, 1x Koto ArtFX dirty R2 (came with my favorite Yoda figure) and also the SH Figuarts version of R2, which is really quite perfect.

Well, there was an R2-D2 with "sensor scope" in the ESB line of vintage figures, but he wasn't all dirtied up...so he was an official release by Kenner...from a certain point of view ;-) But no, there was no R2-D2 (Dagobah) with this particular card back.

Off-topic, but has someone made that Ackbar/Revenge of the Jedi sticker into a t-shirt? It would be a niche product, but I feel like it would sell.

There is a 4-Lom (Zuckuss) version too.
I really do like the cardback art for this one but with no accessories this time around, maybe they should have used the original sensorscope cardback that reminds people "now with sensorscope!" Guess we can expect R2 with pop-up lightsaber in a few years right?
The release I got (ANH 40th) came with Luke's lightsaber hilt, and I think the old orange box figure did too!
If you’ve already got one of the previous R2 release you can just interchange the accessories between the new dirty version and the old one.
I love how it isn't "Now with sensorscope!" but "Now!! With sensorscope."

Can someone confirm if this the same Artoo from the Droid 3 pack or is it at all different?
The R2 from the droid 3 pack has more of a scorched effect like how he looks after the battle of Yavin in ANH. This 40th Anniversary version is more muddy like how he looks on Dagobah in ESB.
Doesn't seem like there's much love for this little guy. I found one the other night at Target. I'm still a little disappointed at the lack of accessories with him. I mean, sure, it doesn't make sense for him to come with the Sail Barge drink carrier...but they could have thrown something in with him. A couple of Luke's supply boxes, or the lamp, or something. Still, I only have one R2 in my collection...so I got him. Deco is nice, but I think they should have given him more "muck". It's also mostly just on the front, and very sparsely done on the sides and back.

I picked him up. Mainly because I didn't already have an R2-D2. If I had already had a clean R2-D2, I probably would have passed on this dirty one. I guess if I do break down and buy the Degobah Luke/Yoda 2-pack then I'll appreciate this R2-D2 a lot more.
I actually like him a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn’t planning on picking him up, but then I found him in the store. I can’t wait to put him with the upcoming Dagobah Luke/Yoda 2 pack.

Wish he was more dirty and came with Luke's camping lamp.
i got this (and at-at driver) as an impulse buy. For R2, like the new card art. didn't really need another r2. I guess this dagabah art was used to promote/pair w/ luke/yoda 2 pk more so than reusing the 1982 hoth sensorscope art that 2004 tvc used.
Mine arrived last week, I’ll be buying another one when I get paid to open. I really like him, my only complaint is that he’s not muddy enough.
Any customizers try and remove the dirt yet? I assume it won’t all come off, but was curious if some light rubbing alcohol at least cleans it up a bit.
I have one preordered to keep carded. The cardback is amazing! And I'll be very tempted to get another to display with Luke & Yoda. I agree the mud is lacking, and is the main thing causing me to at least pause on a 2nd purchase. I have a 3.75" R2 that's really muddy and wish this was more in step with that. Can't remember which line he came in. There's been a few attempts at that over the years I think. The Dagobah version and damaged ANH maybe running together in my head.
The deco kinda says "ho boy, that was more than a fart"

NO, this one won't get re-release in a regular box, he is been release numerous times from the start of the line in different packages, from regular black box, to a 3 pack exclusive to Amazon, to the Star Wars anniversary line, to the ESB anniversary line.
He's not in any of the assortments of boxed versions of the 40th figures that are listed on Yakface.

Not really. I mean, it's the same base figure, just with different deco.
