Thread: repainting the Target RANCOR

    repainting the Target RANCOR

Taking inspiration from this masterful Rancor model kit thread, I bought a Rancor on clearance at Target, luckily before they stopped accepting the coupons.

You actually CAN take the harness off without damaging either it or the Rancor...

I first tried to strip the factory paint off of the critter with a Q-tip dipped in Goof-Off. But this left factory paint down in the crevices, and I realized that in the end it would be much faster and more uniform to just completely paint over the existing paint job.

So far he's gotten a first coat of primer...

More to come, so stay tuned!

    Looks good so far Alex.

I'm sure you've already seen this before as it was a Customizer Spotlight at Yakface about a month ago, but just in case here's the one that aequitas whill did... CLICKY

Yep, you really nailed the primer.

Are you going for a Felucia repaint or are you trying a Jabba's palace Rancor? I thought about making Jabba's palace myself, but the hand doesn't reach the mouth. I'm hoping Hasbro makes a new arm for the one they release down the road.

This will be the one in Jabba's Palace. Not sure what to use for the manacle yet.

The arm not reaching the mouth is a minor concern for me. He's much more menacing with his knuckle-walking simian appearance.

No, Chewie, I hadn't seen that project, thanks for the link. I'm amazed by his decision to use metallic paints for that.

I gave the Rancor a blackwash...

Then I drybrushed white over that...

A layer of medium brown went over that...

And here are some photos of the current, but not yet final, stages. This is after a drybrushed layer of lighter golden brown for highlights, a layer of darker brown for dirt and shadows, etc.

Detail of the feet... the toenails are not final.

So far everything's been applied with some really large brushes. I'll do the finer detail work soon, I'm just too bleary-eyed to go on with it at the moment.

Just a suggestion Alex, but how about you add glowing eyes to this Rancor.
In the movie his eyes appear to glow as he walks through the archway, out of the shadows.
Using small yellow LEDs or reflective decorative stones might have the same effect.
Just a suggestion which would make this a more unique custom.

Oh this is coming along great, Alex. Classic approach to painting the beast, that's for sure. Works every time.

I don't think the Rancor has glowing eyes, just very glossy black ones.

Alex, it looks great! What brand of paint are you using (spray and brush)?
