Ponda Baba Mini Bust - 2019 PGM Gift

A face structural design, which differs from the original look of the character. I'm not sure how to feel about it because I'm really not seeing Ponda Baba's face there. Also, the Tarkin-pointing-the-finger pose given to the mini bust ...hmm. I doubt there will be a removable limb if using that pose, as he would look quite funny missing the arm with the blaster while pointing with his index finger with the other, as in: "Hey! You cut off my arm" 
... unless the arms we are seeing can be detached, and there's a second pair of arms to change the pose? He also appears to be a bit on the heavy side and the head's too small. I think there's room for improvement, but what do I know, right? I selected him as my gift, nonetheless, as I want the character in my collection.

Are the gifts having a theme now, this year's being pointy fingers.
I really wanted this as my gift but I my initial reaction was WTF, i don't like personally but don't like pointy finger clenched fist Tarkin either.

Haha! Yeah. It's a finger fetish. Just wait until they start using the middle one! LOL. Hopefully they will rework the sculpt. He needs to be a little more slender, his beard shouldn't flare out so much, the top of his head should not be so high up, also the overall size of the head needs to be a little bigger, and that pointy finger should be changed for a different arm pose. But if it is at all like "Pointy Tarkin", Walrus Man will stay the same. LOL

In one respect I like that they are going with different poses and not just the hands behind the back pose but this feels like they are trying to hard. Tarkin should be as your mock up, pointy finger and other behind the back, the fist just spoils what would be a great bust.
I agree. I also like a variety of poses to break away from the monotony of certain ones that have been used often. But I want poses that would make a little more sense and be a little more representative of the character. They don't always have to be too action-like and be nice if he would resemble the character more. Tarkin is not represented right with that clenched fist, but as I've read the clenched fist is a done deal. Ponda Baba was never pointing a finger at anyone in the Cantina, so. Maybe the clenched fist could look better on the Walrus.
* I'll mock up Ponda Baba a little as far as measurements, the way I see it. I'll leave it with the straight brow line which is a bit weird, and to me, I'm not really seeing the character but just any Aqualish-type. I won't change the pointy finger either. We tried with Tarkin and no one listened.

Overall it's fine but there goes the flipper hands option. I don't know why GG (new & old) have to have both arms doing something. I guess they want to put as much as possible into each sculpt but that ignores the "less is more" end result. If anything it gives them dual personalities and a silly look like the first Emperor and the new Tarkin. This Walrusman looks menacing enough and in character so it will look great on display.

The straight brow line needs to be changed. The bony cups surrounding the eyes area should be somewhat arched on their upper side. The way it is right now looks too much like scuba diving goggles. The size of the head also changes the whole perspective, so it should be bigger. Just like Ben pointed out, the statue is a great example of how Walrus Man should look.

I just wonder how that happens. Was the concept artist working from memory without any reference photos? It almost looks like he's wearing Commander Cody's visor.

Could have been his/her own interpretation of the character from memory. Usually when you are creating something of this sort, and for anything else for that matter, if you want to come up with an accurate design, one should familiarize with the original design of the object and or look of a person/animal and have as much reference around as possible. I'm almost certain they'll rework his look, and this was pretty much something to let the customer know "hey look, we are working on it" They've said more artwork will show up in the days ahead, thus we'll see if any changes are applied.

This is honestly disappointing.
There's a continuity error in ANH...Baba has fin hands when attached but when Ben slices his arm off and we see the close up of the severed arm, it's a furry five digit hand. That's why they included two sets of hands for the statue.I’m confused. Pretty disappointed in the pose (same with Tarkin). I own the Cantina statue of Ponda which is far superior to this (also, why no more Cantina statues?) Honestly, GG are going in a direction that I'm not a fan of.
so, all in all. Underwhelmed with Ponda and Tarkin minibusts and the 1/7 scale of the Poncho Trooper. Wish there was an option where I didn't have to choose any of these items and just get my money back! Sadly, I'll have to do something that I've never done in all my years of collecting. Picking the most sellable item so I can sell it to get some of my money back on my platinum membership.
The only consolation is that this is my last PGM.

Huh.. never realized that. All these years later and I'm still learning something new...I prefer the weird mitts, the fingers look dumb and that's how I've always remembered him.

Here is the order of events, undeniable, backed up by screenshots:
- Walrus Guy has Flipper Hands
- Freaky Nose has normal human hands
- Walrus Guy is wearing and orange flight jacket
- Freaky Nose is wearing a long sleeve tan shirt and brown vest

First, it IS Freaky Nose that is raising up the blaster. Walrus guy is behind him and it may look like it is Walrus guy but in the Bluray it is very clear. There is also the evidence that the arm that is raising up has (1) a human hand and (2) a long sleeve tan shirt. Second, even if you explained that Obi Wan "missed"and accidentally chopped off Walrus Guy's arm, there are a few problems. (1) Walrus Guy had flipper hands and the severed arm doesn't and (2) Walrus guy wasn't holding a blaster and the severed arm was. Also, as Freaky nose is falling backward, it is clear he still has both arms.

If they do this one up with a removable arm and a magnet to attach the arm that works for me. Have a lightsaber cauterized stump and I'll pose this next to kenobi. They just need to make sure they stick to their roots and base the sculpt on a 3d scan instead of a sketch.
It's a work in progress. I say let's just give them some time and see if they improve his look. Not so for Tarkin as that one is set in stone, but that's another story. Walrus Man was the gift I selected, thus I'm hoping for something better than the sketch.
Looking much better now with the digital sculpt. I knew the right arm was going to be removable. Now, they need to change the other arm to a different pose. It looks kind of stupid with an arm chopped up while pointing his finger with the other : "Hey! Were you the one that cut off my other arm?" - Ponda Baba calmly pointed out. LOL

I really think that if they are going to give us a removable right arm, the left one should also be removable and offered with a different pose. Maybe reaching over his chest, in that direction, to touch the one that has just been chopped up. If that does not happen, well, I guess the best way to display him would have to be using the arm with the blaster.

True story, I was in college at the time of the Special Editions and went to Taco Bell so much for the toys I got a stalker LOL. A young lady who worked there and I guess took a shining to my Gordita. Were those toys worth a creepy yet semi hot stalker? Totally.

Glad to see the removable arm, but I absolutely hate the way he's leaning forward and pointing.
Those commercials for the movie were so awesome!! My favorite one of all time though was the "Drop the Chalupa!" one LMAO.Haha! 'member that? horrible movie, but the commercials with the chihuahua were funny.
