I have had this project shelved for years because I was always stuck on how to reattach the cockpit back to the ship. My goal was to update the Outrider and make it more accurate. The rotating B-wing-like feature and big side gun is not accurate and is never present in any media. Now that I have much more experience customizing, I carried over a trick from an Action Fleet custom I did and applied it to this custom.
Here is the original Outrider
I was able to find one for cheap and without stickers. Here is what it looked like after removing certain parts.
So now that I removed the part where the cockpit clips into place, I had to come up with another way to attach it. I bought an aluminium pipe from Home Depot. They had different metal rods to choose from, but I was afraid they were too heavy, so I settled with this one. Plus it is hollow.
Practicing on a spare Outrider, this was what I came up with.
Once that was figured out, I inserted the pipe and used superglue to hold it in place. The holes were made so they were just big enough to fit the pipe in. Then I added some milliput to make sure it holds. Afterwards I covered the exposed areas after cutting off parts of the ship. I masked off the landing gear and spray painted the ship with Rust-Oleum Perfect Gray. I hand painted everything else and finally weathered it.
After having this shelved for years, I'm super pumped I was finally able to complete this! I'm just touching up a few areas, and I plan to superglue the cockpit in place. The aluminium pipes I used are pretty secure, but I want to use superglue to have that added support.
Also if interested, here is a look at my super-articulated Dash Rendar
