Indiana Jones Adventure Series

Second one done tonight. Just needed to paint the handkerchief as I’d finished the rest a couple days ago. I thought this would be an easy one to do but then realized getting the suit color was really hard. I think I got pretty close. And don’t ask what combination of paints I used, because I don’t remember, lol! I can tell you what colors I mixed but not in the amounts. It was purely trial and error.

Final one for tonight. I don’t normally say this, but this one I’m pretty proud of. I was going to put this one off to the end of my current backlog of customs because I was like it has so much fine detail I don’t even know how I’m going to do it. But then while working on another custom I had an epiphany as to how to make the fez from kazim work with the sallah with turban figure head and I was like let’s do it! The tie was a nightmare and while it’s not 100% screen accurate, this is as close as it’s going to get. The lines on the shirt and the cummerbund thing were no picnic either!

First custom done tonight. I was waiting on some much needed paint which finally arrived today. Everything was done a few days ago, just needed to paint his collar tonight.
So is that Kazim's suit with Prof. Indy's bow tie for tuxedo Donovan? And Prof Indy's suit with Kazim's tie for suit Donovan?

I can just hear this conversation going on 35 years ago:
Costume Dept - "So, here what we've designed for each character. What do you think?"
Producer - "You need to make all the outfits look similar to what another character is wearing. I just heard from the toy company that they're only going to make half the characters as figures, then let the fans use those figures to make the other half."

lol! That was very thoughtful of them to think of us down the road back then!!

Correct on tuxedo Donovan: kazim’s body, professor indy tie and of course Donovan’s head.

Blue suit Donovan is a Marcus Brody body with Donovan’s head. I think I initially thought it would just be a simple head swap as I saw one picture of Walter in the castle where his suit looked dark blue. But then the more I researched it I was like oh, it’s kind of a bluish grey. I think the overall shape and contour of the Brody suit worked better too.

DarkKnight's flurry of customs inspired me to get my latest 'Wave 5' wrapped up. I originally thought this would be a whole wave of the ladies, but realized that would take way too long, so I fast-tracked a few others I'd been working on instead.

First up from Temple of Doom is a Thuggee Slaver and Willie Scott.

The Thuggee Slaver is mostly a Hypno Indy body with Helena legs. I also used a Helena head, but I didn't want to wrap another turban, so I smashed some sculpey over the head in the shape of the turban and did a more simplistic cloth wrap around that, then cast the whole thing in resin so I could reuse it. It could probably be better, but works until I get something else. The belting, wraps, scarf and weapons are all scratch built. I left him without a sword since often these guys weren't carrying one in their sheathes in the film.

Willie is another Helena figure where I carved down the sleeves to turn them into bare arms. I made a fabric 'vest' and 'sleeves' for the lower legs. I didn't quite size her top right so its a little short, but good for now. The head is from Syndicate Customs. I'm considering her 'done' for now as the 'bridge' version, but since the headsculpt features earlier elements she had removed by then (jewelry/scarf), I'll probably add a skirt and longer veil eventually for the fuller 'sacrifice' outfit. The belting comes apart with a snap in the back to it could be re-placed over a skirt, should I make one.

Closing out Wave 5 is Indiana Jones in the German disguise from Berlin in Last Crusade and Irina Spalko from Crystal Skull.

Berlin Indy began as me trying to figure out what to do with a spare Donovan body (the legs don't come apart from the torso with boil & pop, so my original plans for it got nixed). Like other uniformed Germans, I sourced military 1/12 parts from Monkey Depot. Had to carve down the arms and Indy's head quite a bit to get things to fit. He's still missing the collar insignia and one pocket medal which I hope to source in the future. I really can't tell what color the pants are in the film so I left them grey for now (it might just be Indy's normal pants and not part of a German uniform).

Irina Spalko is the familiar recipe Wes and others have done using the Black Series Tala body, which is just a little too short. I carved off the Imperial Uniform details on the chest and added pockets and other detailing using thin pieces of vinyl. Reused the Tala holster too, so it is a bit oversized. The rest of the sword belt/sheath is scratch built and the sword itself began as a pirate themed party toothpick. I added glove cuffs over the lower arms, though I'm not sure if she actually wears them in the film with this outfit; still, I prefer the gloved look

Looks great!!! Now I want to make more, lol!!!

I hear you on the turban. When I made the chief temple guard the turban was a nightmare.

Was the hat on the German Indy from monkey depot? I’m going to be finishing up a couple of Vogel’s tonight and I got the hats from monkey depot but I am not at all happy with how big they are. They’re supposed to be for 6” figures but yeah, too big.

