Damn, looks like it's gone.

OT Yoda, or PT Yoda?

Tig_Fromm
07-19-2006, 06:15 PM
OT, thank goodness! It's also more than a bust. It goes further down than the shoulders. Maybe closer to the waist.

That's by and far the single best incarnation of a life size Yoda (bust or otherwise) that's on the retail market. It absolutely blows away every other licensed piece made to date.

Kind of looks like Yoda is crying in the close up picture.
I gotta agree with King Kong that while it looks great it does seem a bit off

Mister_Gosh
12-13-2006, 01:00 PM
The video does indeed show it in a more flattering light. When the pics of the sample from SDCC started filtering in, it was a classic example of how different the focal lengths from zooming in with a camera can distort the details of a face. It was really hard to tell if he was correctly proportioned because the photos were distorting his eye position so badly (and it was obvious that the photos had distortions by looking at the Maul bust photos taken by the same cameras...you could see all kinds of wonky things happening to his forhead or eyes).

I saw the original puppet recently at the "Where Science Meets Imagination" exhibit. For some reason, when I see the 1:1 busts in pictures, I imagine them smaller than they actually are. I now have real sense how big a 1:1 Yoda will be and if I had any lingering doubts about this piece, they're gone.

Here, he looks like total butt: (TF 2007)

http://www.rebelscum.com/tf2007/SSCsw/IMG_5678.JPG

I've also noticed that the same piece can look like total crap in one instance, and pretty good in another, depending on lighting and perspective. Frankly, Im not that interested in a piece that I can only enjoy under the correct lighting, and can only look at it from one direction.

You can even compare pics of the same item. Take the Rebelscum SDCC photo I just posted, and compare it to the one a few posts above. Even then, he looks totally different (thus my lighting/perspective rant).

Most of the TF shots at RS (of everything, not just Yoda) have a tremendous amount of lens distortion. If you look at them, you can see how everything in the frame is warping around. Basically, it looks like they were taken fairly close and with a very short focal length, which tends to pull details in the middle of the face (or whatever) "forward"...it makes noses bigger, spreads eyes apart, etc.
If you've got a digital camera handy, you can see this effect for yourself. Point it at a face (human or on a statue), with the zoom all the way off. Take a picture so that the face fills the frame. Then put the zoom all the way on and take another picture of the same face so that it also fills the frame (meaning you have to step backwards). Then compare the two pictures.

Also, look at the background of that second Yoda photo...see how yellow and dingy the world looks? I wouldn't trust any color in that photo at all.

One thing to consider though is that the lighting in a big convention hall is rather unconventional. You've got flourescent lights 50 feet up along with neons, halogens and other sporatic light sources that all jack up how a camera interprets the image. The human eye can usually adjust, even to the horrible light conditions of an expo hall, only a camera lighting expert with expensive equipment and accesories could get a camera to do the same.

BigDumbWookiee
02-12-2007, 01:57 PM
I can certainly see that, but some of the closeups I've seen really call into question the painting quality, regardless of light quality (one picture looked like someone just flung green paint, and there were even little green blotches in the whites of his eyes). I actually think the SDCC photos look the best, and that's under big hall lighting. The studio photos on Sideshow's site, I don't particularly care for.

If this isn't sold out once it starts to ship, and it looks cool in at-home shots, I'll consider it.

Wise choice. There's something to the principle of letting the "early adopters" take the risk on an item like this. Based on the Maul and Greedo, I've got enough faith built up to go ahead and buy in. Hopefully I can set you up with pics that will help you make the call.

Yeah, but you don't get a refund for what you originally paid on shipping, and you probably dont get a refund on what you have to pay to ship it back. With an item that large, you could easily be talking $60.

Mister_Gosh

Because of the way that different focal lengths distort things, faces in particular, I'll wait until I have mine in hand. If it looks "pinched in" in person, then it'll go back, but I've seen that kind of change in facial detail just by looking at the same thing shot from two different cameras, so I'm not going to cancel based on a photo.

I still think it looks a lot like Yoda. I do feel that the one shown at SDCC and in the first pictures does look better. I'd still have bought this if what they had shown from the start was the 2nd photo. I think some of the difference could be contributed to the photo though. It looks like they used a flash, or more intense lighting in the 2nd photo, which is probably giving it a slightly altered look.

I still can't wait for this guy to get here.

Yoda #12/1000 has found a home. Luckily my mom was sick today and didn't go to work.!

I am absolutely amazed at the detail and sculpt. I'm no expert, but it looks accurate to me; it looks like Yoda. I don't know if it's the correct hue of green or not, but being a male, I only know green as green. I was scared at first because there was some white stuff stuck on his right cheek, but I was able to use my fingernail to get it off.

