View Full Version : How does one get the VAT back?

Do I just hold all my receipts and then show them to someone at the airport? What do I do? CE prints are going to afford me a pretty hefty return on the VAT!

Thanks for any help!

Here you go:

It says you get the necessary form from the retailer. I haven't ever heard of a retailer having these (but then I have never asked) so if I were you I would take some time to find one at the airport when you arrive in the UK.

I just checked with CE and they won't have the forms, but according to CE you can pick them up at the airport.

However all the searching I have done indicates that the retailer must provide the VAT form to you, and that comes fromt he HM Customs & Excise website (http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&propertyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_000159).

I may be wrong, but I beleive all you would need from the retailer would be their VAT number. This should be printed on any receipts given.

Thank you, guys! I never have gotten any VAT back, but with some of the pieces being so expensive, I thought it would be worth it this time!

I agree with SFBANKS all the information you need should be on the receipts.

Hi there, you can only claim the VAT back if the Seller is registered for VAT. All large sellers will be VAT registered, some smaller ones & non EU sellers will not be, the HMRC website is the best thing to look at.

So can you claim VAT on vintage items???

As you are from the UK no !!

As a number of us at the show are smaller Independant reatilers who do not turn over anough stock in a financial year we will not be VAT registered and as such you will not be able to claim the VAT back, as previously stated above

So can you claim VAT on vintage items???

If it is a person to person transaction then there shouldn't be any VAT on it, same if you were dealing with a small business under the VAT threshold. However if you are dealing with a larger company then yes VAT is charged on Vintage as it currently doesn't fall into either the collectibles or antique market. So you can only claim it back if you have a VAT receipt and are not a UK resident, so in general no you can't claim it back.
