View Full Version : My storage/display idea - Updated Jan. 3, '08

Here are some pictures of how I store my loose figures. It works pretty good as a display too. I am just beginning this project and have a long way to go. When I'm finished, all the drawers will be put in a frame (something like a small dresser). It's in it's early stages and it's nothing fancy but it works for me! So far I have three drawers and five completed trays. Two for Episode IV, one for Episode II, one for Episode III and one for EU. The last few pictures show what goes on when nobody's looking! http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/empty_drawer.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/empty_drawer.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/empty_aotc_drawer.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/empty_aotc_drawer.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/Full_box_front_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/Full_box_front_.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/ROTS_box_empty_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/ROTS_box_empty_.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/ROTS_box_top_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/ROTS_box_top_.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/ROTS_box_side_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/ROTS_box_side_.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/ROTS_action_corner_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/ROTS_action_corner_.jpg) http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/thumbs/ROTS_box_action_close_.jpg (http://forum.rebelscum.com/imagepopup.php?imagename=http://forum.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/ROTS_box_action_close_.jpg)

Wow...Thats a really cool idea

That is a really good way to display and store them. I like the background on each slot.

I remember my neighbor's father made a similar case back during the vintage era. The difference was he had a sliding piece of thin wood that would close the box. So it was more like a carrying case. I like it!

Really like this design! Plan on trading it? =P

Good idea!

It looks pretty good but that's way too much prep work for me. lol

Here is an update. This is just a few of my latest boxes. As you can probably see, each box can hold two stackable trays. Then after that I just stack the boxes, and there you go! A storage and display system all in one. I made these a few months ago, and already I can see room for improvement. The glue has been a messy nusiance, but since I made these I have figured out a lot cleaner method of gluing the dividers in place. I will likely make a new box to replace the one shown as well. Now that I have the proper tools, I should be able to make one with neater edges. I am also considering staining my next box and then adding a satin finish. Maybe a lid with hinges too. We'll see. The wood in the trays will probably always remain unstained though because I'm worried that it would discolor the plastic in the figures. Anyway, things are coming along!

Very cool boxes, Hockey_History! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

quite a nice idea! What kind of references do you use and where did you get them?
I'm looking for a good picture source, especially from environments (e.g. Star Destroyer bridge) to create dioramas.

Very nice idea!
It might possibly look even better if you painted to wood surface glossy black.

Wow thats actually a pretty neat idea you've come up with. Where do u get all the images from?

10-01-2007, 10:23 AM
That looks quite awesome. Nicely stored,b ut fun to display as well. Excellent work!

Thank you for the nice comments. The images can be tough to find. I pretty much just have to look all over the internet or use some screen captures from the DVD's. Some, especially in the EU box, require a lot of photoshop work. Here's an example:
In this one I just cut out the picture of Mara Jade, which was originally on a blank white background, resized it and pasted it to a background. Anyone recognize this background? It is actually from some of the Force Unleashed concept art.
I am nearly finished a web site that would have all of these pictures on it (there are tons of them!) It's about ready to go except for one thing: the cost! I wish I could spare the cash, but having a family of five, it always seems like money could go to a better use. Hopefully someday!

That has to be one of the most clever and nicely done custom display pieces I've ever seen. Great job.

That is a REALLY good idea. Nice job. It would be great to have this giant chest with drawers like that that you could just stick your figures in.

That's some amazing custom work. It's practical, safe and with the artwork as backers it makes for a great display. I'm quite envious!

VERY COOL! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

VERY COOL! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll repeat that! VERY COOL!

Ugh. I think that whole display is beyond lame. . .

Beyond lame that I could NEVER make one of those for myself, that is. Very nice work. The box themselves are quite nifty, but it is the artwork that you created for each case that is seriously over the top in coolness. Kudos! Bravo!

Very nice idea.

Those look great. You have really outdone yourself with including the background shots. Very Nice. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for all the nice comments. The backgrounds are fun to make even though they take a bit of time. Here's a pic of one that I finished yesterday: http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd257/jmacole/yodaandkybuckbackground.jpg
I was also thinking of printing out the backgrounds on photo paper, so yesterday I got some copies made and they turned out really nice. They are slightly too large to use in my boxes, so I need to scale them down a little. They have such a sharp, glossy picture that that they are nice to have even as collectible cards or bookmarks. Here they are: (they look better in person) http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd257/jmacole/IMG_1295.jpg
I took some pictures of everything I have made so far. Only four more of the figure trays to go and then I'm finished with those. Then I will need to make more of the boxes to put them in. http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd257/jmacole/IMG_1297.jpg
Looks like a mess doesn't it? I'm just spreading everything out so you can see everything. But once the trays are all in boxes (each box holds two trays) it makes for a neat, orderly way to store figures.
Some day I will make all of these into drawers in a frame kind of like a dresser, but that might not be until the Star Wars line comes to an end or I stop collecting.

Awesome work! Great, original idea plus wonderful execution.

01-04-2008, 11:08 AM
that's a great looking setup. those backer images are really nice!

01-05-2008, 04:28 AM
it's bloody brilliant!

01-06-2008, 09:16 PM
You should patent it and present it to Hasbro or Lucas film...

01-10-2008, 12:10 PM
Thank you for the compliments folks. I don't know if Hasbro would ever be interested in anything to do with this concept, but it sure works for me! If anyone is interested, I might be able to make some of these for you, or just the backgrounds if anybody wants them. I don't have a firm idea on price, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Elegant and fun at the same time--great work!
