Playmates Star Trek

I'm hoping Spock and Kirk look just a little better in person; they look good, but the rank insignia's are just a little big (to my eye), and spock has something a little off in the face.
Excited to see what they do though, 4.5-5" has always been a favorite size of action figure for me. And I'm definitely in for what they do for TOS Movie figures.

Spotted most of the new Star Trek stuff at my local Target yesterday. Most everything was there I think save for a figure or 2.

Saw these in person at Target last night. They look ok, the face sculpts look better in person, albeit still a little off. The original style cards are fantastic. Those hip joints kill me though.

For nostalgia reasons it's nice to see them back on pegs. The figure themselves are lackluster for me as the likeness just isn't there, and that's what I'd expect in a line made in 2022. I'm not into collecting retro or figures that look like the were made in the mid 90's, I already have them all in that format. That said I guess you can't really expect much for $13 when a small 3.75" SW puts these to shame and are only two Dollars more.

I really wish I could like the aesthetics more so that it would warrant me upgrading from the old 90's figures.

I think that's just it, they don't look right for the time. They're not quite a retro/reboot/rerelease kind of thing and not quite up to 2022 figure standards. Puts them in a weird grey area quality wise.

I stood there for a while really trying to like that Spock...

I really liked the sculpt detail on art asylum figures but the scale was outside my collecting focus.
The art asylum is easily the best. Love those. But i really dig these new playmates too. I appreciate what they’re going for. More realistic than the 90’s line, yet not going for ultra realistic black series style, yet still toyetic.

Picked up Admiral Kirk and Captain Spock. It always baffled me that, as extensive as the original Playmates toy line was, they did so little with the original crew movies. Of the two, Spock is the better figure. the likeness is better and the removable radiation gloves are a nice touch. The Kirk figure is okay, albeit a bit disappointing--the portrait is very soft and the face paint is minimal. The original line may have had exaggerated body proportions, but you couldn't deny that the faces were almost always fantastically well done.

IDK, I think they covered the movies decently. It was getting ahold of them all that was an issue for me, some were Exclusives of stores that didn't exist in my area not to mention in general they didn't even filter the main releases out this far sin some places. And back then we didn't have internet and ebay. I can't completely remember if the whole crew got Movie style Uniforms or not, but they did cover Kruge, khan and General Chang. The Motion Picture was well covered and don't think they left anyone out. STIV might have been the one exception since no real bad guy to focus on and everyone was in civilian clothes which make reuse difficult.

Try as I might I do not have a complete crew in the movie Uniforms post TMP.

I believe the original line was Mainly for The Next Generation. And then at some point they started expanding to both DS9 and the Original Series. TOS had the box set of the whole crew. But I don't think they all got the red movie uniforms. Some had Motion Picture uniforms and some had the red ones. I do have a bunch of these figures in boxes in the closet though. One of these days I will pull them all out and see what I have.

Saavik got a red monster maroon articulated release. Captain Kirk, Scotty and Chekov got red monster maroons with only 5 pts of articulation in the Generations line of packaging. There was never a Captain Spock or Admiral Kirk in red uniforms release in Playmates until now. TMP pretty much covered everyone except Scotty.

I only recently got a few boxes from storage and was trying to sort through them to either sell off, donate and display just a few. Little did I realize that was more of a daunting task than I had though it would be and only made it so far, I did discover that I somehow acquired doubles of a couple. lol
I'm only halfway through and yeah the bulk was TNG related, I do have complete crew for both DS9 and Voyager but I haven't come a cross a complete set of red movie uniforms only Kirk, Saavik and Scotty so far.

I got heavy into those Star Trek figures because they was no Star Wars toys at the time!!! ;) Those Bend-Em things were just terrible!!!

But yeah, it seems everything was TNG, until that original series Box Set. And then they started expanding to DS9 (and eventually Voyager) and some more TOS stuff. I know I have like Harry Mudd, Edith Keeler, Orion Slave Girl, and then of course the movie ones. Once they changed the scale with First Contact I was out!!! Luckily Hasbro was doing SW again by that point.

There is no complete set of the cast in the monster maroons. Playmates only did Kirk, Scotty and Chekov as part of the Generations movie figures and a Saavik figure in an extra line. That's it.

^ Crap, seriously? I thought they had at least finished the movie crew off at some point, I didn't keep track because no internet in the 90's, despite what Al Gore says, and I lived in a very remote area. So the only time I know about something was if it was at the store when I went there., thus I had pretty much moved on from this line by the time DS9 was over.

There is a lot going on in that picture!
Yeah, at first I thought it was from the mid nineties until i saw parks & rec figure! lol

Nice. A good move for anyone who had their eye on it. I doubt you would be able to get it for any less.

Thx. I intend on picking up the Bird of Prey sometime later next year as well.

While I do like the BoP design I didn't care for the Playmobile version. I'd rather just have a Playmates version similar to the Enterprise.

The figure interaction is more my speed vs the model look, so in that respect the Playmobil versions work for me. Great that there are numerous options out there.

Yeah and that is the plus side of Playmobile, smaller scale, could you imagine how much space it would take up if these were 4" scale?!

I'd need to not let my wife look in our financial accounts for a little bit. And take her side of the bed 🤪

I was actually thinking it's been a long time and no word on a wave 2, but in actuality the news was only posted towards the end of January and it's only the end of February. lol
Still I would like to know if this line is doing well enough that we can expect a Wave 2 and that it doesn't contain figures people really want and is short lived like Trek 09 final wave... At least there aren't needed bridge parts included to miss out one though.

I am a bit worried as these figures do not seem to be moving that fast, was it a mistake to go 5" versus 4" or 6" I wonder?

I feel like it was. Right now they sit on an island.

I see them. I sort of like them. I ultimately have passed.

I'm also confused as to why Prodigy has no action figures so long after its debut. Yeah, it's a "kids show," but if you've watched it, it's probably the most Trek show of any of the new series. The crew making it aren't speaking down to kids.

Get those kids into figures stat!

UPDATE: I just did a quick search and voila. Hologram Janeway and the Prodigy crew. This must be Wave 2.

That Q Might be interesting, never was able to get his original figure for obvious reasons. The others do not appeal to me, already have the Worf and Geordi I want. Seven just isn't my cup of tea and have zero interest in 09 Trek figures.

What I would like is a Captain Shran from Enterprise because I'm a big Andorian fan!

Yeah, unfortunately for the rest of Trek.. I went in thinking it's gonna be some kiddie show, and while it is to a point being on Nickelodeon. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was done to walk that fine line between appealing to kids and adults. And the biggest thing was it stayed true to the Trek core ideals without being preachy.

I wouldn't get that Janeway if it were free, mainly because I already have her. I would buy the two main kids as they are neat looking and add to the Alien pool.

Update 2: There is apparently another wave. I hate linking YouTube videos but here you go:

Looks like Worf, LaForge, 7 of 9 silver catsuit, Spock Strange new worlds, Pike SNW, Q judges robes, and looks like these two reviewers missed a figure at the end in packaging and loose looks like it could be Capt Terrel from Wrath or Admiral Cartwright from Voyage/ Undiscovered. Exciting if this is the next wave.
