Darkknight’s Customs

The alcove looks great and so do the slots. I need to get around to making those!
Thanks! Yeah, I’ve had those slot machines for a couple years now I think and I just never got around to painting them. But now that I’m redoing the diorama I have some things I’d like to somewhat cover up (the poles on the utility shelf) and these would be perfect.

Almost not worth posting, lol! I figured even though the new Jabba set comes with a bunch of non Jabba specific glassware and plates and all that, I’ll still use them. But I wanted at least one recognizable piece.

I’d also like to say this was really involved and that I carved it by hand and all, but no, it’s 3D printed and took like a minute to paint. Two coats.

I did a 6” custom of the grey human gunner from the sail barge. When I saw there was a gi Joe figure coming out that has a similar type hat I thought oh I should do this guy! By the time the figure came out I kind of lost steam for making him but I eventually got him done.

Seeing as how he’s a gunner used to using a rail cannon I figure he’d probably walk around with two blasters.

I’ve learned by now when I tell myself there’s no way I’m going to make customs of xyz…I’m going to make customs of xyz.

First it was 3.75” Star Wars figures. Then it was 6” Star Wars figures. And now, it’s 6” Indiana Jones figures. Again I was motivated by Hasbro not making some key figures that they should have done. I think I have around five lined up.

Here’s the first one. 6” Lao Che.

ha-ha-HA!!!! NICE CUSTOM, DARKKNIGHT!!!!!

That Marvel head is so perfect, it's like Hasbro knew it could work for this. One down, four to go. Can't wait to see 'em!

Okay, I wasn’t overly happy with him so I made some changes. I’m pretty happy with him now.

Here’s 2.0:

And here’s 3.0 with some not so pencil skinny thin looking legs:

IMG_1069.jpeg

Here’s what’s going on behind the scenes. I added some leg extensions so he’d be taller and I added the map room Indy’s skirt to make the swordsman’s robes a little wider:

I finished my trio of Cairo swordsman tonight. I wasn’t planing on doing more than one but when I got several map room Indy’s for $7 I was like well, might as well make more!

I was torn on putting different heads under the turbans but after having to scrape out the head for the Cairo Swordsman I thought that seemed like a lot of effort for just a tiny sliver of face plus a lot of extra money to get extra heads I could use. But I figured hey, Hasbro would do the same! But the thing I did that Hasbro wouldn’t bother to do is I altered their heights so they’re all different.

First up are the two I finished tonight:

And here are all three together:

Work in progress. I finally got the legs in today and didn’t want to start until I had them and made more progress tonight than I thought I would. Still have a ways to go though to try and get it right. The two areas that concern me the most are the turban which isn’t as big as I’d like but it’s the only one in this scale I could find. I did cut a long strip of fabric and tried to wrap one but after several attempts I didn’t get anywhere. The other area of concern are the pants on the legs aren’t billowy enough so I’m going to have to try and make some pants with some looser fabric which well, I’m not entirely sure how I’ll go about that.

Don’t mind the guys doing handstands in the background. I dribbled some gorilla glue down their legs to try to get their hip joints from causing them to fall over. The guy in the sandy outfit finally cooperated.

The Chief Temple Guard presented some challenges for me which is why it took so long to finish. For starters, I couldn’t figure out how to make his billowy pants. I was going to use fabric, but that looked awful. Just using regular legs didn’t look accurate at all so that wasn’t an option. I then added a strip of plastic between his legs to try and recreate the look but that just wasn’t right either. I finally discovered another figure that had the right pants.

The other issue was trying to figure out how to paint his skin. I really struggled with how to paint him to make him look like a sweaty white guy who was painted to look like a non-white guy. I tried several mixtures, ordered a new color off eBay, and nothing looked right. I used up two extra gung ho figures testing out different colors and mixtures. I finally figured it out though.

Here’s the original version before first pants alteration attempt:

Here’s first attempt at making them look better:

And here’s “okay, I just need new legs altogether”:

You are a true problem solver. I appreciate hearing the process and road blocks. It's part of the art IMO.

He looks magnificent!

Some glue dries clear so dabbing with a pin will get you beads of sweat, if that is what you are going for.

Thank you!! I love the problem solving aspect of it, but sometimes it can get a little frustrating. I'm working on one more Indy custom and I was just staring at it tonight going, "now how am I going to do that?!?!!?"

I appreciate the tip! I was just speaking hyperbolically regarding what the guy in the movie looks like and wasn't planning on adding actual sweat to the figure, but that would be cool.

Really cool one, that's a lot of work that went into him and it pays off with the results. I doubt Hasbro will ever revisit the line to give us this one but it almost doesn't matter because yours would be hard for them to top.

Since Hasbro decided they weren’t going to make Mola Ram, and knowing my collection wouldn’t be complete without one, I knew I had to make one. I had a really hard time figuring out the robes and took a couple month break from working on it until I finally figured it out.

I also got kind of burnt out on making customs but knowing I was halfway through with I was like fine, let’s just finish it.

Overall I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Now I’m taking a vacation from customs!

Got a flamin' heart, can't get my fill"