The hair looks good, it looks wild and crazy, like you had lived on Dagobah for 20+ years. It's very white, and can be hardly noticeable at times. The hair coming out of his ears is too thick and looks funny. The material used for the hair doesn't allow you to really mold the ear hair, so it comes out the same in both ears and just doesn't look right. Plus the sleeves are frackin' huge; the one over the knub comes down and blocks the name plate. Though you might be within rights to smack anyone over 10 who needs a nameplate to identify this guy.

Here's some pics.

Actually, that's the actual puppet used to film ESB for comparison. I took the pic at CIII.

Here's the real pics.

This one was taken with a flash.

I've been anticipating this piece since SDCC, and since I didn't take any pictures of him there, I've kinda been hyping this up in my mind since then and he didn't disappoint. I'm glad I bought him and think he was worth the money and wait.

Between this and the Biker scout it is going to hit the wallet hard. The only positive thing is that the items usually take awhile before they actually ship. I am just thankful these are the only 2 major things to worry about. Luckily GG has nothing that interests me. i just got back from las vegas. my yoda bust was waiting for me. overall i'm pleased with it. i wasnt expecting his face and hands to be rubber/foam much like my 1:1 GG yoda statue. its not an issue now but i wonder how well this will hold up years to come. i worry about drying and cracking. i also would have liked the back of the bust to have been filled out more. i dont want to sound unhappy i just have a couple of concerns.

So on 5/23 Sideshow emails me and says my waitlist reservation has been turned into an actual order. Here we are on 6/18, and this item has still yet to ship nor have I been billed for it. I don't mind the wait, what bothers me is that they so quickly changed my waitlist reservation to an order, but have stalled so long after.

It just seems a little convenient. Im on a waitlist for only a few days, a reservation I can cancel any time withouth penalty, but then they change it to an order (with Flex Pay) and stall for nearly a month. And Flex Pay orders cant be cancelled without a penalty.

There's something lifeless looking about the Yoda, but I can't tell what. He almost looks like he's dying. Maybe it's the color... The green pigment is a little too dark.

It looks great, but it's probably my least fav. choice of having a 1:1. The others are wonderful, but that Yoda one doesn't really do it for me. It's so hard to get a spot on Yoda replication.

i still like mine alot even though its not one of my favorite 1:1 busts.

that has more to do with how great the other busts in this line are.

for what its worth i like the SS 1:1 yoda bust better than my GG 1:1 statue

I wish that SSC just made the whole body and make it a lifesize maquette/statue rather than bust. It's probably the finest LS OT sculpt of Yoda. The squishy rubbery material that he is made of is kinda cool and a departure from the polystone/resin busts. Nonetheless, this is a fine line by SSC and I can't wait to see what they do next.

I still think that, and theropod would agree with me, the pepsi ROTS Yoda is the finest sculpt of PT Yoda.

Pics please? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Certainly. Mind you, these are older pictures. I don't have hardly any of the Hasbro stuff in the background anymore. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Very nice - thanks.

Here is Theropod's custom repaint of his:

The repaint looks great.

I think I like the GG pose a bit more.

I like the GG one as well especially with the light up feature. Has any one modded their ROTS or AOTC Yoda's to light up? That's something I'd like to do one day....

The GG one is made of some weird rubbery material. It sculpts great but I'm not too fond of the color. The GG ROTS Pepsi Yoda seems to be made of a heavy resin material and paints really well. Don't get me wrong though. I love both pieces!!!

I've been planning on putting a light in the Yoda Lightsaber on mine for a while, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well sure - it is Yoda after all. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If only the SSC "bust" was full size. I wonder if anyone has tried a mod in that direction.

I still think that, and theropod would agree with me, the pepsi ROTS Yoda is the finest sculpt of PT Yoda.

Yeah, I am a little biased about my ROTS Pepsi Yoda.

So my daughter is biased as well. I Love this pic! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The mixed media elements of the Sideshow and Gentle Giant 1:1 Yodas are cool, but I really like the likeness and pose of the ROTS Pepsi Yoda. A custom paint job really gives it a "statue" feel and makes it a work of art IMHO. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That it does, in spades.

Hiya,

just got my yoda today, awesome. The only thing im a little worried about is that, with him being made from silicon/rubber, im worried about drying out and cracking as some of my previous yoda incarnations (they were a lot cheaper of course!!!) have done! Do you know if there is any preventative course of action that can/should be done to prevent this liklihood?

I think it's actually a vinyl skin of some sort. I seem to remember reading a comment from a Sideshow rep to the effect that it shouldn't experience those kinds of problems due to the different materials used.
