You guys see the stuff they have for CV for Disney Toys for Star Tours? I'm excited for two things in this:

1:64 Scale Starspeeder Six Pack
Judging by the six pack, they're going to have different paintschemes AND different astro droids inside the socket! Totally excited for these. Good for dios for sure.

And more importantly:
"Large Scale" Starspeeder 1000 Playset
Why am I excited about this? I'm hoping this "large scale" playset = 1:18 scale Starspeeder. AKA a scaled Starspeeder for Hasbro figures! The measurements look like 20 inches long...which looks promising so far! I'm extra excited if that's what the sources are pointing to here.

I've wanted a 1:18 scale Starspeeder for SO long now.

Yes, the playset will be scaled to the action figures. I think they said it will hold like nine of them.

After the panel, I spoke to the trio from Disney Merchandising about a possible classic blue-and-white StarSpeeder 3000 being released using the same mold.

They didn't act like it was impossible, but said there were no plans to do so right now.

I asked, "So I should buy two of this one and paint one?"

And Brad Schoeneberg replied, "If you want one right now."

Alex

I'm seriously looking at a purchase of 3 1000 models, and if they made 3000 models, I'll get another 3. If they don't make the 3000 at all, I'll just buy 2 more 1000 models. I might custom one into a 2000 since that's never been seen yet, either. I'm just so excited that they're finally making the Starspeeder! Here's hoping for a working droid socket!!

I wish we had an ETA on them. And I wonder if they're planning on releasing a new pilot figure for these vehicles or not.

If I have to get it off ebay, I will but I need a Starspeeder. I have a cantina display, and I'd love to replace my Stass Allie speeder and Anakin airspeeder with a Starspeeder releasing passengers.

Is there an official site where you buy this, and when will it be available?

After those slides came up, I was so pumped knowing I didn't need to buy the out of scale current Starpeeders as we'll finally be getting a full size one next year!

You'll have to put your customizing recipe on here, so I can make a good blue and white version. Hey, I've already got half the passengers ready to ride this thing - Cast Member, Kaink, Teek, Ree-Yees, Chewie, new Ackbar, may have to get some younglings to fill it out, etc.

Well, I don't have the Star tours boarding set, so when I get this, my passengers will be Luke Skywalker, Han solo, Princess Leia, Ody Mandrell, Teemto Pagallies, and some others I'm not sure of yet.

This is where articulated knees becomes a must. Star Tours CM and Ree-Yees have no knees, which means no ride in the SS1000.

Are the new muppet figures from the CV presentation going to be pvc like the previous boxed set or carded and articulated like the Disney figures. Also is Goofy dressed as Sallah going to be carded like Indy Mickey? Thanks.

i missed out on the Disney panel at CV but I'm very excited about a 3.75" scale starspeeder....put me down for at least 2

was able to get the new star speeder and the boarding pass at Hollywood Mickey's at MGM (Star Tours was sold out of both at the time and didn't want to wait on the line to check if they were restocked later).

the muppet figures look cool but would rather have some articulation like the Disney figures....everytime i see the PVC set i just pass on it.

I shot video of MOST of the Disney Parks Collector Panel. It is now live on YouTube at:
Alex's Playlist

I recommend watching them in numerical sequence. Aside from putting my own Muppet-specific question from the Q&A at the end of the Muppet segment instead of where it actually fell, I have presented them in linear order in the Playlist.

Listen for me also when they start talking about the playset... just before the announcement, I had a hunch what he was leading up to, and you hear me breathe, "Oh please..."

Then when he actually shows the slide and says it, I hiss an exultant "YES!"

***

To address some of the questions that have been asked in this thread...

The StarSpeeder will have all five doors on the side, but only three rows of seats. So, hopefully, even those figures without articulated knees can enjoy a ride.

Brad Schoeneberg did specifically mention that it was compatible with Hasbro and *Kenner* figures, so the omission of the two in-between rows is very likely a deliberate design choice and not simply a cost-cutting maneuver.

