View Full Version : For The Republic - a Photonovel

Here is the comic that I had to make for my ENG 309 class. I am presenting it just as pictures but for the class I had to create a comic book and each photo was a panel in it. I hope you guys like it! Let me know what you think!

This is our first mission, to assist in the siege of some backwater military outpost on some forgotten planet. It doesn’t really matter where we are; the mission is the same for all clones: defeat the enemy and try to survive.

I know we travel towards the battlefield. Towards unknowingly horrific death and destruction, but all I can think about is how beautiful the sun looks as it rises.

Within an hour we have arrived. I can see the smoke coming off of the battlefield. The commander screams something at us and my unit readies their gear.

I double check my DC-15A Rifle. I touch the cold steel which will soon be nearly too hot to touch and guide my hand towards the ammo pack. The charge is full, but will be empty far too quickly. I make sure I have extra packs. I am ready, ready to face death, ready to overcome it.

The gunship lands hard, but I am sure that is the last thing on the pilots’ mind when there are thousands of artillery rounds exploding all around you.

The gunship doesn’t make it far off the ground before becoming just another smoldering pile of metal.

For a second, darkness surrounds me and all I can hear is ringing in my ears.

Then faintly the sound of war engulfs me again and I see the commander yelling at us to regroup.

We hear over the communicator that the siege is not going as planned and that units are scattered all over the battlefield.

We see a Jedi, the once peaceful protectors that have now became our generals. As he slices through an opponent with ease, we see he is leading a small band of troops.

These troops are not like us. They are not the grunts of the army. They are the clones that were trained to be specialized in a cretin area. Demolitions, heavy weapons, and flame support. They are the clones that have seen many battles, have lived to tell about them, and still carry the scars from them.

The Jedi tells us that we will provide support for them. They are heading to the outposts shield generators which must be destroyed to insure our victory.

The bunker is heavily guarded, put it is nothing but an obstacle. We attack.

The sound of gunfire and smell of burning flesh and metal can make a person go mad.

Again darkness takes over me.

I awake. I can smell the bacta as it heals me.

I am lucky, the Jedi is not.

My new surroundings and the coldness tell me that what is left of my unit has made it inside the bunker and into the underground tunnels. The mission remains the same: find the power generators, destroy them, win.

The commander leads us, we take as many precautions as possible, try to go unheard. The soft hum I hear tells me we are close.

We’re here.

Am I the lucky one?

This time the blaster hits its mark.

I am still alive.

Enemy reinforcements will be here soon, but that does not matter now. I punch in the last sequence for the detonator. The room will be engulfed in a huge fireball within seconds. I will die knowing that that I did my part, did what I was bread to do, to die for a cause.

Find the power generators…

Destroy them…

Very good for a first try, I really like your customs in it. I also like the "emotional" effect, how even the main character dies, but completes his mission. Cool story too. I would say to try and improve your effects, but I can't do any better, so I'll let an established photonoveler tell you how to do that.
I hope to see more from you!

Great story! I just loved the mood of the whole thing; the clone knew he was going to die in battle some day, just a matter of when, where and how.
I especially loved the opening panels / sunrise bit ... those were some beautiful pix.
Kudos!!! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the replys! I enjoyed doing this but only had about a week to do it in so I had to rush a little. I would have prefered using photoshop to do the effects but I dont have it or the large amount of money it costs... I am glad you guys enjoyed it, now I just need to see what grade I get on it lol.

Nice work Bear... I know how time consuming these can be, especially if you only have a week to do it. Great ending too!

Really well made Bear78. I like the Nemodian in the dark hall the most. The flow of the pictures is right on and to the point. What stands out the most is the use of depth by setting shots up along diagonal axis’s verses horizontal Platforms. Something I would like to see more of.

Great way to start.

Nicely done! You really made me feel for a little plastic man http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif!(boy, that didn't come out right!!) I really like your shots of the clones stalking the Nemodian in the halls;cool stuff! Are you going to make anymore?

Thanks again guys!

I got a scanner recently and I have been thinking about scanning the actually pages and putting them up since they give the whole story a different kind of paceing and feel so I might do that if there is interest and when I get it back.

I had done another photonovel last year. It was going to be a comedic series but I only made 2 before work and school got too time consuming. The first story is kind of a stand alone though... HERE (http://www.coreplanets.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB13&Number=48301&fpart=&PHPSESSID=) is a link to them. I might come back to them and finish up the story at some point... just got to find the time...

Bear this was excellent, great job.
You did a fantastic job with the battle scenes. In particular the scene where the gunship gets hit and the clone blacks out for a minute, then slowly comes back to his senses.
I liked the 'last man alive blows up the generators' ending, reminded me of "Saving Private Ryan" a little, where the last man was supposed to blow up the bridge.

I got it back today and got a 95% on it! I got 5 points nocked off because I didnt do one of the panels that was required... but thats fine with me! If I get my scanner working soon, I will post the story in comic form!

Wow! Really good!
I love the "grunts." Are they customs or just really cool figures?

That was an awesome story! I like the ones of clones I bet they do feel a bleak existence being used for a political agenda they are no part of. great job

WOW... I was just bored and randomly checked to see if this photo novel was still around (working pics, etc) and low and behold, some newer posts!

Wow! Really good!

They are customs I made at the time... I got into doing customs for awhile and had a fun time doing them but havent done one in a long time... just dont really have the time anymore. You can see the ones I did at my website in my sig.
