Thread: Lanyard

    Lanyard

I only found out on Friday what a lanyard was. Why is it called a lanyard?

    Re: Lanyard

A lanyard is a short piece of rope on a ship, and in the days of sail the crew used to keep a couple of feet of rope looped around their neck in case they needed to make some kind of emergency repair to the rigging. Eventually this rope became to symbolise professional sailors and in many countrues it was adopted/incorporated into naval unifroms.

The type of lanyard we see nowadays has evolved from this old sailing practise.

Go on, ask me another. I love etymology.

LOL I was going to ask the same thing, so I looked it up on google instead.

Very interesting though I have to admit.

Better a cunning linguist than a cupid stunt.

It is the study of the origin of words.

And I spotted one of the orange lanyards and Hasbro coins go for £90 on Ebay!! I couldn't beleive it!! I could never sell my Hyperspace or my Celebration Europe lanyards

    Re: Lanyard

Yeah, I even saw a Hasbro coin go for £5.50, and they where free at the show.

Even some of the passes that hung on the Lanyard are going for crazy money. There's was a VIP one going for about £60.00+

Plus a Hasbro poster for just over £5.00

A mate of mine actually contacted the seller about that, apparantly the winning bidder placed an incorrect bid or something so he was gonna give them a lower price. Surprised me at first too!