The Muppet-as-Star-Wars will be poseable this time, sold in two-packs. I believe they will be carded.

Goofy as Sallah will be in a two-pack with a reissue of Mickey as Indy. They will include the "Disney-themed Ark" with what appear to be Donald Duck seraphim on top.

I'm working on a writeup about the panel for EndorExpress.net right now, actually. Someone linked me here and I put it on hold. I wasn't able to take stills while shooting video too, but we just got permission to use pics from Orlando Attractions Magazine, so I'm doing a text article in addition to the video recap.

I recently dug out my own StarSpeeder 3000 mockup from a few years ago...

dioextss3kisorex2jt.jpg

... and was surprised to note that it was a full 19" long from nose to tail. I arrived at that size by scaling up my reference images until the Artoo in the filming model was the same size as an action figure.

A friend who worked at Star Tours at the time said it should be slightly bigger, since the doors on the side weren't quite as tall as Threepio and they should have been taller.

But since I was using photos printed onto clear vinyl sheets, stopping at 19 inches meant only two sheets per side instead of three. Which meant only one SEAM per side instead of two. (Or more if the added height went off the short edge of the paper.)

Sadly, over time the adhesive that I used did not react well to the vinyl, and the artwork self-destructed. All that's left is the basic shape made of solid styrofoam and a thin layer of white poster paper.

For more pics of how it looked when it was first made, consult this thread and this thread.

But if the official one is 20" long, I'd say it's going to be perfect.

I'm so stupidly excited for this craft. 2011 can't come soon enough. I'm hoping it may show up before the attraction re-opens.

I posted this over in the Vintage collection section but no one seemed to care and the moderator I asked said it wasn't Hasbro so there wouldn't be a thread created for it (neither were R2-MK or the Boarding Party set or any of the other 3 3/4" figures produced through Star Tours and got their own threads but whatever). So anyhow, i figured seeing as there's a thread here, I should post this stuff here. It's no new info, but it helps put the thing in perspective!

Oh and Alex, that Starspeeder you custom-built is awesome! too bad it didn't last.

Looking at the slides of the Disney CV presentation, and making the assumption that the measurements that can just be made out on the slide pertaining to this vehicle will reflect what we get as a toy in 2011, this toy could well be a full 20" in length, putting it right up there amongst the largest of star Wars toys produced.

I did some really rough comps below, throwing in the AT-TE from RS's great photo archives and the Starspeeder off the Disney slides. Please note these are rough comps and someone may be able to do some more accurate ones, but if my estimates are accurate, then this could be a spectacularly large vehicle, with almost as much bulk as the AT-TE's main body, sitting very comfortably in the BMF/BAT-AT size range. I'm surprised more folks aren't talking about this vehicle. I think it's pretty awesome news and hope to get one, assuming it isn't priced too exhorbitantly.

I'm honestly figuring it to be about $100-$150. Which means I should be able to buy a new one every other week or so. I'm still hoping more light will be shed on our new pilot soon, and if there's a possibility of a plastic version as well.

Well, the Captain info has been released. Say hello to AC-38: Captain "Ace" which is an AC-Series Pilot Droid, the precursor to the RX-Series. Hi-Rez shot follows.
st900900LARGE.jpg

If he doesn't get made, this will be a ridiculously simple custom for me to make, once I find out his height.

This guy would be a shoe in for a figure I would think.

Just curious - how do you imagine he'd be a ridiculously easy custom? I appreciate the head can be pulled from the old Rex figure, but the body is unfamilar (to me at least). Is there a figure out there are already uses this body type?

Anyways, I am certain we'll get him eventually. With the starspeeder 1000 in 2011, I am guessing we might have to wait another year or so for him, but I'd be very surprised if we don't see him in plastic in the longer run, along with the even easier (pretty much a straightrepaint) serving droid...

startours2_img.jpg

Well, okay maybe not ridiculous easy. But I do believe he can be customed.

