I've had several questions in regard to the shift overlaps. During the overlap those that are already on duty will stay in their positions until their replacement arrives. The incumbent then trains the replacement. Once the swap is made the incumbent can then check out for that shift or go to their next shift assignment. Yeah, it can get a little messy, but it all works out.
Also, if you're working back to backs you only get credit for one hour, not two, for the overlap. Also for back to backs, when you need a break for bathroom, eating etc. you request a floater from your floor manager and then you can break.
