Thread: Bandai: Star Wars Model Kits

  1. #11
Here are some of my builds.

    Luke's X-Wing Fighter
    Darth Vader's Tie Fighter
    SnowSpeeder

    -Painted parts
    -Detailed panel lines
    -Painted figures
    -Weathered

Next build will be the Tie Fighter (not the First Order), Slave 1 and the AT-ST. I hope Bandai would come up with the original trilogy Millennium Falcon.

^this is seriously awesome stuff and what I hoped people would post cause I have none of the vehicles. Excellent work. I had no idea the X-Wing came with mini Astromechs and pilots.

Can I ask did you use the included stickers or is that all custom painted? And also, the weathering, can you comment on how you achieved that smokey exhaust fumes effect on the Tie Advanced and the proton torpedo target exhaust port. It is very well done.

Edit: one last question. Can you tell me your thoughts on the mini X-Wing. Are you satisfied with the level of detailing and quality at this small scale.

The weathering is done by airbrush painting. I have used the decals supplied on the models. But some parts are painted because the stickers just don't lay well. Orange and dark grey accents on the snowspeeder are paint. Dark grey accents on the X-wing & tie fighter is also paint. All by airbrush. Panel lines are done with hand brush "000" (triple zero point).

Each X-Wing came with 2 pilots. One in sitting position for the cockpit and a standing one. It also came with 2 astromech droid. Can be built as two R2 units or one R2 and one R5. The SNowspeeder came with two pilots only. No extras. Tie fighter came with two Darth Vader figures. One sitting and one standing.

The mini X-wing is very nice for its details and price. Much better in terms of detail and function compared to its diecast metal counterparts from Hasbro and Hotwheels in my opinion. The wing also moves. It would be bettter to do a little of paint detailing and weathering during build though.

WOW! Looks great! And one question, after applying water slide decals is there something I should apply so they will not fad or fall off?

Great thread idea Barf. Your 3P0 looks outstanding. I have that kit lying on the floor in the dinning room for the past week - opened the box late one night and said to myself "I'll need to set some time aside to do this right".

Nicadraus your pictures are amazing. Great actions shots, i love that stuff! Any thoughts of doing LED lights?

You can top it with clear coat in matte finish. First, step is misting. Do not do the actual painting because the thinner based paint will cook or warp the decals. Mist it with 2-3 coats at a proper distance if using a spray can or set the airbrush to mist spary. Once misting is done, you can proceed with the proper painting of the clear coat.

Actually, I've considered putting LED lights. I'm just too lazy now to do it. Maybe sometime... Hahaha!

    Bandai 1/12 Captain Phasma

I was really looking forward to this kit and it did not disappoint. This set can be summed up in one word, gorgeous!

    Unboxing

    Here are the box contents....

This was also the first time I have actually preferred using a sticker over the decal. Bandai actually included a silver foil sticker for one of her pouches. I thought that was a great touch.

    The Build

This set is very similar to the FO Stormtrooper kit. The parts of the racks were logically placed and the cut points were not problematic. I didn’t find any of the parts fragile. It’s a good, solid build. Just seeing all that chrome reminded me of the C-3P0 kit and how beautifully shiny it was.

    Some in progress pics…

For the first time, Bandai included two options for a cape, a plastic one and a cloth one. I still have nightmares about the plastic Vader cape. But this cape is much better. Sure it limits articulation but it actually looks damn good.

The cloth cape is a felt type material. Yes, it's a bit stiff but at least they included an alternative. I actually like it better than the plastic cape. However, I did really like how they designed the front part of the plastic cape with the ribbon to simply rotate out of the way to make room for her arm to raise. I'll be making a custom cape of my own for sure now that I have a pattern to work with. I have to say the ribbon stickers are really high quality and have a fabric feel to them.

    Paint

Hardly any paint is required for this set. Even less then the 3P0 kit. However, the blaster was incorrectly (in my mind) cast in silver chrome and that just won’t fly in my Star Wars universe. Phasma’s blaster has a slight gold tint to it so I had to try and replicate it. I used my TFA Visual Dictionary as a reference for the paint job.

    Colour Palette (Tamiya Acrylic Paints)

All I did was add a few drops of X-20A Acrylic Thinner to some X-31 Titanium Gold. Applied the mixture to the entire blaster twice with thin coats and then added the black and red detailing. Pretty happy with it cause I was able to maintain the shininess factor.
