Hello everyone!

I'm mainly a prop collector, but now I'm thinking about statues (and statues only) and I would like to know the main differences between Gentle Giant, Attakus and, of course, Sideshow.

Thanks in advance

Hello everyone!

Thanks in advance

The big differences are scale and materials. The GG character stuff (that is, single characters as opposed to things like Luke w/ Tauntaun and the Rancor with keeper) is mostly in a 1/6th scale (sometimes considered a "12 inch" scale), while Attakus and Sideshow's statues are 1/4 scale.

Sideshow's line is mixed materials, meaning there's typically real cloth garments as well as metal, plastic and other materials besides the polystone base of the main figure. Attakus, by contrast, makes a more "traditional" statue where the cloth is sculpted and an integral part of the main figure.

There are some other differences, but those are the major ones. Personal taste plays a big role in what people will recommend, so please take any "so and so is the best company" type posts with a grain of salt. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Duck, welcome to these parts... good to see you getting into statues. Since you said statues specifically, I am going to assume that Gentle Giant's mini-bust line, and Sideshow's 1/6 line are out of the conversation because they aren't full blown statues. You can get a good look at the Gentle Giant and Sideshow offerings in my collection pics. Keep in mind that the following are just my opinions, and should be treated as such.

I do not have any experience with Attakus because I have never liked their look in pictures, especially humans. I have heard that they are much better in person, but I can't take that risk due to their high cost. They do have a great variety though. Some of the older ones are quite expensive due to their being long out of production. Check on their pricing as I do not want to misquote.

Sideshow's Premium Format statues are huge - 1/4 scale. They are to me, the cream of the crop. They are beautifully crafted, hightly detailed, and expertly sculpted. The fact that these have mixed fabrics, metal, and polystone amongst other materials. It just adds a great deal of realism to me. Everyone who comes by and sees these are just taken aback - they are a true centerpiece for one's collection, especially if you have a character focus. They are expensive at retail, but the regular editions can be had on eBay for quite a deal. There just aren't that many characters released just yet. I will say that I don't see a weak link in their offerings. My personal favorites are the Grievous and the up-coming Boba Fett. Retail = $300-$500, eBay for much cheaper.

Gentle Giant's statue line (which I will include the dioramas, 1/6 statues, and animated maquettes) is a great mix of quality and price when compared to the other two options. They are very detailed, and offer a variety of options depending on your style. The highlights include the Chewbacca statue, Dewback or Rancor diorama, and the Boba Fett or Asajj Ventress maquettes. The maquettes are great due to the fact that they are in a cartoonish sculpt, and there just aren't a ton of collectibles out there that capture this style. Due to the price/quality combo, Gentle Giant may be your best bet for dipping into statues. Retail = $70-$250, eBay can be cheaper on some.

Another option for you on a lower price scale are the Kotobukiya vinyl statues. This Japanese company makes a great 1/7 scale statue, but are plaqued by questionable human likenesses. Their armored offerings are top notch though. Retail = $100 for most. You can get lucky on eBay and find many in the $50 range. There are a few of these in my collection pics as well.

Again, this is just my opinion, so I would wait and see what some other people have to say as well. I hope this helps some. Good luck if you decide to jump into the fray, it is very hard to stop! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

two excellent posts.

I only collect statues and have a bunch from each manufacturer. You really can't go wrong with any of them. Attakus (and koto) get a bad rap on their human characters because they do not look exactly like the actors in the movies. I seem them as an artistic representation of the character. I want Luke - not Mark, if you know what I mean.

My favourites are the SS 1/4 figures, but a very close second would be the GG scout trooper/speederbike and dewback/sandtrooper.

Best of luck on your new collecting direction!

as stated in the previous posts all are very different from each other. of the 3 i prefer attakus. all are great though.

I have some pieces from all three and the above posts have been right on.

Attakus human faces are off, but nothing else negative can really be said by them. They were really the 1st to release high collectible statue out of the three and do tend to have a French artistice aproach to faces.

