ARRIVED 4/19 - PICS IN LAST POST!!

-----------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 4/12

The remaining parts shipped today! They are set to arrive in Brooklyn on 4/19, which is a Wednesday. I will likely first have time to pack them up and ship them out on 4/21 (friday). That means those of you in the Tri-State area should get your parts a week from Saturday, and everyone else the following week!

-----------------------------------------------------------
Update 4/11

There was a small issue with the Chrome balance pipes - after chroming they didn't fit exactly because of the added thickness (I think that was the issue anyway), so Roman fixed it. He assured me that he will be picked up the corrected chrome balance pipes today and will ship the order to me tomorrow.

-----------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 4/8

Roman picked up the parts today, and he'll ship everything out on Monday! At a guess, I'll get it the following Monday (4/17), and you should have your stuff shortly thereafter.

As for rod length, Roman said 9 7/8" is perfect, but 10" will work just fine as the emitter is open-ended. YAY!

-----------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 3/30

BALANCE PIPES ARE DONE - CHROMING WILL BE FINISHED NEXT WEEK, AND ROMAN WILL SHIP EVERYTHING TO ME NEXT WEEK!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 3/27

Good news guys! The plaques are done (pic in the last post) and the balance pipes should be done later this week or next. Roman has been tracking the progress and he is every excited with how they are coming out - wahoo!!

-----------------------------------------------------------

PHASE TWO - BOOSTERS, BALANCE PIPES AND PLAQUES, OH MY!! (2/22)

Hey all - I'm thrilled to announce that Roman has given me the green light on collecting payments for the boosters and balance pipes. The balacnce pipes aren't totally finished yet, but close enough that we should pay up and he'll be able to ship everything soon! The end is near!!

OK, details...

Balance Pipe: $45 Machine Finish (for weathered saber) = $38.25 // $49 Chrome (for AFBB) = $41.65
Booster: $38 Machine Finish = $32.30 // $40 Black Andonized = $34 // $40 weathered = $34
Plaques: FREE!!
Shipping Roman to me: $2 each (lighter box)
Shipping me to you: $8 each
Paypal Fees: $3 each

So we're talking $13 on top of whatever you order (Mikey, we'll figure shipping later).

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU is you post what version balance pipe and booster you want. Once I have info from everyone, I'll start collecting money.

WAHOO!!

1. Vaapad_VII - Machined, Weathered
2. MikeyX - Chrome/Black ($75.65 + int'l shipping) - PAID
3. Jedi_Dogs - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
4. Exodus - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
5. Damon5973 - Chrome/Machined ($86.95) - PAID
6. Rocketsauce - Chrome/Black ($88.65) - PAID
7. TK421mv7 - Chrome/Black ($88.65) - PAID
8. Gytheran - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
9. Vaderperpetrator - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
10. Darth_Pain - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
11. jlee562 - Machined/Weathered ($85.25) - PAID
12. gunner - Chrome/Black ($88.65) - PAID

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The 12 person maximum has been reached!!

If we have 10 or more people ordering, we will get 15% of plus free plaques

The overwhelming response has been to order some of the parts now as there is no guarantee that everything will be in stock at the same time at any given point.

Right now, the wildcard is the balance pipe (emitter) as Roman hasn't gotten his hands on one yet. He is hoping for Jan/Feb to have them available, but this is NOT definite - it could be longer, and we all have to understand that.

Pricing

Grenade - $135 = $114.75 - In Stock Now
Clamp - $29.95 = $25.46 - In Stock Now
Clamp Spacer - $22 = $18.70** - In Stock Now
Sink Knob (Chrome) - $75 = $63.75
Booster - $45 = $38.25***
Balance Pipe (Chrome) - $49 = $41.65

**EDIT - I got another email from Roman and it looks like I misunderstood and the clamp spacer will be necessary - the part of the booster that is changing (and thus causing the price increase) is the part on the pommel end - threading is being added to match the original.
This is now CONFIRMED.

***The booster will likely be $5-$10 more because of added threading to match the original

If we want to go with the grenade and the clamp now, that is $139.91. Add $5 each to shipping for Roman out to me, then another $10 should cover me to you and paypal fees. So we're talking $154.91. If we want to wait until mid/late decemeber for the sink knob to come in, it would be a total of $218.66. ADDITION: Adding the spacer in would bring it to around $237 - See POST #3 for immediate options.

My thinking is that waiting for the Sink Knob to come in would be best - its only another few weeks. I've emailed Roman again to get a more definite time frame on that.