REX head for sure. It'd probably require a 3PO upper torso with some sculpting to make those shoulder flares. Lower body? I could get away with a 2-1B clear midsection. Bottom would be the hardest..maybe Retail Droid legs. Those legs are rather short as well. Arms might need sculpting too, as they need to be short. But that's if he's going to be as short as I think he is. He might be a different scale all together and none of these pieces will mix anyway without modification.

Hope they make a figure of him then. Otherwise I'll be looking at a rag-tag custom.

I love the vehicle and the pilot. Loved all the droids from the past and can't wait for this new one.

Have only been to Star Tours once. It was a lot of fun for me and can't wait for the new one to open.

I will be in Orlando next April. Hope that is when it is opened!

Inspired by RevStrone's comparison pics of the SS1K and the AT-TE, I thought I'd examine just how useful the head of a Rex action figure would be for an Ace custom...

I resized the image of Ace until his head was approximately as large as Rex's. The Rex figure is 3.5" tall, so that would make an Ace figure right at 4.5"

However, the Rex action figure was actually scaled up from his proportionate height to other Star Wars figures. Scale was all over the place in the Star Tours line.

I estimated the size of a real Rex animatronic from a 1987 photo with George Lucas leaning against the AA. I know from CV that I'm a little taller than George, so I took a photo of myself in the same pose leaning my arm against a tape measure against the wall.

The height of the Rex animatron, charted that way, falls at an approximate 3-foot height with his head at the lowest position, and an approximate 3.5-foot height with the head fully extended.

Just to ballpark things, if a 4" figure is a 6-foot man, then a 3-foot robot would have only been a 2" action figure, so you can see why they scaled him up.

But if the head of Ace is the same size as the head of Rex, then Ace would be 4.5 feet tall as a real-life Audio-Animatronic.

Which would translate to about a 3" tall robot action figure, properly scaled to the rest of the Star Wars line.

Again, these are all really rough estimates and approximations, based on the pivotal assumption that the two robots' heads are the same size.

But maybe the analysis will be useful to my fellow customizers... should the action figure somehow NEED to be hand-crafted, which I doubt.

Just stumbled across Alex's pic by total happenstance in the photopost section which led me here, didn't know about this thread but I am glad I found it! Really good stuff, I am not a big fan of Star Tours save for the fact that there's some cool droids, some of the designs are really interesting and these new ones have me stoked.

Nice work Alex! That's excellent. Interesting seeing your comparrison image there - it really dramatically illustrates how different Rex and Ace's heads actually are - much more so than I thought. It's been a while since I dug out my Rex figure to look at him. Here's hoping we get a nice new sculpt that's up to modern standards.

Yeah, after seeing the heads, I'd opt to see if they make an all new figure. Rex's head looks too different to Ace's.

I still wish to know who's voicing Ace though.

So will the starspeeder be availabele online? If so, where?

Also, they absolutely must make a Captain Ace toy! Hey, does anyone else think they may have renamed him and given him a new form because he could be confused with Clone Captain Rex?

I don't think that, personally, because I was so miffed about them naming another character "Captain Rex" that I have still never watched Clone Wars.

I've heard that Anakin Solo was killed off because Lucasfilm was worried that readers would get him confused with Anakin Skywalker once the prequels came out, though, so you may have something there.

But according to Tom Fitzgerald's recent blog, changing Rex was a natural outgrowth of their decision to move backwards in the timeline.

After all, Rex has told us for 23 years that this was his 'first flight', and indeed his REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT pitot tube tag was still hanging off him until the very last first flight.

Other details from the queue support the concept that the RX pilots were brand new...

In Orlando, there once was an intermittent shadow cast by an EV-series droid welding together an RX in a room adjacent to Sector 2 Droidnostics (a detail unfortunately inoperative in both of my most recent visits, 2007 and 2010). I believe this detail still worked in Anaheim's version up until the very end.

From a vid-screen announcement about the StarSpeeder 3000: "And all our StarSpeeders are piloted by the newest, most reliable RX droids, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the sights."

