Seriously...What has happend to the Fan Club.

First off - I've been a member of the Fan Club since issue #5 of Bantha Tracks. But I'm ready to not renew my subcription next time.

Received the Membership kit a few days ago. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It's a joke.
For your membership fee you get:
a poster (good), the usual welcome letter, a 2006 fan club sticker.. and that's pretty much it. Because the rest of the items are nothing more than advertisements.

You get a Code 3 advertisement coupon, official pix advertisement flyer, 4 post cards (actually advertising Hasbro), watch advertisement card, SW checks advertisement, SSW blinds advertisement, a trading card which is an advertisement for the maquettes, Magnet (which is an advertisement for the DK Complete SW visual dictionary, and another poster (which is an advertisement for Kotobukiya figures.

WHAT A RIP OFF. I remember when the Fan club use to send out a real membership kit. Their magazine use to have a great section of products for sale (Jawa Trader) which I use to eagerly flip to first - the current selection is horrible. And they use to have articles filled on the movies/cast/crew etc.. Now the issues are mostly advertisements and articles on books/comics/stories.

With how picky Lucasfilm is with their products/licensing etc, I don't see how they let their fan club go to down hill so fast and so far.

I'm through with the fan club after this membership kit. What a joke.

The changes in content to the magazine don't bother me at all--but then I'm an EU fan and I like reading up on the comics, novels, games etc.

But the Membership Kit is a joke and it's offensive that we pay a premium to receive a kit that's just made up of the same advertisements we have to endure as endless banner ads on all the websites we frequent anyway. I'm quitting the club myself--the only reason not to just buy the magazine at the newsstand (because god knows the subscription rate is no deal off the cover price) is the Hyperspace membership to get early/exclusive access to SWShop merchandise. Not worth it IMHO.

Sorry for the rant--I'm still all pumped up from the midterm elections! WOOT!!!

seriously, the membership kit is a friggan joke.

when you figure the amount of money that people paid for the ads to stuff the envelope with, we all should be getting something a bit nicer than a sticker and a crappy poster.

I stopped renewing my membership years ago.
For all that money you hardly get anything decent.
Better to spend that money on ebay/retail and buy something worthwhile.
They had asked me to renew my subscription to the SW Insider (sometime in the late 90's) and if I did, they would give me a free gift- a pen with Luke's Landspeeder on it.
I renewed, but never saw my bloody pen.
I rang them (international call) and asked them about it- they said they'd send it out but I never saw anything.
What great customer relations- should win an award or two.

I remember joining the OSWFC in 1980 and they sent out a fantastic membership kit with a theatrical poster, lobby cards, ESB Pencil set, Stickers, Patch, Card.
The ROTJ one was just as good.
The fan club of today is a mere shadow of it's former self, obviously run by people who don't really give a [censored] about Star Wars.
The Official Star Wars Fan Club should be run by fans, for the fans.

I only renew my membership during Celebration years. That is the only real perks for the membership. Otherwise is a $40 frakkin dollar magazine subscription. Over $6 an issue. Can't we do that at the newsstand?

film cells wernt bad

Well I was thinking about joining cause I buy insider at the newsstand anyway but after everything said here... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fan club has really fallen by skid row.

12-28-2006, 07:27 PM
The first year I was in (2005/2006) I got some little figure that was put in the envelope and of course bent in half in transit and few other trinkets that were inconsequential to me. Last year, more adverts and nothing really impressive IMO. However, because I'm an EU nut I'll continue to renew. It may simply be a shift of supporting the EU more than ever since that is the present and the future of the franchise.

i am glad i read this, i was thinking of this

I changed my email last year, and just recently thought about updating it. Heh, sounds simple enough huh?

Well, my ocnfirmation comes, and I "click here" to verify, and it crashes, then I try again and it gives me an error message. So now I don't know if they have my upadated email, if I'll receive updates, when my subscription is running out...etc. etcv. blah blah.

If I was actually going to CIV I'd probably be panicking and calling all over the place, but now I just go to another site like
oh I dunno http://www.pittsburghpenguins.com http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

03-03-2007, 05:47 PM
Now, I ordered a Greivous bust and it shipp without the collectors card you;re supposed to receive.

