Welcome to BONSAI'S BIG COLLECTION... of little figures!

I hope you enjoy this limelight. For better or worse it also acts as a bit of a vintage Star Wars figure price guide. So feel free to make a cup of tea, or pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the pics - take your time and "don't be hasty"

So how did I put my collection together? well...

STEP ONE: Buy bucketloads of vintage Star Wars figures.o-o
Picture231.jpg

Picture241.jpg

STEP TWO: Pick out the creme de la creme to make two lovely sets for these two lovelies. They can play with them... WHEN I DIE!
Picture226.jpg

STEP THREE: Challenge myself to find one variant to go with every figure (occasionally I've cheated and picked more than one!). No prototypes or bootlegs, just the coolest regular production figure that my budget will stretch to. Here are the results so far...

Hope you enjoy the photos. I still have Power Of The Force to add to the limelight, and seeing as they dont come with twin variants I have something a little special planned for them - watch this space...

It’s now time to reveal the last major part of this limelight – the Power Of The Force. The final wave of figures by Kenner and often referred to as the ‘Last 17’. The Power Of The Force line represents the end of vintage Star Wars (although Droids and Ewoks collectors might argue otherwise) but what if it wasn’t the end? What if the Power Of The Force line hadn’t been cut short? What if Kenner had released a second wave of POTF figures?

Just imagine what those figures might have looked like…

potf_zps720924b6.jpg
Imperial Gunner (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £105
Grand Moff Tarkin: We begin this imagined ‘2nd wave’ of the Power Of The Force figure line with the one character that all vintage collectors seem to have wanted – Grand Moff Tarkin. Peter Cushing’s cold, calculating Governor was the ‘face’ of the Empire for the original Star Wars movie and it’s a great shame he was never created for the vintage line. Now thanks to the skills of customizers here he is! Most Tarkin customs are simple head swaps using the Imperial Commander figure but as you can see this one is a bit more elaborate. He comes with a black blaster (the same as the Imperial Gunner) and matching black comm (based on the Cloud Car Pilots). The Imperial uniforms seem to be inspired by WWII German officers and the black Endor blaster has a similar look to the standard issue Luger so it seems a good sidearm for Tarkin.

potf2_zpscc67ad36.jpg
Luke Stormtrooper (+ Coin / Black Blaster) C9.5 1984 no COO £170
Chewbacca (Death Star Prisoner): Chewbacca is the only figure amongst the main ensemble of heroes who never changed throughout the vintage line so I thought it would be fun to add a new version. I haven’t changed the actual figure here but rather have created this ‘Death Star Prisoner’ version by adding silver binders and a very cool little ‘Mouse Droid’. The Mouse Droid would have been too small and poor value to release as a standalone figure but as an accessory it works very well and along with a manacled Chewie would no doubt have been a fun addition to those vintage Death Star playsets.

potf3_zps548fa86e.jpg
Lando Calrissian General (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £95
Rebel Fleet Trooper: The Rebel Fleet Trooper is probably the most commonly created custom figure, and I suspect that if Kenner had continued the Power Of The Force line they would have got around to creating this guy. I like the attention to detail that the customizer has gone to here, with extra touches like the radio antennae on the helmet, the chin strap and the paint apps to the blaster.

potf4_zpsc7c3dc8b.jpg
Amanaman (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £100
Nabrun Leids: This beautiful custom really does showcase the craftsmanship involved, and kudos to EmmaG the artist who created this figure for me. The eagle eyed amongst you will be able to spot that this is a heavily modified vintage Greedo. I’ve paired this figure alongside the similarly impressive Amanaman because I think it helps make the point that creating a four-armed articulated figure probably wouldn’t have been beyond Kenner at the time of POTF.

potf5_zpsad8c0106.jpg
Anakin Skywalker (+ Coin) C9.5 no COO £250
General Rieekan: There is something very cool about the Rebel Hoth uniforms and I particularly like the neck ruff and the detachable helmet on this figure – he would have made a great occupant for the little HQ building in the Imperial Attack Base playset!

potf6_zps711793a8.jpg

Warok (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £60
Han Solo (Endor Disguise): This custom is a simple head swap for the AT-ST Driver but I do like the helmet and of course Han is the kind of guy who keeps his own personal blaster – even when he’s in disguise!

