Darkknight’s Customs

Yeah! That looks like it might be promising! Might do some experimenting myself now.

Just got back from Joanns. I liked the one I showed in the picture above but unfortunately the roots are very dark and overall it’s too long so it would need to be trimmed and then it would be too dark. I went with a lighter color that’s the right color throughout but you lose some of the shading. I’ll post my results. It’s either going to make it more or less passable or it’s going to look terrible. Good thing is you get a lot of fur for cheap so there’s plenty to experiment with.

Faux fur is everywhere; clothes, toys, stuffies...
Thrift shops and (eventually) garage sales are great places to shop.
Here is my WIP that I started long ago. BTW, Polly Pocket type figures also come articulated. You might need 2 figures though since it is either arms OR legs that are articulated.

Nuts, now I feel compelled to do a more accurate wam! Reading up on him and seeing the parts above I was reminded he’s more like ewok sized so clearly joh yowzah is waaay too big. I was going to scrap the one I’ve made so far cause I was like this is more in 6” scale. And then it hit me! Add some fur to it and pit it in my 6” scale Jabba diorama! At least this way it won’t go to waste. But now I hope the door to making 6” customs isn’t opened...

I just made this guy too! Been trying to knock out the Jabba goons for years and only in the last couple of weeks did I finish this barge gunner. Used a Bespin Luke but did not paint him, almost went with the same head of AT-ST Marquand as well, finally went with a GI Joe Law & Order instead but it's remarkable how our minds were working in the same way on this character. Of all the skiff and barge guys, this is one of those I think is least likely to be made by Hasbro, nice work on him!

Great minds think alike!

I went with the gray since it looks gray to me in the movie but I was not expecting the gray I used to have a slight gloss to it. It’s freaking gray!!! Gray should never be glossy. Oh well.

I've done plenty of figures where I've let the color override the gloss/flat element even though it bothers me too, maybe try some dullcote to give the finish a flat look. I resist painting guys nowadays because I get frustrated by joint rub issues and paint coming off. Sometimes there's not a problem, sometimes there is, but generally now I try to find donor joints that give the color I'm looking for. Makes it a harder process because good combos can take time to come up with. Sometimes I'll be at a loss or dead end on a figure and then a few years go by and there are often good candidates that come into existence to boil and pop arms and legs that will work on a particular need.

Yeah that joint rub is a real pain. I usually try to keep it in the pose it’s going to stay in while in the diorama and I don’t plan on moving them around too much to avoid any problems. For some reason the gray paint I used didn’t pose any trouble as I had to move his arms quite a bit so I was pleasantly surprised. The worst is when you have to make a custom paint color and then worry about it getting messed up later. Some of the colors I’ve mixed I couldn’t possibly tell you what went in to making them or how much.

So I redid the aqualish knowing now that he shared his costume with palejo. I’m pretty happy with the palejo I made and didn’t want to switch the head back and forth so I felt I needed to do a more accurate one instead of putting ponda bobas head on fixer’s body which I did initially.

I think this is a more accurate version. I used the potj darth maul body. To make it less darth mauley, I trimmed his skirt and glued it down so it wasn’t so wide. Then i added a belt with a holster to fill the gap from his billowy top and his waist. I was going to call it done last night but then I saw in another picture I found that he clearly has the tube thing like palejo has so I had to add that. Oh and I think the robes that are kind of split between his legs works because the costume in the movie has a similar look.

There is the Darth Maul arm stance, but I positioned the holster in such a way as that it looks like he's a gunslinger ready to draw. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I was recently asked if I’d be willing to do some commissions, and I thought, well, sure, why not!

So if anyone is interested, I can make any figure that I’ve posted in my threads and will make it look exactly as pictured here. They’re all either from Jabba’s palace/skiffs/barge or the cantina.

You can pm me if interested.

I love the soft goods, DK. You ARE the man!

Thank you! Although I can’t take credit for making the soft goods as a fellow member gave them to me. But incorporating them and the rest was me. But making soft goods is not a skill I’ve developed yet.

Here are some recent commissions I did. My first commission so I was pretty honored to be making customs for someone else for them to display!

I also included some pics of them in my dioramas to show them “in action.” You’ll notice some of my other customs populating the scenes too!

I'm just getting around to posting these guys today. Starting a Custom Thread of my own. I have a few that I did a while back that I'm going to post that have never been seen by anyone (not painted, but one day). I wish I had my barge and cantina setup currently, but these will eventually be awesome on display. Love that you got some pics with your stuff!!
Thanks so much!!!

