Great news guys for me and the rest of the He-man and the Masters of the Universe fans/kids from the 80's.
Here at http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnews.php?id=8026

It has been coinfirmed today at superherohype.com that we finally have a director for a brand new MOTU movie.

This part in the article below made me giddy

""There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Heres hoping to some good times ahead and a good new movie
updated franchise.

Hopefully a dark film with a good plot this time around, at the end of the day they can't do any worse then the last He-Man movie (Though I still like it to a degree
).

Re: New He-man Masters of the Universe movie thread

They should make this one a sequel to the last one but a million times better so that we can all look back on the first one and say that we understand it better and that the newest installmsnt actually makes the first one look better.

I hope they put the cats in it this time and Prince Adam. I hope if they do this they would do a She-ra movie.

As long as Skeletor isn't so Palpatiney and it sticks more to the roots of the cartoony I'm all for it.

The latest news...

Warner Bros. Exits Masters of the Universe

Variety reports that Warner Bros. and Mattel are parting ways on Masters of the Universe, the new live-action adaptation of the Mattel toy line that the studio and producer Joel Silver have been developing since 2007.

The trade says that Mattel and WB didn't see eye to eye over the direction of the project and made a mutual decision to let the option lapse this month.

Mattel will take back the property and set it up elsewhere. The expectation is that director John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) will remain with the project, but not Silver, who is exclusive to WB.

Well, if this happens, I hope it is done right with Prince Adam and Cringer this time. Maybe an intro to Orcho with technology is what it is. They could and should do better. But oh well, we will see if it is made. With all the comic adaptations to movies, I can't see why this wouldn't be pursuied espicially with the G.I. Joe movie and also with the Transformers franchise.

Good to see it canned. I just don't think MOTU can be done right as a live action movie. The cartoon itself is bad so it's hard to adapt.

Live Action is never as good as the Cartoon in my opinion, with the exception of SW.

Re: New He-man Masters of the Universe movie thread

The only way a MOTU movie will work, is if its a dark, violent movie. It will never happen, but I can dream.

Anything else will be cheesey. And not cheesey good like the cartoon, just a bad movie.

Wow that's a bold statement seeing as everone posting in this thread is obviously a fan. Not sure where you're getting that idea from, since it was one of the most successful cartoons/toy line of the 80's and still to this day has millions of fans.

Sony Acquiring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Source:Variety, The Hollywood Reporter September 23, 2009

Just weeks after the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie left Warner Bros. Pictures, Mattel is finalizing a deal with Columbia Pictures. Escape Artists will produce the project.

Sony and Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will now start developing the project from scratch. John Stevenson had been attached to direct but is no longer attached.

In the big screen adaptation of the signature Mattel toy line, He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Considering SW is one of the few movies to start out live that's not a fair comment.

Re: New He-man Masters of the Universe movie thread

New writers have been announced today!
FINALLY! Something new so hopefully this will get the ball rolling and well get a good movie for once with an 80s property staying true to the roots.

The Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:
Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, the duo who wrote the upcoming "Predators" reboot, have been brought aboard to pen "Masters of the Universe" for Columbia.

The studio picked up movie rights to the 1980s Mattel toy property in the fall, when Mattel and Warner Bros. parted ways after the sides couldn't agree on a creative vision.

The addition of the rising writers is the first major move on the property and signals the project is being rebuilt from the ground up. While at Warners, "Masters" went through several writers and in latter stages had John Stevenson, who co-helmed "Kung Fu Panda," attached to direct.

Getting the go-ahead to tackle any major toy-brand film can be tricky. Depending on the property, writers and directors need to get a thumbs-up from the studio, which then has to win approval from the toy company. In the case of "Masters," Mattel has story approval.

In their pitch, the scribes attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately.

The '80s show, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," centered on blond warrior Prince Adam, who, after uttering the magic words "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who week after week attempted to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbues He-Man with his powers.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists are producing.

The Verve-repped Finch and Litvak made a splash last year with "Medieval," which jolted the spec market when it sold to New Regency for big bucks. That script scored the duo the coveted gig of writing the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Predators," helping the long-in-development sequel go from script to screen in just more than a year.

"Predators" opens July 9.

Sounds like the film is slightly progressing, fingers crossed that they can do all the characters and story justice.

Re: New He-man Masters of the Universe Movie

Is it a good or bad thing that Mattel has the last say on script? Remember this is MATTEL!!!

Also is story approval different then script? Hollywood and those loopholes.

Merged both your new thread and old thread together.

I don't mind the existing film in that cheezy action way of bad acting but if they can pull off a great film it could make for a great trilogy.

I wonder how homoerotic this one will be? On a scale of 1 to 10 the cartoon was an 8 and the movie was a 7.

I hope they can merge the designs and types of stories with the 2002 style of the cartoon with vintage filmation origins, the original pack in comics/dc,marvel comics flare and mattel toy concepts plus throw in some of the newer online collection. The most important thing first is director and script then after that special effects. IMO this is a goldmine waiting to happen if done right and respected seriously considering all of the properties associated with it. I just pray that it doesnt go the route of Bay transformers.

Holy crap you are so right!!!! Going the Bay route would be a knife in the heart! I know this is kinda silly but I also hope the don't go all beefcake "Magic Mike" in Eternia. Please let them stick with the original story!!!!!! Please don't make up sh*t or origins or characters. He-Man has PLENTY of characters to draw from.

I'll take Joe...what's his face from True Blood as He-Man. Don't care if he isn't blonde. That dude could rock that role.

Saw that on FB. While I was slightly invigorated with a new sense of hope, I can't let myself get too excited. This has been on standby for way too long, so i'm not expecting anything until it hits Theaters!

Id have to agree. I would love for this to be a start for a great franchise but unfortunately we all know what happened with transformers and gi joe. Maybe this will be different but right now we just don't know.

I don't mean this to be ********ed or anything but when I was a kid, like most boys I played with my he-man figures and watched the cartoon. but outside of watching the Dolph film when it came out on cable I haven't paid much attention to MOTU. I mean what do you guys really expect from a he-man film? I don't recall any particularly great back story or mythos.

IDK, I can imagine a lot.

Well, as a kid we don't usually pay attention to those details. But there is a rather large mythos around it, and a pretty good back story. It just didn't get treated well on film. Plus, not to be jerk. But hiring a one dimensional actor wasn't the best choice.
I could see the Dwayne Johnson in the role today. Despite how people think of him, he's talented enough to have last this long in several roles. It's either that, or who they got for the new Aquaman. Or possibly even Dave Bautista, as he seems to be getting better at acting.

But if there's one thing I'm tired of. Is Hollywood taking these childhood properties, and turning them into mindless blockbuster movies that have no soul or depth.