Bottom line - we're talking around that $218 figure now and then a little more in a few months for the Balance Pipe and Booster (and possibly spacer) All said and done for EVERYTHING it looks like it will be a touch over $300 - and don't forget, free plaques too!

Additionally, Jedi_Dogs has offered to provide us (the first 15 anyway) with resistors free of charge! He has also kindly agreed to have the receive and redistribute the parts to all of us if shipping to Oklahoma (from Texas) is cheaper than it would be to New York.

So far, the list is as follows:

1. Vaapad_VII, Machine Finish
2. MikeyX, Black - PAID
3. Jedi_Dogs, Weathered - PAID
4. Exodus, Weathered - PAID
5. Damon5973, Black - PAID
6. Rocketsauce, Black - PAID
7. TK421mv7, Black - PAID
8. Gytheran, Black - PAID
9. Vaderperpetrator, Weathered - PAID
10. Darth_Pain, Black - PAID
11. jlee562, Weathered - PAID
12. gunner, Black - PAID

If anyone changes their mind, please PM me so that I get the change for sure

Here is a mock up of the plaque. I think the word "lightsaber" should be smaller, but otherwise I think it looks great. Maybe also instead of "Limited Edition" we should have "Rebelscum 2005 Edition"? Perhaps the RS logo should be a little lower so it centers w/ the RE logo...What do people think?

Also, do people want it the same size as MR plaques, or the larger size that Roman normally uses (4x1.75)?

plaque looks awesome v!

anyway, i agree, lightsaber should be smaller than obi's name...and i like the rebelscum 2005 edition over just having limited edition...and yeah, the RS logo would look better centered with the romans logo imo...plaque size doen't really matter to me personally as i don't have an extra MR style holder right now anyway...

Well, if the text changes to "Rebelscum edition" the RS logo seems a little superfluous.

I agreee that "lightsaber" should be smaller. What does everyone think of something like "Prop Builder Edition" instead of "Limited Edition" or "Rebelscum 2005 Edition"? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I also agree with V that the logos should be centered but I would like them both a little bit smaller so they do not compete with the "Star Wars" logo. I also think it would look better if the logos were at the bottom of the plaque. Now I realize that we can not copy the MR plaque design exactly but I do like their design better.

Given the option, I would prefer that the plaque be the same size as the MR plaques so that I can use a new black MR plaque stand http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i like the idea of something different for the edition name, it's not really limited since we're all doing different versions so JD has something going with this idea...

also, good call on the size of the logos versus the star wars logo, they should definitely be significantly smaller than the SW...the 2 logos on the bottom may look better too

Vaapad
03-02-2006, 08:34 PM
The Star Wars logo can be bigger and the RE one can be smaller - I have several Romans plaques and the logos always end up looking great.

The logos cannot, however, be on the bottom because of the amount of text and because "Star Wars" takes up two lines - it works for MR because "Star Wars" is on one line across the top

I can see if Roman can do "Star Wars" in one line instead of two...

from a design standpoint, it is not "balanced" and you should never have more than 2 different fonts in anything.

im not trying to be a wiseguy, but i think a graphic designer would probably do a great job with that. its not that bad, its not bad at all. just that RS logo really sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Yeah, the RS logo does look out of place. Looks asymmetrical.

the problem is also, the logos are too big. they compete with your eye. the star wars logo should be what grabs your eye. right now, it doesnt. those other 2 logos need to be smaller.

On that note... I started mine today! I decided to go with a more subtle weathering approach. This is my first attempt at Brass Black and am very pleased with the outcome. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Btw, that's some weird stuff!

Anyways, this how it came out. I think I'm going to leave mine rust-free for now. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif Of course it looks better in person. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Jedi_Dogs
03-04-2006, 12:27 AM
Looking good Joe. Can you please give us some details on your weathering techniques? Did you simply use sandpaper on the grenade or did you use something else to remove the anodizing from the aluminum?

Vaapad
03-04-2006, 02:00 AM
Interesting - so you started off w/ an Andonized grenade, and you striped parts with a dremmel?

Gytheran
03-04-2006, 09:21 AM
Yep, I started with an anodized grenade. What I did was take a small strip(maybe 1" wide) of 220 grit sandpaper, put it in the palm of my hand and twist the grenade body against the sandpaper. It MIGHT have taken 2 minutes...

If I wanted it to look rusty, all I would need to do is mist some rust-colored paint in the crevaces and wipe the surface of the cubes clean.

