I agree Dune probably would have done better as a series due to so much going on, trying to fit it into a movie or even two three hour ones was never going to be enough time to truly tell the whole story. Which it never is with any Book adaptation really.I describe Dune (the un filmable movie) as trying to cram all the Harry Potter movies into 90-120 minutes then still being expected to know what happens in the books.
Honestly the Dune book could easily be a quality tv show with 2-3 seasons in just book 1.
Luckly the new version is more viewer friendly than the heavily edited 84 version but I can easily see why it’s not a favorite with 1st time viewers. (It’s Dune)
Not to mention fairy tales, Joseph Campbell, Grail lore, John Ford Westerns & Akira Kurosawa films. In fairness, whilst I don't think Lucas RIPPED OFF Dune for Star Wars...I do think the influence is utterly blatant. There are countless examples of what had to have inspired ideas for a Galaxy far, far away. I mean, my God, it's all over. Not that all are identical, but think on it...
Tusken Raiders - Fremen.
Arrakis - Tatooine.
Harvesters - Sandcrawlers.
Bene Gesserit; a group of mystics that advise - Jedi
The Voice - The Force; moreso Jedi Mind Tricks.
Evil Emperor - Evil Emperor.
Sandworms - pseudo Sarlacc Pit; The Krayt Dragon in Mando - though Lucas didn't write that.
Paul Atreides - Luke Skywalker ....and Anakin in ways.
The Baron - Jabba the Hutt in SOME ways.
Duncan Idaho - Han Solo in SOME ways.
It goes on and on. I mean Dune uses old world visuals with lives in sci-fi. Star Wars uses old world concepts, like a lightsaber (sword) with a sci-fi concept. Heck ANH even mentions the SPICE mines of Kessel, the EU even expanding upon that and mentioning spice is a drug! I think it pretty cool to note that Dune def. helped influence what became SW.
