I think it's more than obvious that Lucas was inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune series. Tatooine is a barren desert planet just like Arakis. It is a useless planet that holds the key to the universe. Han is even referred to as a Spice smuggler. And I can't help but think that the dead giant snake skeleton known through the expanded universe as a Krayt Dragon was a nod to Dune's Sandworms.
Here's what just occurred to me. The Tusken Raiders have always been a favorite of mine, with an image and mystique to rival even Boba Fett. Are the Tusken Raiders supposed to be the equivalent of the Fremen? Are they supposed to be wearing stillsuits? If so, it might help shed a light on just what the Sand People's motivations and origins are. Any thoughts?