It definitely looks better in person, not that it looks bad in the image. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I agree.
If you think about it these aren't limited. Roman's going to sell a ton of these.
How about ......"Most screen acccurate"
Prop Builders Edition
Or something similar.

Vaapad
03-04-2006, 02:05 PM
I think the best would be "Rebelscum 2005 Edition" - we did start this order in 2005, and it was the ONLY Roman's group order here in 2005. That makes it very specific as to which sabers these are

Just wanted to throw in another plug for Stormpath's transistors. I picked up a couple sets from him about a month ago for an ANH Obi I have, and the transistors are great. Definitely worth the money, and he is a great guy to work with.

Incidentally, I'll start a different thread with pics of my Obi later. I just got it in a little bit ago, and am very happy with it - it's obviously not as screen-accurate as your Roman's will be, but I love it just the same. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's been my holy grail since I started this crazy hobby, and it's a great feeling to now have it in my collection. The other thing that I've had problems getting is an imperial threaded rod. I know it sounds so simple, but I live in a metric country! Every place I've been to the converstation has run like this:
'Do you have any threaded rod?'
'Certainly! We have it threaded 4mm, 6mm, 8mm...'

I'm after a chromed set - but I guess it's probably not worth me joining a group order since I'm in the UK - unless anyone thinks otherwise.

I'm just waiting to hear back from him on the shipping and where to send the payment and I'll be ordering some.

Count me in for a set or two. I have heard from stormpath and he is sold out of the correct (anodized) aluminum transitors for the Roman's spacer (8-32). The ones he has left fit the Parks spacer (6-32). They are $20/set.

Since nobody has chimed in yet, I would be willing to handle the transaction with stormpath. Feel free to check out my feedback thread (link in my signature.) Darth_Pain and rocketsauce can speak for me -- I handled the transaction for SaberFreak's deal last year.

Mine are machine finished - I just double checked and you're right - he has chrome in stock now. He'll likely have machined in stock soon - I'll ask and you let you know soon. I've never heard of him doing andonized, but I've never asked either.

I too am waiting for a confirmation email from him as to what he has in stock. I wanted to order a set of the machine finish weeks ago when he had them in stock but he convinced me to wait until he had the Chrome sets ready so he could send them together. I am a little upset that he is now sold out of the machine finish. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Patrick - why don't you find out how many sets of each are needed and then email him.

I had a question about the stormpath transistors. Will these transistors fit over the graflex clamp without modifications to the clamp? Or would the holes have to be drilled to make them bigger? Thanks for the help.

I used a pair of needle-nose pliers to make the clamp holes SLIGHTLY bigger - just barely though. It wasn't hard to do.

Good news guys. Stormpath says that he should have the aluminum transistor sets completed in about two weeks. If we can get together at least ten sets he will give us special pricing of $17 per set for aluminum and $22 per set for the chromed and he will ship via DHL from China. If you want me to handle the transaction with stormpath and collect funds via PayPal I'll only ask for $3 to cover the fees and shipping from me to you. If shipping ends up being a little more than I will cover the difference. That would bring the totals $20 for aluminum set and $25 for chrome set.

Please let me know who is interested and which finish you prefer.

Just to be sure you have all your bases covered... are you paying by Western Union? If so, don't forget there is a transfer fee... I believe in the vicinity of $14.00 If you use your credit card there will likely also be a "cash advance" fee. So, if you plan on using WU (better than sending cash through the mail) you should ideally go to an actual location and fork over cash. Please let us know if you'll need to adjust your price accordingly. I was planning to get some sets on my own but I'd much prefer a PayPal transaction. Just make sure you are asking for a fair amount that won't leave you eating too much of the costs.

That said, I would like two sets of chromed transistors. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you pay online you can use a debit card and there won't be a cash advance fee. You might also be able to send him a paper WU money order through the mail to avoid the fee, and that is recoverable if lost. Not sure if he'll want to deal with that though, but just a thought

4. TK421mv7 - 1 set chromed
5. TK421mv7 - 1 set chromed
6. damon5973 - 1 set aluminum

It looks like we should not have a problem meeding the minimum 10 sets for the discount.

I had planned to send stormpath payment via a paper Western Union money order. I am not sure of the costs but I will look into it. Alex and Dave, thanks for the ideas, I had not considered the WU fees would be that much. Hopefully I will not have to adjust the prices.

