Well, I thought I would take one of my DS Troopers and convert him over to the vintage style console operator from ANH. I painted the tunic dark grey, drilled out the head of the POTF2 version and put a strapless helmet from the TAC version on him. A small piece of wire painted black completes the figure. I also have a comparison shot to the regular version, and note that I did the 'ol boil-and-freeze to both as well 8)

This guy looks great. It has both a vintage and modern feel to it. I really like the addition of the cord on the helmet.

Can anybody confirm that his suit was really grey? I'm thinking its just the lighting off the console that makes it look grey. I know that Kenner made the Death Squad Trooper in a grey suit, but I always thought it was a mistake, sorta like Walrus Man having webbed feet.

I think it's just the glow from the console making it appear gray. His helmet also appears gray where the light hits it.

I brightened up the picture a bit and I would say it's definitely not black. It seems grey to me, but with a greenish military style tone.

I think I'm going to hold on making this custom because I could definitely see Hasbro re-releasing it in different colors. It's too good of a sculpt to not re-use it.

Daigo_Bah- The head swap looks great and the dangling wire was a very nice touch. My only minor negative thought was the grey paint was too flat. It seems like it just needs a slight sheen to it.

Thanks for all the great comments! Yeah, I'd put money on that outfit being a shade of grey and not black at all. You can compare it to the console and helmet in the same pic, regardless of lighting. AresX, I know what you mean about the flatness of the color. I used to use a spray gloss for customs, and just thought it was too shiny. In my comparison pic, you can see the sheen of the regular fig compared to my painted one, but in person, I think the dull coat looks more like fabric (since heavy cotton fabric isn't shiny) but then it stands out a bit next to an actual production figure

Does anyone know for sure whether the Imperial officer uniforms in ANH are more olive than gray? In ESB and ROTJ they seem more gray but in ANH they seem more green. Is this a lighting or film thing? Maybe someone has seen a comparison pic or actually seen the uniforms from each of these films side by side in an exhibit.

I prefer the flat look. I often repaint even my black figures with a flat. I don't like the uniforms to have a shine. Makes the fabric look like rubber or nylon.

Great idea! The head swap and added cord are very well executed.

Unfortunately, the rest of the body needs quite a bit of work in order to give the full Death Squad Commander effect. You can see in the picture you posted that he wears the rare single-breasted tunic exclusive to ANH, and in wider shots you can tell that his hands are bare and that he's wearing shoes instead of boots.

I don't mean that as a criticism of your work in any way, as I don't really know what else you could do short of sculpting your own figure. Perhaps the legs from the new Rebel Honour Guard figure would be a good start though.

Have you tried a satin finish spray? That's what I used when repainting a 12" Speederbike once. It gave only a slight sheen.

I'm not talking a glossy look. Just a slight sheen. I've done a lot of figures in flat colors too and it always seemed like they stuck out like a sore thumb next to the Hasbro figures.

Re: Death Star console operator (Death Squad Commander

Neat homage to the classic line. I wound up with a spare DS Trooper with a glitch on his torso (some sort of mold defect and a paint smear), so I decided to make one of these. So far, I've only primed him. Now if I can just find the box that my POTF2 DS Troopers are in!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Re: Death Star console operator (Death Squad Commander

I bought another DST the other day to do a paint job like this officer. Now I'll have to borrow your head swap idea
. Good job Daig! On a side note, if you make a small notch on the holster where the gun handle rests, the Rebel Fleet Trooper blaster that comes with Gen. Dodonna fits in nicely.

Yes, they should easily release a repaint like this.

Question: Where/how did you attach the cord? Thanks!

Great job. Hasbro should consider making this figure.

Re: Death Star console operator (Death Squad Comma

Thanks guys, and sorry I didn't answer you earlier, DJ! I have a couple pics of the console I made to go along with the figure. It's not exactly accurately shaped, because each panel should be split inbetween down to their knees or so, but the plumbing piece I used was too dense to cut! I made decals in photoshop and stuck them onto 8 foamcore shapes to make the console, and painted everything black.

Edit: by the way, I didn't make decals for the panels where he actually touches, because the particular height of this diorama scene in my room is above the level of being able to see the panels themselves. I did make decals for the DS2 versions a couple years back though:
