Astromech Droids 6 Pack - EE Exclusive

I'll definitely be getting this set, but there is so much they got wrong. I understand the business decision of the vintage sculpt, once they decided to do the Bar2 droids, but man, I would have at least liked them to at least split the sets so we could have gotten some of the others in BAd form. How nice would it have been to be able to put the brown Disney R6 dome on the brown body in this set? I fear they went with blowing their budget on those boxes so that Adam could have some nice display features in his play room over a more attractive droid model breakdown and set split. Seriously, boxes and packaging are majorly expensive, and I bet that custom sucker ended up costing a third the cost of the entire set. Plain packaging and we get 8 droids in two sets like last time, and a second mold to go along with the vintage bartender mold.

The other paint stuff - they go to the trouble of doing a 'realistic' clone wars droid, but then do the milky gray dome instead of a standard metal R2 dome, or getting the body panels on the ROTJ bartender all wrong is just maddening. This is the information age! If you're not entirely sure what's going on there Adam, just jump on some forums and sites and ask! It's like the R3-T2 dome disaster all over again.

Mine arrived Saturday, and honestly, I'm pretty pleased. While I do like the BAD sculpt a bit better, I got a couple of Original Trilogy droids I had long been hoping for, and a couple of neat new additions. Other than the black and yellow stripes not quite matching up on QT-KT, the paint apps on mine look great. Jabba's bartender will be displayed right alongside the matching R2-D2, so an alternative sculpt would look out of place here unless the drink accessory had been redone. Probably won't be too tough to cast a plug in place of the sensorscope so the leg can be raised, though it would have been a nice addition if included. Really, my only gripe is the price tag for the four droids I was most interested in; however, if that's what it takes to get a decent set of exclusives made, I'd rather pay it than go with a 5poa successor line.

I've never been this disappointed in a 3 3/4" acquisition before. I really don't like the mold, the paint is not great, the figures feel cheap, the compartments don't stay closed, and the middle legs don't support the weight of the figure (on some). All of this is made worse by the ridiculous price. I'm going to return my set.

Well said.

If only there was a "LIKE" button on the forum...

everyone keeps saying they'd rather these be the BAD mold, but i'm not sure we'll be getting those anymore because i think disney has the tooling now. that said, i'd be very content with the G9 mold or even the VOTC mold. i've got plenty of droids from both of those molds that i'm more than happy with.

I'd like to see more of the VOTC mold with the extra arms and doors. My set is through FP in the UK and I can't wait. My son will enjoy putting them in the Jedi Starfighters.

It's interesting. I've heard this a couple of times. I don't really feel like I have a firm grasp on the business relationship between Hasbro and Disney regarding the BAD line, either before or after the Lucasfilm buyout. I suspect that there was no physical change in the location of these molds, though possibly a change in ownership rights. Just speculation, though. There has also been discussion/speculation regarding a factory change at Hasbro between 2012 and now. Anyone know anything firm about what Chinese contractors Hasbro previously or currently uses for production?

Rogue One stuff is being made in Vietnam. A few years back China brought in better workers' rights laws and minimum wages that must have hurt their bottom line.
Anthropocene age slavery? Discuss.

I think the reviews I've seen here are pretty spot on. I got my set and was really excited about the whole thing. I was pumped from the beginning that we were getting an exclusive set of droids. I would have been even more excited if it was all of D-Squad, but these are droids I've been looking for.

The flat grey paint is off-putting. It makes them look more cartoony... and the four that have the grey paint were from the Clone Wars cartoon ... but since I believe these were supposed to be realistic, they seem a bit out of place with the rest of our realistic droids. The actual paint applications are fine on my set, even though the 2 from the OT aren't really correct paint applications... and the pink is close enough but not really right either. I really wish they had taken another look at these and gotten the look closer to movie accurate, and gotten the more metal looking paint for the other four.

The doors not staying closed are an issue, but not a huge one on my set. The action features are just a part of the sculpt. Had these been perfectly opening and closing it would be great, but It's not so bad it's a deal breaker sort of thing. The pop up also isn't really an issue for me. If I want it down I'll position it so it's down. The 3rd leg could be better also as it does take some positioning to make it right.

OVERALL: I give the set a 8 out of 10
I'm glad I have the figures. Could they have been done better? Always, but as these were going to use an existing sculpt, and the bartender piece had already been created for this mold... it was really set that these were the figures we were going to get ... or nothing at all.

I deducted a point and a half for the incorrect paint apps and flat grey paint, and another half for the action feature not working perfectly (or at least not being very convenient for all poses of this droid.

Between these droids, the BAD Disney droids and the exclusives that keep coming out of Disney (R2-BOO and the Rogue One 4 pack), Astromechs are the best thing going for Star Wars action figures of late.

^ I very much agree with your review.

for those who are having issues with the door. Extend the gray arm inside, bend it u shape a little and then reset it back into the droid. The door closes perfectly.

Mine arrived yesterday and I love the set. as cool as ziros paint scheme looks I would have preferred another droid. Hopefully they make the rest of D squad and a pre D squad QT-KT

I'm sure it has been covered in the thread before, but if this were at a lower price, around $10.00 per figure, I'd consider buying it. I'll be checking Amazon, because EE exclusives usually show up on Amazon for less than EE sells them for.

Oh, they are $10 per figure. The extra $20 is for the box. :awesome:

After all, Boxes aren't free you know. Otherwise U-Haul wouldn't be selling them! lol

This is inching toward a more reasonable price, but I'm still not biting unless its around $40. I remember those droid factory sets on Amazon a few years ago were down to maybe $20 or something ridiculous, so when I don't really want all the figures, its a waiting game from now on with these cheaply produced exclusives.

As I've already bought one set, there's no price I would consider buying a second set! Perhaps if they had used the BAD sculpt, so that I could customize a few. would!
Unfortunately with the way things have been with Collecting lately, I didn't want to chance not getting it. Mainly the OT Droid, So I ordered early.

In retrospect, i should have just bout him on ebay.

Now $39.95 on Amazon. I've bitten, at this price importing from America is still a lot cheaper than buying from UK sellers.

Ordered this on Xmas Eve when the price dropped. $6.66 per figure seemed somewhat reasonable, but now that I see them in person I think it's a fantastic bargain. Really nice execution on these, so much better than the TLC BAD and especially the newer Disney BAD stuff.

How many drinks glasses should Jabba's bartender have? Mine came with 6, but there's room for 7. R2-C2 came with 7.

I can answer my own question, it's 7. The 'seventh' drinks glass made a bid for freedom when I opened the packet, but I managed to track it down, it was hiding beneath a piece of fluff on my floor.

I ordered this when it went on sale on Amazon, but thanks to Amazon and their crummy packaging it arrived completely mangled so back it goes. But as I was looking at it, there's nothing on the box that designates this as a Black Series item and the white box obviously doesn't fit in with the rest of the collection either. So what makes this a Black Series item? Or was this thread just parked in this section for lack of a better place to put it?

It's not really part of any line, since the Black series is the current line of SA figures it's here.

This is on clearance over at EE for $27. May pick one up if I can find enough stuff for free shipping.

Can't believe the price this started at, and can't imagine many will pay full price for exclusives going forward. I am only interested in two droids, so if it hits $20, i might buy one.

Yeah, I'm only interested in 1, maybe 2. So I'd probably sell the rest off. Might be more worth it to just by the one I definitely want on eBay though.

TBH, that is on them for the decisions made regarding this set. But yes, after this debacle, I will be less accepting of Exclusives and pricing than I ever was.
And it is sad because we are far from being finished. Disney should just step up and start selling theirs online!

DO NOT go with the $8 FedEx to Postal shipping!!! Mine took 11 FORKING BUSINESS DAYS to get to Kentucky from California and it saw more states than I've seen on its trip...

Sorry to resurrect this thread but what mold do the droids in this thread use? Is it a good one in comparison with other R2 molds? Been playing catch up with collecting since I got the barge and I'm thinking of just reprinting the green droid as R2 then giving him a drinks tray. Thanks.

All six use the Vintage Collection mold R2-D2 from 2010
http://www.rebelscum.com/R2-D2_ROTJ_Vintage_Collection_TVC_VC25.asp

Which is an excellent sculpt and has quite a few built-in features, but is slightly shorter than the Astromech sculpts released between 2000 and 2010

http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/galleries/2012/Review_R2D2TVC/pages/Review_R2D2TVC21.html
TVC R2-D2 on the left, Saga Jabba's Sail Barge R2-D2 (2004) on the right

The shorter scale is supposedly a bit more movie-accurate though.
I have no idea what the actual R2-D2 release goes for these days, but if you can get one for a fair price or repaint one of the 6-pack, it's among the best R2-D2 versions out there.

Whaaaaaaaa?!?!

I remember this set being on clearance for months at Entertainment Earth then vanished. Why is it back? It was awful...