Sideshow statues are like going into a Museum exhibit on Star Wars. The only downside with them is the mixed media. It is almost a must to keep the in a display case in order to keep the dust off the cloth and those cases can cost as much as the statue.

Gentle Giant is the cheapest and smallest. You will eventually get more variety with them since they can take more chances with the price point. The Scout Trooper statue is a must with the hovering speeder bike even if you don't do Gentle Giant statues.

Guys, I'm going to buy some stuff and I would like to hear your opinion:
1.- SS General Grievous and
2.- GG Scout Trooper on Speeder bike

What do you think, nice pieces to start?; price range?

Thanks in advance

The SSC Grievous is my favorite collectible. If you can, try to get the exclusive version with the cape, it just makes for an awesome presentation. You can probably find it for something near $350 or $450 for the exclusive on eBay. Be careful and patient while taking him out of the box when you get it though, he can prove to be fragile.

The Scout Trooper statue is also very enticing. I would think you can find this for around $150. I think it will not be available easily for too much longer as it has been out for a while now.

Both are solid leads into statue collecting, and you will be amazed by their quality. Nothing bad to say here.

Just be aware of the sizes. The SS Grievous is enormous and you'll really need to set aside a lot of space. The GG Biker Scout is rather small (the trooper himself is only 6.5" tall).
Oh, and someone above said that Attakus is 1/4 scale. I don't believe that's correct as they're smaller than the SS 1/4 scale. I think Attakus is 1/5 scale.

It should be added that with reference to Gentle Giant, they scan as many props they can get access to to make a more accurate sculpt -- C-3PO is a prime example of a miniaturized character -- an almost perfect copy of the actual suit. The rest is hand sculpted. For example, though Vader was ultimately scanned, there were minor changes made to the sculpts (both busts and the statue) to make for a more dynamic or treacherous looking figure. (i.e. the hand sculpts, some armour and especially the cape.

I like all my statues (GG, SS & Koto), but the SS 1/4 always grab people's attention. It makes the collection look more like a museum. I personally have the Grevious and I love it! But like it was stated before, it is BIG!

I have some of the Sideshow 1/4 statues and I love them!! I have the Grevious and it is the center piece of my collection.People who see my collection that know nothing about Star Wars make comments about it http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif The bottom line though is that you have to like it.Collect for fun not profit. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Very well said. This is a nice hobby, not an investment. I collect this kind of stuff for fun, not profit.

That's why I don't care about numbers, value, rehash, etc

Well, it seems that I have to wait a little longer in order to get a SS Grevious. I just got a shipping quote about $350 USPS and $750 UPS... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif
As an overseas scummer, shipping cost is an issue, as you can see... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Does anyone know if there is much difference between the SS Grievous box/weight and the MR Han Solo Ep. IV Elite blaster? I have the last one and the box is huge and heavy too and the shipping cost was very reasonable.

Any help will be really appreciate http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Without having them both in front of me at the moment, I'm reasonably sure that the Grievous box is noticiably larger, and may even be heavier.

Since most all of the major MR lightsaber releases are over, I've acquired a few mini-busts and have been happy with them. Can't wait to start on the statues with the Obi-wan in Clone Armor & Slave Leia being my first ones.

Hope the paint jobs don't disappoint!

I would say 90% of the time, GG does a great job on the paint apps. The only recent misses that I can think of are the Qui-Gon and some of the ROTS Clones. I've been very pleased though with most of their stuff.

Grevious is amazing, he's on my short list of ones to get but I want the exclusive so I have to save around $500 to get what I want. I saw the standard Grevious at "Starbillas" at Downtown Disney LA about three months ago and they wanted $900 for it... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I also collected props at one time.

Get what you can display and afford. I have collected all lines and I personally feel the Sideshow PF line is the best. You just need a lot of room. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They look incredible displayed together and look very realistic.

Well, since a SSC GG is a little complicated to get, I just bought in the past:
1.- Koto Sandtrooper
2.- Koto Boba Fett
3.- GG Vader
4.- GG C3PO

They're nice, but I still need that SSC GG! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif
