I only found out on Friday what a lanyard was. Why is it called a lanyard?

A lanyard is a short piece of rope on a ship, and in the days of sail the crew used to keep a couple of feet of rope looped around their neck in case they needed to make some kind of emergency repair to the rigging. Eventually this rope became to symbolise professional sailors and in many countrues it was adopted/incorporated into naval unifroms.

The type of lanyard we see nowadays has evolved from this old sailing practise.

Go on, ask me another. I love etymology.

Jeremy, I didn't realise you were such a cunning linguist!

Go on then... what's etymology?

Better a cunning linguist than a cupid stunt.

what's etymology?

It is the study of the origin of words.

Would it not be a "yard" of rope ?

Yeah, I even saw a Hasbro coin go for 5.50, and they where free at the show. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Even some of the passes that hung on the Lanyard are going for crazy money. There's was a VIP (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Star-Wars-Europe-Celebration-rare-VIP-Yoda-Pass_W0QQitemZ150142695505QQihZ005QQcategoryZ93841 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) one going for about 60.00+

Plus a Hasbro poster for just over 5.00

A mate of mine actually contacted the seller about that, apparantly the winning bidder placed an incorrect bid or something so he was gonna give them a lower price. Surprised me at first too!

Well at least he was decent to reduce the price some people on Ebay can be buggers and try and make you pay the bidding price when it was clearly done in error (although I think something dodgy must of been going on to push the price up that high in the first place)

Jeremy

Done in error maybe, but if the winner didn't want it because he'd typed in the wrong price then it should have passed to the second highest bidder. Afterall, it was bidder #2 who pushed the price so high by trying to break bidder #1s top bid.

I know you're a really nice guy!

Good to know that there is at least one person who doesn't believe the hype.

I have an extra Hyperspace lanyard, I could trade it for a CE lanyard and one of the badges (not adult 3) or something CE stuff if anyone needs it... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I went to collect my pass on Thursday, the girl gave me a Hyperspace lanyard & I'm not even a member! I told her, as I didn't want to get myself or her into trouble & she immediately took it back. Would've made a nice souvenier.

I got a Hyperspace lanyard (for RS photographic purposes only) just by walking up and asking for one. It probably helped that I had an All Access badge to give me some authority, but I do know of one attendee who just had a normal pass when he got a Hyperspace lanyard.

Not sure if I had mentioned it else where, I was near the front of the queue on Friday (collected my Lanyard Thursday didn't get asked ID or anything although I made a point to show it them as it had been requested by the orgainisers). Just behind me was some foreign people and the one lad went and asked for the HS lanyard and came back with a handfull everyone one of them already so they didn't need any extra.
