Thread: Model paint question

    Model paint question

Not sure if I am in the right place but I am planning to get into model building once again and need help on getting a paint set. Should I go with Testors enamel or do acrylics work?

    Thanks, Rock

Are Testors enamels used because they have a shine to them? I always used them as a kid to paint my models. They smell terrible and I just never really liked them. Do acrylics stick well to plastic? I feel that they would scratch or flake off?

enamels can damage plastic over time. At least the types of plastic used on action figures.

When using any any type of paint it’s always a good ideas to use a clear coating to protect the model.

there are a few good tutorials on painting action figures. Use light thin coats for better coverage.

I use a wide variety of paints. Acrylics, oils and enamels. I always prime my model kits and then paint. Once the base colors are done I'll do a clear coat. Then decals if I am using them. Then another quick clear coat to protect them. Then the weathering will begin. Clear coat to protect it all.

My clear coats are really light dustings and very thin layers so I don't build up too much paint.

I have used Tamiya primers on resin models, but I’ve switched to Stynylrez.

I’m curious to see samples of your work.
