3.75" Professionally Made Kenner Style Customs & Repros Discussion

To my eye, the PCF droids are a touch larger in scale than their SS counter part....?

Muftak sure looks good. And man, the look on the Rebel Ground Crew's face....he means BUSINESS!

Apart from the orange droid on the far left, are any of these from the OT?
I know the black one is 000's counterpart....

I am not sure - I am not a fan of "fantasy" figures though, so most would probably be an easy pass. I personally have no interest in the PCF droids since he hasn't released any on cards (yet).

I have I think 5 of the hand made TW prototype Astromechs that I bought on a whim. They don't really fit with what I collect and would be willing to part with them for what I paid if anyone is interested in adding some unique figs to their bootleg collections. PM me.

I believe ToyWeaver mentioned something previously about the two on the far right being R5-D2, from the Sector 2 Droidnostics portion of the queue in the original incarnation of Star Tours.

A figure of this character was made by Hasbro in 2002, but released only in the Disney Parks.

I'm doing a little digging at the moment...

Going left to right.

R5-A2 from Mos Eisley spaceport. As near as I can tell, you are right, he's the only one from the Original Trilogy.

The green one with the white stripe on his face could be R5-U8 from the Clone Wars.

Ditto for the blue one, he's possibly R5-S9.

The red one with the white dome is R5-X2, who was in Jabba's viewing box during the Podrace in Phantom Menace.

I already mentioned the two on the far right in my previous post, so that just leaves this guy.

Anyone know what he's from?

The best match I got for "stripes on dome R5" was this guy, R5-2JE from Rise of Skywalker, but the color and other details are wrong.

EDIT: M13 has correctly identified it as G8-R3 from Phantom Menace.

And just to recap them all in a single post, the rightmost pair are two incarnations of R5-D2 from the original Star Tours queue.

I feel like I've seen the White & Yellow R5 in Outlaws on Toshara... which is so addicting to play and sight see.

I wish Hasbro would make a Ywing pilot and that Mouse-bat looking alien. I'm about to do a mission in Outlaws where I help breakout one of those aliens to join my crew.

Thanks for all the pictures. It does help answer my questions about these. Do they feel like Kenner figures like the Stan Solo ones? Which type do you like better?
When I first got them, I thought they were spot on (aside from the lack of head-clicking, which honestly is only a thing if you plan to turn their heads all the time.)

When you compare them to SS/Kenner, they are a little bigger, as you can see--but if we're going on feel, I'd call them equal for the most part. Personally, I prefer SS clear domes to removable PCF ones. I like some details on PCF more than SS on a couple, and vice versa for the rest. The off-white on the SS plastic is a winner. On the other hand, I didn't know I wanted a screen-accurate R5 until I had one.

I like having them all -- I think my opinion is subjective enough to be limited to me. If you're on a budget, I don't see a need to replace any SS figures, but otherwise, I'd say these add a quality look to any display. Recommended.

Good call! I am so chagrined I didn't recognize him. I even have the Hasbro figure of that one, and opened it in the last five years to post it in a Facebook album.

I even took pics of the packaging when I did so.

Still, his name beginning with G8 explains why he didn't turn up in my searches that specified R5.

I'm going to edit my previous post to include this new info.

Perfect. Just the the review I was looking for. I don’t mind them being a little bigger or different. Just that they look like something Kenner “would”have done. Thank you so much for all the info!

For anyone not keeping score of our embarrassment of riches regarding professionally made astromech droids, here's what I have for SS and PCF so far:

Excellent checklists, thank you!

Apparently on the "S.S.tromechs", I only missed a few. The only Artoo I got was the Droids one, though I did get the bar dispenser by itself to put on a real Kenner Artoo. I also had no excitement about the Boba deco astromech, and for some reason let one of the two Hoth R3s get away.

SS astromech checklist by M13 on RS forums annotated.jpg SS astromech group shot March 2025.jpg

Not sure if you want to make any revisions, but the R3-M3 figure has been produced twice by SS at two different factories, with subtle changes.

And while we're on the topic of revisions...

Excellent collection!

These are screenshots from my full checklist and I do note the two different R3 units there. I have them both on card but only one loose. When the Boba droid popped on the stan solo website, I couldn’t pass it up, but it is an oddball for me since it’s not in any Star Wars material— I do prefer droids that have appeared in the movies or shows.

Thank you for spotting the typo in the new stuff. I appreciate it!

I really wish Stan Solo would reissue a few of the old astromech droids. I missed a few somehow thinking I had them. Not until I moved my collection did I notice I am missing one R2 unit I would swear I had!

A solid dome R2-Q5 would sell well IMO. I'd say some who already have the pop-up lightsaber ver would likely pick up a solid-dome re-issue.

I'm not on the face page so I don't know how active Stan Solo is; last activity I saw was when he came out with the Jabba's dancer pre-order. I hope he's working on some new projects! They are always 100% winners in my book.

I'm thinking something may be up with him. It's very odd that the carded Tonnika's haven't been added to the US sites yet even though they have been available for months. Also odd is that there haven't been any more Astromech's announced or released given they went to the expense of retooling it after the loss of the original molds. One would think with the mold in hand, they would be able to put out any number of variations quickly. Finally, he's been very quiet. He would normally come on here and start trouble every few months but I haven't seen anything here from him in a long time.

Along those same lines...

Now that they've got the sculpts/molds, I'd like to see ToyWeaver/PCF do this pair of Imperial R5s from ROTJ.

imperialR5sbig.jpg

Notice that the one on the right, which I believe is the one Hasbro and SS released as R5-J2, actually has the two-eyed configuration like the R5-D2 figure from the Star Tours queue.

An all-black version of that TW/PCF sculpt would pair well with the SS R5-J2, but a black three-eyed R5 in the deco of the one on the left would be welcome as well.

Alex

Right, like I said, the carded ones were never added and they have been out for months.

That is very odd indeed. I know there was a time where he seemed done with things, I think this was back when the Dagobah Luke was coming out. But then he announced the Jabba's dancers so I have no idea...

Decided to add R3-Y2 to my PCF order. I convinced myself that the colour scheme difference with the SS version was enough to consider this a different droid for my Kenner displays 🤪

Here are some comparison pics ...

Thank you for providing these comparison pics! Such a handy reference and an aid to decision-making on the duplicated characters.

I'm stealing it for my archives and annotating it. Am I correct in the origin of each item?

Alex

Looks like neither seller is 100% correct with some details on one and not the other and vise-versa.

I know there was a comment from Gary that some things were done on theirs intentionally to avoid being cast as copying the SS releases.

The PCF droids appear to be more in common with the Droid Factory R2-D2, particularly the legs.
The Stan Solo droids just have that touch of magic that screams circa 1978-85!

Can you take comparison shots of R3-Y2? 😁
I enjoy taking these shots. While taking these pics, I noticed that the PCF R5 is about the same size as the original, while SS's is smaller. You'll see the original R2 is also relatively close in size to the original. A couple of folks mentioned the *magic* of SS's work, and I agree; however, these PCF droids don't have any less Kenner feeling. Again, recommended.

Awesome, awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to take these beautiful photos!
Even though I own a bevy of SS droids, I've not once considered measuring them up against any Kenner originals (R2-D2 and R5-D4).
So it came as a real surprise to see the size comparison with R5-D4.

Thanks for all the pics! Really helps showing how both types look next to classic Kenner. They all look really nice! Definitely see the legs on the PFC ones are longer but it doesn’t ruin the overall feel in a collection for me