Any time

Any time! And if you decide to do some more commissions I’m ready to do them.

I’m waiting for the Jabba skiff guard three packs to come so I can do my last six customs (two for the barge, two for jabbas palace and two for the cantina). The only dioramas I have that need customs are the skiff/barge, palace and cantina and I’ve pretty much done everyone I want, which was a lot!

Oh, I should be getting a custom wam lufba head to go with my attempt at that character. The joh yowza head just did not work even though I thought I was being clever by repositioning it. So we’ll see how this goes.

So yeah, I’ll soon be “retired” so I’ll have plenty of time for commissions!

Okay, I FINALLY finished wam lufba. It’s not perfect. It’s probably at the bottom of my list of all the customs I’ve made. And it’s gone through several changes. I feel in the end I managed to elevate it from a wow that’s pretty bad to ehhh I guess that’ll do. After starting him I realized I wasn’t super keen on even doing him. But then I was like I’ve come this far might as well finish it. Yeah he’s a bit too tall. But I’ll stick him in a dark corner next to someone whose talllol.

Here’s the base figure:

Then I made some cuts and modifications and came up with this

Clearly the non soft goods look did not work at all. So then I added some fur. But it still didn’t look right with that modified joh yowzah head.

So I bought a custom head and put it on the furry body and came up with this:

But the color was not right. So with a little modification, this is my final wam lufba. For better or worse.

I’ve already started my next four customs (doing two each of two different barge guards) and these I am excited about!

The first incarnation wasn't that bad, seriously it was a decent custom. This one? Is really good. He's not often made and that's the best one I've seen.

I agree! I’ve seen maybe ten Wams, and this is definitely the best. That’s a TOP SHELF custom!

Wow! Thanks guys! You’ve definitely made me feel a lot better about my wam!!!

I finished the last two spacers tonight. I was going to use two Brock starshers since I needed two skiff sets to make my final four customs, but based on the suggestion I got a page or two ago, I had to go with Cornelius in space suit as it’s the exact same costume.

Only issue I’m having is if it needs more embellishments. For instance I gave it a little black trim by the neck and a black patch on the forearms as that can be seen in the movie. It looks like there were some variations between its many onscreen appearances. For example, in the get smart scene you can see black patches on the torso but in the behind the scenes Star Wars photo those clearly aren’t there. It looks like in the sw photo the zipper down the middle might be black and possibly the gloves are a different shade? Also it appears the helmet is white. Any thoughts or clearer photos of the costumes as used in sw?

Those look great! Really cool to see these today, also like the ref pics (Get Smart as a source is beyond cool). My silver spacers are totally inaccurate too. I added a lot of details that aren't there, partly because I lacked clarity with the reference material I used and partly because I'm lazy and habitually inaccurate when I customize. I get all jazzed and start adding bits and baubles, it's usually too difficult to resist the opportunity to use greeblies on a figure I guess. I think you pretty well nailed them as far as I can tell, they look pretty good on the accuracy scale compared to the Star Wars photos, but I'd always advocate to pick up a few more base figures and crank out alternate versions if you want. For these guys? The thing about my own take that bugs me???...... is the helmets and open face or clear/solid black opaque visor options. I mean,,, there's multiple spacers so trying even more than two takes is a worthwhile endeavor.

Yeah, I totally get wanting to spruce figures up by adding things. That was my big issue with these guys is they just seem so plain. Besides the shiny silver suits! I think the visors open was just in between takes. All the film shots I’ve seen the visors are dark and closed. There’s the one guy who does have a clear visor but he’s not one of the two silver guys.

I found the perfect spot for wam in my diorama! The main issue with him was possibly his height in being too tall. But I addressed that by putting him next to ephant mon and then the people behind him are on steps so any height issues taken care of!

That's a heckuva Jabba display, lots and lots of cool custom goodness in there!

Thank you! It does get a bit crowded but there are so many cool characters in there I had to put in a lot! I’ve got two more I've started and I think that’ll be it.

Very cool! All of it. (But especially the yuzzum.)

Wow! Thank you very much! I'm honestly surprised at how much love my yuzzum has gotten! (Am I allowed to say that? That sounds filthy.) I debated even finishing that figure and felt it was one of my worst customs, but I think adding the fur made all the difference, and changing the head too. I feel a lot better about it now thanks to all the feedback, so thank you!

My current work in progress. I’ve been kind of dragging my feet on it but I’m building momentum now that I’ve figured out how to do certain parts of him. It wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it was going to be that’s for sure.