03-08-2007, 11:06 AM
The fan club isn't really a fan club any more. Ever since LFL, or whatever subsidiary or corporation it is that took it over, started running it, it became a cash cow, hence all the advertisements, the lousy incentives and the lack of bang for your buck. The Official Fan Club should be renamed The Official Stockholder Club. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

03-14-2007, 07:17 PM
my sentiments exactly....

03-16-2007, 08:47 AM
I for one who love to see the site go back to being Free. I hate the Hyperspace thing. Everytime I tried to log on they said that I was not recognized and would have to get a new password. Would get the new passwrd and it still would not work.

It's funny, Hyperspace had no problem removing the money from bank account. Hyperspace Sucks !!!!!!!! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif

03-31-2007, 11:33 PM
They're still trying to lure people into that Hyperspace rubbish:

They've lowered the price and still people won't join.
When are they going to learn- it's not about the cost IT'S WHAT WE'RE BEING OFFERED that isn't very exciting.

Online content like wallpaper and icons are great, but hardly an incentive to want to sign up to Hyperspace.
Sorry Hyperspace, that $14.95 will go towards some new Hasbro or Sideshow product- not your crappy Fan Club

Ah, remember the glory days of the Official Star Wars Fan Club?
They should scrap Hyperspace and return the fan club to its former glory.

The Insider Magazine should be part of the $14.95 subscription!

04-01-2007, 02:48 PM
I stopped being a fan club member after the Insider switched back from paizo. I remember getting the membership kit and a free issue because they wanted me to come back (my first issue was issue 30) but after flipping through the current style of the Insider I said forget it. I also did not like that they cut the issues back by half and the price hike was more. I remember when I paid 36 bucks for two years of insider!

Those were the days.

04-09-2007, 10:02 PM
Thanks for warning me guys. I'm definately not buying this.

Insider yes though

I agree it is horrible and I stopped my subscription to the fan club/Hyperspace. For Hyperspace, it's only photos mainly you miss seeing and one or two articles which are usually reported elsewhere later on anyway. Also the code you had to type in was long and cumbersome and if you didn't visit regularly, your browser doesn't plug it in for you. Too cumbersome! The cels were a joke; I collect cels and the ones enclosed were nothing of value or interest. Of course, they're not giving out presentation pieces! I do have a couple questions though.

1) What is the newstand price vs the fan club price for the magazine? (I saw the magazine recently in a bookstore and is was THIN). Is the fan club price better? Seems though even if so, 40.00 for 6 issues is expensive? I can get 4 magazine (10-12 issues per year) for that! I do now: Redbook, House and Garden, Better Homes and Garden and one other which is escapting me right now.

2) who is responsible for the magazine/fan club in relationship to Lucasfilm? Someone here said it's an outside entitiy, but Lucasfilm I am sure want content to be good and fans happy. I think Lucasfilm needs to hear the complaints. I don't think they're reading here maybe or that the outside entity will turn complaints over to Lucasfilm so readily less they be outsourced!

All I know is when I first started getting the magazine back in the 1990's, even then it was thicker and had a large variety of articles. I think it should be about the films and mostly Star Wars. If I wanted an Indiana Jones magazine, I'd get one. I don't mind they put that stuff in a LITTLE, but someone here said my thoughts too... it is turning into articles about books and games (in essence, even the excerpts and the game stories are nothing more than subliminal advertising for those items!). I would have liked to see more cast/crew interviews, background stuff on the films and characters, fan stuff.

Here we go:

This is what they're calling a "Membership Kit" in 2007.
A bunch of advertisements to buy more stuff - you know, like we don't buy enough stuff already.

L A M E !!

06-27-2007, 04:35 PM
well you get a nice pencil

07-17-2007, 01:02 AM
What's worse is that it is advertisements of crap we all already know about.

07-17-2007, 01:44 AM
I finally received my insider #94 today after a long wait. It looks like someone played hockey with it. I expected it to be polybagged or something for protection. No such luck.
I will be cancelling. I am very disappointed. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

07-17-2007, 09:31 AM
At least there is pencil this time and something that looks like a button. Its not all paper this time.

07-27-2007, 12:32 AM