potf7_zps658a9447.jpg

A-Wing Pilot (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £80
Yavin Ceremonial Guard: Admiral Ackbars legs + AT-ST Drivers torso + Death Squad Commanders head + Emperors Royal Guard Staff = Yavin Ceremonial Guard (and if that formula sounds too easy don’t forget a newly sculpted visor and some great paintwork courtesy of the customizer too!).

potf8_zpsdad4f0af.jpg

Imperial Dignitary (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £60
Labria: More Cantina aliens are always welcome, and this devil horned character is suitably exotic. I’m not sure whether Kenner would have kept using vinyl capes into the Power Of The Force line but it certainly suits this guy and he looks very authentic alongside Walrus Man, Snaggletooth and the rest.

potf9_zps05d41de3.jpg

Romba (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £50
Bith Cantina Band: The Cantina Band… you see this guy and just have to start humming that tune. I know the Cantina Band sort of already existed as a drawing on the backdrop of the Cantina Playset but he would have been a good choice for Kenner to release as an army builder figure.

potf10_zps1e5c1679.jpg

Han Solo In Carbonite Chamber (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £70
Bo Shek: Bo Shek only appears briefly in Star Wars but the way he’s chatting to Chewbacca in the Cantina you sense this guy is a bit of a ‘player’ on the smuggling scene. I think this is a great custom and the space helmet actually fits too. Bo Shek has the look of a cowboy about him so I’ve accessorized him with a silver long barreled blaster, rather like a Colt 45.

potf11_zps3a7c17e5.jpg

Luke Skywalker In Battle Poncho (+ Coin / 3 Nubs On Belt) C9.5 1985 no COO £95
Uncle Owen: Had Kenner created an Uncle Owen for the vintage line he might have contested the prize for ‘most boring’ action figure ever made – unless they made him like this. This is a really great custom and just look at the voluminous cloak, when you’ve got a cloak as cool as that you really don’t need any other accessories. Now back to work Luke. You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done…

potf12_zps60ffd713.jpg

Paploo (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £50
Aunt Beru: This Aunt Beru is again just a superbly modeled figure, crafted from scratch by the customizer rather than using parts from other figures. With all these custom figures I have been looking for ones that ‘feel’ authentic to the vintage Kenner line and I’m sure you’ll agree that this one would have fitted right in. What accessory would Aunt Beru come with? Only one choice really – anyone for a glass of blue milk?

potf13_zps10377357.jpg

Lumat (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £65
Treadwell Droid: The Treadwell Droid here is a bit of a cheat as rather than being a custom it was released as an accessory for the modern line in the 90s, so although it’s technically not a modern ‘figure’ it kinda is. Still I just really like droids and if Kenner were to have released another vintage droid action figure then the Treadwell Droid would have been a great choice. This one has a nice simplicity and certainly still has the look of a vintage piece, maybe Kenner could have gone all out and released a ‘Tatooine Homestead Playset’ as part of the POTF line.

potf14_zpsf039f354.jpg

Barada (+ Coin) C9.5 1984 no COO £55
Long Snoot: This Long Snoot figure is a beautiful custom, no head swaps here - the head of this ‘Imperial Spy’ has been sculpted from scratch. Kenner’s publicity shots showed black capes for Squid Head and Luke Jedi but we never actually had a black cape in the vintage line – until now! Like Tarkin this figure comes with a black comm link to snitch to the Imperials with.

potf15_zpsb7b1ba3a.jpg

R2-D2 Pop-Up Lightsaber (+ Coin) C9.5 no COO £220
Luke Skywalker (Dagobah Outfit): I’m sure Luke spends as much time in Empire Strikes Back dressed in this ‘Dagobah Outfit’ as he does the Hoth Outfit or Bespin Fatigues, so this figure would have been a welcome addition to the Power Of The Force line. This is definitely one of my favourite customs and I particularly like the accessory here of the ‘levitating’ balance rock. Would have been a great figure to add to the Dagobah Playset.

potf22_zps46c0306b.jpg

EV-9D9 (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £105
Wuher: We had three, count them, three different vintage Cantina playsets and still no barman?! Well here is Wuher in all his glory. With Star Wars figures being clearly split between goodies and baddies I think it would have been nice for kids to have a neutral, civilian type character to interact with. He comes accessorized with a drink pump to dispense liquor to his patrons (I guess one thing that unites all alien species across the galaxy is their love of booze). Wonder if Wuher would have been brave enough to say “no droids” to the towering EV-9D9?

potf21_zpsec5cbbfe.jpg

Yak Face (+ Coin) C9.5 1985 no COO £630
Sandtrooper: There was a debate a while back on this forum about which Star Wars figure is most common, and the consensus seemed to be the Stormtrooper. I hope I can be forgiven then for commissioning SithCustoms to rearrange one of the multitudes to create this custom Sandtrooper. I think they did a really seamless job and it looks like a professionally released figure. Most of these customs are what I would call ‘wish list’ figures however I think we can all agree that the Sandtrooper is one that Kenner really ought to have made to accompany the Dewback.

One final custom... I had hoped that Ryan (Bantha5) may contribute one of his incredible Gargan or Slave Leia customs to the limelight and sometimes hopes come to fruition. By Royal appointment I am proud to present...

POTF17_zpsb7ce200d.jpg
Princess Leia (Jabba’s Slave Outfit): I really think the photo above speaks for itself. The quality here is truly outstanding, and I am sure it won’t be disparaging to the other customizers whose work is on show to say that this piece is the crown jewel of my collection. A fully articulated figure, and one which would have gone perfectly with the Jabba Playset (the playset even included the neck manacle to fit the figure). So I have corrected that omission and now the Power Of The Force line comes with a ‘reissued’ Jabba Playset complete with exclusive baggie figure. Needless to say, if Kenner had actually produced this in limited numbers at the tail end of the POTF line then collectors would be falling over themselves to acquire this set and get the Slave Leia figure. Thanks to Ryan’s immaculate craftsmanship and understanding of vintage sculpting and design we can at least get an idea of how that figure might have looked. Bravo sir!

BONSAI'S BIG COLLECTION... Of Vehicles And Playsets!
If you thought this thread was pic-heavy before then I better apologise as it’s about to become a real bandwith beast. Having completed the figure run my ambition is to add a complete collection of vehicles and playsets to the limelight, along with key foreign variants too!

I don’t collect MISB (mint in sealed box) because I’m too curious - I like to see what’s in there and also to know that it hasn’t degraded – but my aim is to have the contents as close to complete as is possible (if anyone spots any contents I have missed please do let me know via pm). It’s actually surprisingly hard to find a thorough source of box ‘contents’ info online but I have to give thanks to the following sites which I have found useful: POTB: PROJECT OUTSIDE THE BOX - Your One Stop Place for Star Wars Vehicles, Playsets, Rigs, Creatures etc. / http://forum.rebelscum.com/t1021174/ / Action Figure Toys

It is possible to buy reproduction instructions, inserts and stickers to complete items but I have no interest in that. The only non-vintage you will see in the limelight are the mylar envelopes that I like to keep paperwork in to aid long-term preservation.

Once again I have included ballpark valuations next to the items, although in the case of boxed vintage there are way more variables than with loose figures – and the value can change dramatically based on condition and completeness. It’s also true that when it comes to selling via auction that prices can wildly fluctuate, both up and down, and there is no ‘set value’ on any vintage item.

I am attempting to limelight the items in chronological order of release, so we begin with the Early Bird items before moving on to the first wave of Star Wars toys and the good old Land Speeder… I hope you enjoy!

Bagged Contents: Yes
Electronics: Working
Notes: Kenner released a number of other ‘toys’ outside the action figure line, including this inflatable torch saber. This Mallory variant includes printed text on the saber. Mallory were a battery maker, and renamed Duracell in 1978. It is unknown whether this Saber was the result of an official tie-in between Mallory and Lucasfilm, however a Kenner source has speculated that it is more likely to have been an unofficial ‘bootleg’ product as they feel doubtful that Lucasfilm would have approved printing on the blade. The high valuation is based on only one other Mallory saber being known of at this time.
Valuation: £1800

STAR WARS - WAVE TWOThe 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] wave of vehicles and playsets in the original Star Wars line followed along in 1979, and was even more ambitious than the first. Kenner created such classics as the Radio Controlled Sand Crawler, the Imperial Troop Transporter (a vehicle never even seen in the film) and the impressively scaled Millennium Falcon. Kenner also added three new playsets to the vintage line and Palitoy - as they had done with the Death Star - once again reinterpreted them with variant versions of their own. This 2nd wave are definitely amongst the coolest vehicles and playsets in the whole vintage line.

Boba Fett was a mail-away offer in the US (in return for 4 proof of purchase stamps) although the offer printed on cardbacks famously pictured “a rocket firing backpack”. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - WAVE ONE It is well documented that Kenner were unprepared when Star Wars hit movies theatres in 1977, however when The Empire Strikes Back premiered in 1980 the company ensured they had toys ready to fill the shop shelves. The first wave included the rather clunky looking Star Destroyer (which was described as a playset, presumably because if kids tried to fly it around all the figures fell out!) and the Imperial Attack Base (which is curiously shown as being populated by Imperials on the box even though it clearly resembles the Rebels Hoth Base). Also released was the Special Action Display Stand - albeit in very limited numbers - and I feel very fortunate that I am able to share this grail piece with you, so let us start with that...

Sticker Sheet: No

The rarity of this item led to some early speculation that it was a prototype but examples have since surfaced with store price stickers on them and it is now considered as perhaps the rarest item released by Kenner for the vintage line. The box flap has had restoration which contributes to the low valuation on this example.

THE RETURN OF THE JEDI - WAVE ONE 1983’s Return Of The Jedi saw Kenner in full flow and producing very large quantities – not just of the toys associated with the new movie but reissuing a good number of SW and ESB toys in ROTJ branded packaging too. Highlights of the first wave include the Speeder Bike with ‘exploding’ button and the Jabba playset (with many collectors opting to include both Jabba and Salacious Crumb in their figure sets too). However we begin the wave in 1982 with the early release of the Admiral Ackbar mail away figure…

THE RETURN OF THE JEDI - WAVE TWO By 1984 the Star Wars trilogy may have concluded but the vintage toy line was still going strong. Kenner certainly produced and sold large quantities of the smaller toys in this second wave of Return Of The Jedi (including the Ewok Combat Glider and Catapult) as evidenced by how plentiful and relatively low cost they are for collectors today. The wonderfully robust Rancor (have you ever seen a broken one?) also proved popular as did an opportunity to purchase the Rebo Band figure set. The flagship release for this wave however has to be the Imperial Shuttle, although its sheer size particularly when boxed makes it a daunting piece for collectors to display…

“The Force” Lightsaber
Box: Kenner US 1984 (originally 1980)
Notes: “The Force” Lightsaber first appeared in 1980 as a replacement for Kenner’s earlier inflatable lightsaber. It came with an Empire Strikes Back sticker on the hilt and in a choice of red or yellow blades. In 1983 the hilt sticker was changed to reflect Return Of The Jedi branding and the yellow blade was replaced with a green. In 1984 the version seen here was released, this iteration includes a rarely seen cardboard hanger.
Valuation: £300

Collector’s Special Offer Pack
Box: Tri-Logo Europe 1984
Notes: Commonly known as an ‘Italian 4 Pack’ (although a German language version also exists) this set includes a Return Of The Jedi branded sleeve which holds four carded figures. Several different figure combinations have been verified, but the set remains susceptible to ‘figure swaps’. The grading and the fact that the starburst pricing logo is blank (they are typically found written on with pen) contribute to the high valuation on this example.
Valuation: £1600

POWER OF THE FORCE / DROIDS
Seeing the Power Of
The Force branding on Star Wars toys is bittersweet as it represents the end of the vintage line. With no promise of further movies and with toy shelves being cleared to make space for the likes of Transformers and He Man: Masters Of The Universe, it seemed clear that Star Wars had run its course (strikingly evidenced by the Young Jedi Knight Kit and the Woolworths Special Buy 8 Pack). Conversely the low sales of the past means the opposite today, and the Power Of The Force toys are amongst the rarest and most sought after by vintage collectors. The line also does include some impressive items, in particular the Tatooine Skiff and the A-Wing, and the chance to buy a themed bundle of toys in the European exclusive ‘Playpacks’.

Notes: The Star Wars toy line began with the mailaway Early Bird Kit and it was the mailaway Young Jedi Knight Kit that appeared to signal the end. It included a coupon that could be returned to redeem another free figure. This envelope is sealed but extra contents are shown as an illustration.