Yes, German crusher cap came from Monkey Depot. I did run into that oversize issue with one hat I got from them once - a pith helmet that was meant for a jungle Belloq I still haven't worked out. That was the nice thing about the Syndicate Vogels - hats included on the sculpts.

Every time I see this thread pop up in recently active...I get depressed. Has there ever been a modern toyline with so many glaring main character omissions? A few is fine, typical even...but we're missing practically every major villain role, characters and troopers. No Mola Ram alone is unacceptable. But we also didn't get Vogel, German soldiers, Dietrich, Belloq (Cairo Dig-site), Thuggee Chieftain, German Mechanic, Thuggee soldier, Cairo Swordsman, Monkey Man, Hovitos, Lao Che, Chattar Lal, Sapito, etc. And that's not counting heroes we didn't get. No Willie Scott in any form, no Marion (dress), no Last Crusade Sallah, no Prologue Young Indy, no German Soldier disguise Indy, nothing from Crystal Skull whatsoever (I don't mind, but for those who do), no Teddy, I mean...by no means did I expect ALL of these. But SOME of these? Absolutely.

If I had to narrow it down to two final waves of six...I'd go with Mola Ram, Vogel, German Soldier (Dietrich head to give us a two in one), Thuggee Chieftain, German Mechanic, Thuggee Soldier, Cairo Swordsman, Willie Scott (ceremonial), Marion (dress), Prologue Indy, German Soldier Disguise Indy, and Last Crusade Sallah. That covers what I consider the biggest holes, though I would regret not getting more. But I think these are the bare minimum I could live with to feel the line is a satisfying representation of the original three films.

We got screwed out of villains most and by far. This line came out during peak "I'm offended" lunacy culture, but now that that hysteria is dying out...it's really a shame this line didn't debut just a few years later. Maybe we would have gotten some of these after all. There's still, to this day, that part of me that's still hanging out and hoping for a pseudo revival that fills the big gaps like what happened to Ghostbusters Plasma...but I just don't think it's going to happen.

No question this line suffered from the “we don’t want to offend people who don’t actually spend money on our products anyway” period. To make a toy line that many think is a hard sell to begin with…and then not give us any villains except for a couple of villains who I guess were of a less offensive demographic is inexcusable. And it’s a real shame because the figures they did give us were fantastic!! I can only imagine what some villains would have looked like. Sooo many missed opportunities.

Speaking of missed opportunities, I finished my Vogels tonight. I will say from the beginning, I am not happy with the hats. As I mentioned above, I bought these from a site that sells accessories for 6” scale figures, yet these are too big. Their stuff is normally really good. If I can find a 3d file or some other alternative I’ll probably replace the hats. I was hoping to avoid having to paint them with the trim and all but I guess it is what it is. And I also don’t like printing human heads and painting them as that’s not a strong area for me. The head I chose for Vogel is Norman Osborn. I like that his head is skinny and I think is a good stand in for Vogel plus he just looks angry and evil.

Here are my Vogels. They started from this:

And ended up like this:

Yeah, for as good as this line was, its lasting legacy will be that of unfulfilled promises and underdeveloped disappointment. When pitching an Indiana Jones line, so many of these unmade roles are implied inclusions. Who does an Indiana Jones line with multiple waves of figures...and doesn't make Mola Ram, the German Mechanic, the Thuggee Chief, the Cairo Swordsman, etc.? Two of these are from among the most iconic scenes in film history, not just the film. As it stands, if I remember correctly, other than the villain from DoD, we don't even have a villain in the line that Indiana Jones actually punched. And that's just depressing on every level.

I was looking at the head/hat that a lot of people use for Vogel and I kind of don’t like it either. To me it’s too high and looks a little off. For example if you look at the picture from the movie, the goggles are right below the insignia on the hat. On the printed custom hat, there is a lot of empty space between the top of the goggles and the insignia. Plus it only comes with the goggles so it wouldn’t work for the black outfit. I’ll have to keep looking for a better option.

If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them. I’d love to find a better hat.

The cap is a little too high, but doesn’t really bother me. I see some Imperial caps that have the same issue. If you’re looking at the Vogel head on Syndicate’s site, they have an option for goggles or no goggles. I got both.

I don’t like it. The syndicate one is too goofy high. The monkey depot one is too goofy wide, lol. I’m a stickler for accuracy. I’m going to find some files tonight and 3D print several different sizes until I get the right one. I spent too much time on the details of the uniform to have a terrible looking hat.

Great work guys! Love seeing other people's customs because they always give me fresh ideas and things that I hadn't thought of. I have been doing some Marvel customs a bit lately but I have made some progress on a Locus from Great Circle.

