Marlon Wayans pulls the Ripcord and floats down to GI JOE!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've said it many times before and I'll probably say it many more times before I'm sitting in the theater and lights dim as GI JOE begins rolling through the projector (or spinning on the harddrive, whatever the case may be), but ******n is this a weird project.

Marlon Wayans, who did the most amazing one-two punch of performances ever... with REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, looks to be on the project now. He'll play Ripcord, a leader of the military unit.

The trades also mention Joseph Gordon-Levitt in negotiations to join the flick... Keep in mind this is a GI JOE movie, scripted by Stuart "COLLATERAL" Beattie, helmed by Stephen Sommers (yikes) and starring Darth Maul, Mr. Eko, Sienna Miller and now Marlon Wayans and possibly Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

How bizarre.

Wasnt RIP CORD WHITE?

I'll be surprised if the project keeps him as a HALO jumper. He's probably tagged now as the leader of Battle Force 2000! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

(FROM VARIETY) Marlon Wayans has joined the cast of Paramount's upcoming G.I. Joe feature. He will play Ripcord, the leader of the military unit. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Killshot, 3rd Rock From the Sun) is also in negotiations to join the project, based on Hasbro's U.S. soldier action figure. Shooting is scheduled to start next month for an Aug. 7, 2009 release. Wayans most recently starred in Little Man and The Ladykillers and is now developing a cop action spoof for Paramount with brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans. (Variety)

I love the part about how HE will play the LEADER OF THE MILITARY UNIT.

So.....If they were going to have a SERIOUS version of this crap, who would play what?

....this is ridiculous.
The casting decisions have gone from poor, to bad to worse.
What the hell is wrong with this business. I know better actors in my community theatre than some of these duds.

And regardless of ability for a moment...What they hell is the deal with the story and drastic character changes?

And where are HAWK and DUKE and FLINT?????

Since when is Ripcord the leader of anything other than jumping out of a plane first?
He is an esoteric third string Joe from late in the series, at BEST!!!!!!!! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif

He was released in '84 not really late in the series. He didn't have much exposure in the cartoon series, but there was a pretty big story arc where he took a jet and parachuted onto Cobra island looking for his girlfriend. Zartan ambushed him and traded clothes with him while he was unconscious so he could infiltrate the PITT. Ripcord took Zartan's clothes and infiltrated the Dreadnoks.

Really? I could have sworn he was an 86'er! Hmm...
Regardless, he was a never a top tier Joe, in any respect.

Where are the upper echelon of Joe's? Where are the CO's from the original stories? Cartoon as well as Comic books!?

Ah, it's gonna be a Snake-Eyes movie anyway. Much like the X-Men movies were all about Wolverine.

Until I see the 100% official cast and character list, I'm not gonna sweat it. I mean, a few months ago there was a line in the casting announcement they were making Spock's mom Vulcan in the new ST film. Fans went ape until the next day with JJ Abrams's announcement that it was just a misquote/typo whatever. Folks see someone in the military, especially if it's a well-known star, they MUST be the leader.

We'll see...

I hope they don't have SE be able to speak!!! That would be something Hollywood would pull.

So, Ripcord is going to be Duke's best friend who gets into a little bit of trouble with his wisecracks and Duke is always there to get him out of trouble.....(I just read that on an interview with one of the producers)

This movie is going to suck. GI Joe is not even a Real American Hero! I bet Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow look nothing like what we know them as.

Not really, Joe is more simple to change rather than Transformers. The writers/producers made their justifications on the changes for TF which to me made sense.

It's simple to change anything...the question is...why do it? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif

....and on a personal note, I am sick and tired of these girls...or women who look like they're sixteen playing 'Women'. I wish we could see a more mature looking woman playing Baroness and Scarlett! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I can understand the changes done to TF in order to satify a dedicated fan-base and mass audience. If the changes for Joe goes beyond that because of political outcry, then IMO the project isn't worth doing. Now with Wayans onboard performing a seemingly secondary Joe character, why don't they just bring on Tom Cruise to play Slipstream that was rumored at one point. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Maybe they're trying to be like the old Marvel Comics where they'd randomly paint characters different colors.

I can remember at least a few incidents where the Marvel inker made Stalker a white guy. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I never understood such drastic re-envisioning of characters that already firmly exist.

Why not just make Snake-Eyes talk and have Cobra Commander not wear a mask and have Hawk be a woman. Who cares at this point?
This entire thing just keeps going from bad to worse.

Maybe they'll make Stalker or Doc white. JK. But I don't understand why they are changing the characters' ethnic backgrounds (or at least Ripcord's) when there were a lot more black characters they could have had Wayans play. For Breaker I can kind of see why they changed his race (since there weren't any middle eastern Joes). But then why not just create a new characters instead of changing an older character's whole identity. It's not like new fans (or the casual audience member) would even know who Breaker is. Decisions like these only hurt the movie's credibility with the fans (of course the mainstream moviegoer who sees this won't care, but aren't movies like this made since they have that fan-base?). I work in the film industry and it's a very wildly shared feeling amongst other people in film and TV that most producers and studio bigwigs are really inept when they handle projects such as the GI Joe movie.

SirTristram

Exactly....Why change an established character. Just create a new one (if you must)....Like Image did with Snake-Eyes apprentice: Kamakura

Regardless of the racial scorecard Hollywood is trying to keep with this movie, I personally wish they had left Breaker alone. He was the first Joe action figure I had as a kid. And more than that, it is a matter of personal pride as a Tennessean, since his file card listed him from Gatlinburg, TN.

For crying out frickin' loud Hollywood. Quit changing things to suit your bottom line. You pissed me off with Transformers, and you're getting there with G.I. Joe!

I agree with you JediJunkie. As I said earlier, why would they change an already established character? Why couldn't they just create a new character? The Joe movie continues on its way towards becoming a steaming pile.

I've been watching the old [censored] series on YouTube. The logo says GI Joe, A Real American Hero, but the song says International Hero and Cobra is only mentioned as a "terrorist organization". So far, I am really not excited about this movie. To quote Syndrome from Incredibles (my 3 yr old got for Festivus) "Lame, lame, lame lame LAME!"

Yeah, the more people they cast, the more this is looking like a cheesy-[censored] action movie; full of washed-up actors and imminent horror.

They were talking about how this would have a Mission Imppossible 1, or Bourne Identity feel, but at this point I am not seeing it... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

It seems very odd and random that they would take a second tier Joe and change his race for no reason other than to cast Marlon. I agree with those who said they ought have simply created a new character. Granted, I don't think Marlon is the first choice I'd have to play any of the existing black Joes either, with the possible exception of Link Talbot.

I haven't seen Requiem for a Dream so I can't comment on his acting, but I do know him as a comedian first, which IMO makes this a bad casting choice. Time will tell.

I will say he was good in Requiem For a Dream. But his role was a somewhat weasel-like junkie that had no self esteem or aspirations to live. I don't see him being able to play a role as a go get 'em tough soldier in the military. He might be a good actor, but this wasn't the role for him.

I said the same exact thing at the end of October in the first JOE movie thread.

STOP F-ing up my youth HASBRO. Wasn't screwing up Transformers enough? Michael Bay even went to HASBRO's Transformers "school" where he had insight into every aspect of TF there is, and he came out with the pile of crap that is the TF movie.