Instructions: Yes
Bagged Contents: Yes
Notes: One of three ‘Playpacks’, exclusive to Europe, containing a group of previously released toys. Includes a Speeder Bike along with two Biker Scouts, Leia Endor, and Wicket. Worth noting that playpacks appear to have surfaced with different combinations of internal packaging (folded carded figures, baggie items and non-baggie items).

Droids Battery Operated Lightsaber
Box: Kenner US 1985
Inserts: Yes
Paperwork: We Really Do Care Flyer / Parents Safety Sticker
Electronics: Working
Notes: Kenner’s third lightsaber. It was released in both red and green, it lights up with batteries and has a spring loaded ‘pop out’ mechanism for the blade (although it remains oddly short – scaled more like a knife than a saber).
Valuation: £300

Woolworths Special Buy 8 Pack
Box: Baggie Palitoy UK 1986
Notes: Eight figures (typically loose but sometimes in baggies) sold for just 99p. This ‘fire sale’ offer by the UK chain Woolworths is a powerful indicator that by 1986 the Star Wars toy line had reached the end of the road in retail terms. The bag on this example is unsealed which contributes to the low valuation.
Valuation: £140

This limelight will continue with a showcase of some of Kenner's Unproduced Toys... It’s been a fair bit of work taking the photos and writing the descriptions but I hope you enjoyed it. I have certainly enjoyed sharing my collection with Rebel Scum and the wider world and if you liked what you see then please leave a comment!

Your humble servant,

Bonsai_Tree_Ent

ps. Okay then - one more pic. ROLL THE MOVIE!

Hahahaha...the first pictures are the best. I wanna "swim" and "dive" in these too. Man that looks so awesome!!!!!

Cant wait to see the whole "creme de la creme" single shots but the messy "I have loads of everthing" pictures I love very much!!! So cool!

Cheers and best luck in hunting!

Regards

That's what I call a huge lot of vintage figures. I'm sure you will find many small variations, if you take the time to go throuh all those figures.

Henrik, yes indeed. By buying big badly-photographed bulk lots of random figures on Ebay you get good value and you do also acquire (more by luck than judgement) a wide variety of COO's and variations. All sorts - even some Lili Ledy figures seem to have found their way across the pond from Mexico to wind up as anonymous figures within UK job lots! Aside from maybe a handful of the hardest to find figures (Ledy Jawa, Burgundy Cape Bib Fortuna, etc) all the figures you're going to see in this limelight have come this way.

Return of the jedi figures added...

vintagetrucker, yes I do have prices up as the figure stats under the photos are copy/pasted from my collection list and I have a ballpark value on all the items for insurance reasons and also so that if I get hit by a Number 9 Bus tommorrow then my wife will have some inkling of what's worth what! But like any vintage price guide... it's not gospel!

Good idea, I should probably do the same just so my wife doesn't sell any of my blue snags for pennys at a flea market or something
I'm at the moment trying to ditch me blue snag 4 pack to raise funds for a mint loose toltoys jawa that a buddy of mine has saved for me.
I already have a loose mint no toe dent blue snag and a loose mint toe dent snag. I love loose variations!!!!

I have just added a little update to the figures on page one. I have been lucky enough to acquire two very special ladies... a Glasslite Leia Organa and a 'Blond' Lili Ledy Leia Bespin - both very rare and both very mint! Hope you like them.

I have also added the Rebo Band - how did I forget about them before?! They are of course proper figures not just a 'playset', and the cool thing is that they also have proper variants. Until I actually got them in my hands I didnt realise how different and how cool the Lili Ledy versions of the band were, take a look at the side by side pics on page one and leave a comment if you like them!

ps. I also upgraded the Han Small Head to a 'green' blaster and the Ledy Nikto now has the proper dark grey Ledy staff... collector OCD is a terrible thing and I seem to be suffering!

Great variation collection, you really added some figures since I last took a look. :)

A couple of pretty ladies you got there, the Glasslite Leia is awesome (as all the other Glasslite figures) and Leia Bespin is one of my favorite figures (like the turtle neck dark hair variation the most, but have the Meccano "ghost face" variation on it's way, that pretty cool too).