I know people's opinions are a bit mixed on Retroblasting. But he recently did a video discussing the Adventure Series. He raised a lot of fair points. You already talked about how there are so many glaring omissions. But the real kicker was that so much of it felt like certain characters couldn't even be paired with others. Marion wouldn't have had anything to pair with if not for Cairo Indy who was iirc an exclusive. Obi Wan Indy is an iconic look, but he's got nothing. No Lao Che, no Chinese mobsters. No Willie Scott. Yet he comes with the flaming shish kabob.

Hell they could have given us a White Dress Marion to go with Indy down in the well of souls. Nepal Marion. They could have given us a LC Salah. Btw @DarkKnight07 I know what you are saying with regards to Salah. I felt like a brain surgeon trying to kit bash his head with Kazim's Fez.

It really does feel like Disney knee-capped the adventure series team. Because you can see some absolute brilliance in what is there. Kazim is loaded like a one-man army. Freaking Toht has a melting face and you get the impression someone at Hasbro at least had fun with designing some of these. It feels like after Mola Ram got the axe the writing was on the wall, and they were just trying to fill slots in a wave to complete the BAF pieces and the "Contractual obligation" to make figures for the new film. No, Willie or Crystal Skull stuff is criminal. And as Retroblasting noted? The Russians would have given Indy an army builder if they didn't want to go with the Germans.

It's a shame but I again highly recommend Scott's work for anyone looking to round out their collection.

Beyond that? I have a few pictures but I don't have access to them atm. But I will share them later. I am working on Locus from Great Circle to go with the Voss and Great Circle Indy I have.

So I settled on this as the base body. He's taller being a 7" McFarlane. Maybe not as tall as he should be compared to Indy. But he has a bit of extra height and I think can be fudged enough.

I picked up the He Who Remains at Ollies for like $5-10? The overlay swaps and sits comfortably on Sivana.

The only thing is that I still need to find a good likeness for Tony Todd.
71s65JSUl7L.jpg

I thought about this. I tried sculpting over the hair to make him bald. Not sure it's working quite like I want. I may keep looking into Classified, etc.

Also...If anyone is looking for other figures that might work well with Indy? Hasbro revealed this guy...
Budo-02__scaled_800.jpg

He may be a bit expensive for an Army builder at $35. But I ordered him because he could pair well with Indy if he goes on an asian adventure like in Emperor's Tomb. Maybe he's trying to find the legendary Masamune. Or some other mythological artifact. All the armor can be removed too. So maybe you just source it for accessories/parts. But there's a lot on offer here. Heck, maybe that Samurai helmet itself is a rare artifact Indy is pursuing.

Maybe Indy uses the Dial and goes back in time when the various daimyos are at war? (I'm not up on my feudal Japan) but I though this guy was cool.

Okay, I feel like I can call these Vogels done now. I found a file for a German officer’s hat but it wasn’t properly scaled so it took a lot of trial and error to get the right size:

IMG_6143.jpeg

Here’s a comparison of the first version that I bought from a company that makes accessories for 6”
figures (the one I bought is on the left) and the one I printed and had to paint (on the right):

IMG_6145.jpeg

And here are each of them. Another change I made is I used rubbing alcohol to remove the very dark circles under the eyes the donor figures had. This definitely makes him look more human.

IMG_6149.jpeg

They may not be 100% screen accurate but they’re really close.

He looks all ready for Indy's fist to mess up his face now! Nice work!

Valaverse is starting a six inch WWII line next year - including both, allied and axis figures. They would be perfect for the Adventure Series.

YESSS!!!! I am interested. I still can't see him doing the symbol for Axis figures but I am honestly ok if we get some decent army builders. I wonder if he would give us tanks and vehicles too?

In the meantime I am sure I posted it before...but we do have some newer faces here that may not have seen it.

This WWII cap makes a pretty nice GI figure. Peggy too, is period appropriate. I know Spectre and I talked about Monster force in the past for some army builders. Valaverse I think tends to run cheaper?

Also was it you @SpectreOne that was discussing a jeep with me? I think I have located a 1/12 scale jeep that is RC but is cheaper than that $200 one.

JJRC-C8815-Willys-Military-Jeep-RC-Crawler-box.jpg

$65-70 but someone on Reddit said they got it for $50 with discount/coupon on Amazon. Saw a guy on youtube review it...with Indy!

Also saw some stuff on BBTS that might pair well with Indy...

Ver. C is a replica of the Venus De Milo statue. She would work well in a temple kind of scene for Indy in Greece with the column. Or you could even have her in a "office" for Indy with other artifacts. Just thought these were cool for diorama makers.

PIcked up this Jeep I talked about above on Prime day. For $50. It's a pretty nice piece for Indy. You do have to be a little careful sliding him in and out of the jeep. I tried Peggy but she does not bend enough to sit properly.