Of course, once we're 'backstage', we hear a different account of the pilot droids from what the propaganda screen has been telling us. G2-4T can be heard telling his supervisor, "Hey! Get off my servos! I’m not the one who purchased all those defective RX pilots."

(And from the Electronic Presskit for Star Tours, circa 1987, there's a snippet of alternate dialogue for the G2-9T scene, which includes this announcement:

Female Supervisor: RX-24, RX-24, please report immediately to Droid Ready Room.

That's actually the only place that Captain Rex's full robotic designation would have been heard. I love the implication that he hasn't even been on his first flight yet, and already he's lost.)

But where were we in the Star Wars timeline when Rex came online? Well, Threepio's dialogue in the queue references the Ewoks believing he had magic on Endor, so it's firmly after the events of Episode 6.

So, in the post-Return of the Jedi setting of the 1987 version of Star Tours, it wasn't just RX-24 who was on his first flight, but that entire type of pilot droid was a bit "fresh off the assembly line" (to quote C-3PO on the Electronic Presskit).

So, with the 2011 version of Star Tours set somewhere between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope, then there was never really any chance of RX-24 or any other droid of his type being in Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.

By the way, on his blog, Fitzgerald talks about their internal classification system for the two storylines, with the one post-Jedi being "6.5" and the one in between prequels and classic trilogy being "3.5". I have to say, it's a heckuva lot easier to use those numbers than it is to keep explaining it longhand as I've just done.

P.S.
I too wonder who will be voicing Ace! I knew someone who was in attendance at that event, and I wish I could've gone with him, because I would have done everything in my power to ask that very question.

And I am not sure whether the SS1K playset will be available online or not. It probably will, but you never can tell with the Park-exclusive merchandise.

I am guessing Patrick Warburton

Since they already use his voice for Soarin' and he is a voice-over god [Buzz Lightyear/Kronk/Alien cop [Chicken Little]/Royal Pain [Sky High]]

His deadpan delivery would be prefect-o

Also I want 3 3/4" figures of all 6 astromechs from the different Star Speeders [maybe a multipack

One of them looks very much like R4-J1 to me.

I took another look @ the slide and came up with the following known droid comparisons
Clockwise from the top right-
1)Cropped off
2)R2-A6
3)R4-J1
4)R2-M5
5)R2-A5
6)R2-D2

That would be AWESOME.

The astros in that 6-pack do look pretty familiar...I'm surprised they put an cone headed R4 unit inside a socket...due to the whole "1 hyperspace coordinate" thing... But I gotta admit, it looks cool.

The same thing bugs me about the X-wing outside the Star Tours in Paris... it has an R4 in its socket too.

Alex

I have no problem with it at all. It's only EU extrapolations that have brought us the notion of the single co-rodinate. Aren't a slew of the Jedi droids in the PT and CW supposed to be R4s with different dome shapes? Plus, there's even one in an X-Wing in ANH:

73joqt.jpg

Thanks to Pod and his awesome astromech reference site for the images.

Personally, I've given up trying to reconcile droid numbers and styles with specific functions. It's pretty clear George doesn't hold that as any kind of rule, and even in ANH, Luke calls R5-D4 an R2 unit. I think the EU following have grown too attached to the lore surrounding these droids, which appears to me to have been flawed from day one, even if it does provide us with a handy shorthand for describing the different dome styles. Anyways, I don't let the contradictions bug me anymore. It's a big galaxy out there and there are all sorts of astromechs with all sorts of domes.

FYI, Disney Parks are selling the CV Exclusive Starspeeder 1000. Picked one up, it'll hold me over till I get the *big* one.

I know this isn't the right section but does anyone know when the new ride is supposed to open? Trying to plan a trip and want to make sure it's up and running.

Don't take this as gospel, but I've heard mid to late May 2011 is what they're shooting for at Disneyland. Not sure if it's going to happen or not, since it's still a ways off.

I don't have a date for WDW's.

Thanks for the info. Thats around the time I'm shooting for so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