4. TK421mv7 - 1 set chromed
5. TK421mv7 - 1 set chromed
6. damon5973 - 1 set aluminum
7. Gytheran - 1 set aluminum
8. westward4 - 1 set chromed
9. rocketsauce - 1 set chromed
10. Darth_Pain - 1 set chromed
11. Darth_Pain - 1 set aluminum

I heard back from stormpath and he can only accept a Western Union transfer (or cash) as payment. I am not comfortable sending such a large amount of cash to China so I am leaning toward the transfer. As both Alex and Dave have stated this will cost about $14 dollars. This MAY add a dollar to the final price.

Hey guys,

As chance would have it, I ordered a chrome handwheel and an anodized booster from Roman late last week and they arrived at my pad today. You will not be disappointed with the quality of these items.

I previously had the old version of the handwheel and "gear", and these new versions just blow the old ones away! That's not to take anything away from Roman's previous efforts. It's just that the old pieces looked rather toy-ish. These newer ones look like they were something at one point in time, if you take my meaning.

I'm even considering pulling together some more money and ordering another set of parts from Roman to make a clean version.

Enjoy your purchases, gentlemen! I know I'll enjoy mine!

Hey all - Everyone should have received their tracking info via automated email from paypal. If anyone did not, PM me. I probably won't make it to the post office today, so I will drop everything off tomorrow morning. Those of you in the tri-state area should get your package on Monday, everyone else Tuesday or Wednesday. Please everyone POST IN THE THREAD when you get your parts.

My parts arrived all the way over here in the UK yesterday - looks like I got them before some of you guys in the US http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The assembled product is, of course, amazing http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif I will take some comparison pics between the Romans, Parks, and MR when I finish up a few things on the Romans and get some time at home when there's still sunlight.

I've mailed out the transistors to Revan and _Lee_ so you guys should get those within the next couple of days.

Many thanks to Vaapad for running this order and being helpful at every point. Also thanks to Jedi_Dogs for the transistor order (and the the original transistors he gave us with the first part of the run), and also didn't you sort out the calculator strips from Blast-tec? Thanks to TK421mv7 for organising the group buy of the chromed clamps. Finally thanks to Roman and Stormpath for making the great parts! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Couple of minor niggles with the new style Romans booster and emitter:

1. The anodized finish on the booster is slightly different from the grenade. The grenade is shiny, the booster is matte. Still looks pretty cool - but I thought they would match exactly.

2. Unless I'm missing something the fixing screw does not attach to the emitter - it slides on and off and will require fixing in position somehow. It's not a big problem - I guess I was expecting the whole emitter to just fix onto the threaded rod somehow.

Also lastly I also got a set of Stormpath transistors threaded for my Parks Obi. Having spent a bit of time bending the clamp holes wider for the Romans spacer I was stunned to find that the 6-32 threads screw straight into the Parks without any problem whatsover - I didn't even have to loosen the clamp! Score 1 for Parks there - although IMHO that is the only score over the fantastic Romans parts. I wonder if Roman could offer a 6-32 threading for the transistors (or do both, 8-32 on one side, 6-32 on the other?). The smaller threading seems like an easy choice for me - the 8-32 threading simply doesn't fit through standard clamps.

If you scroll up in this thread to look for a pic of the emitter parts by jlee562 - The part on the right pushes into the main emitter on the left - on mine this squeezed and snapped into place nicely and isn't going anywhere unless I want to take it apart again which is exactly how it should be. The middle bit screws onto the end of the theaded rod - this then fits into the emitter - but there's nothing obvious to attach it to (unless I'm missing something which is entirely possible!) so it slides up and down. It's no biggie 'cos I will be able to fix it in place with something (undecided exactly how as yet - I had no time to think about it last night as I was out all evening so only had a few mins to put it together).

Oh and it's cool having plaque no. 2 - shows how quick I was off the blocks for this one as I'd been waiting ages for those last few parts to be identified and replicated http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looking at the Romans website I think I am missing something - it says there are two set screws included and given those (either side of the inner bit of the emitter to tighten it to the threaded bit I presume) then it would all make sense. I'll have to go through all the packaging tonight to see if I got them. Anyone got a pic of them so I know what I'm looking for (other than two very small screws)?

Where were the black screws? Were they in a plastic bag or something? Anything that would help me find them tonight when looking through the packaging would be useful http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The middle and outer section of mine fit snugly together just right - they'll hold together, but can be snapped apart if necessary http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's just the middle to centre bit I have a problem with.

the screws may have only been for the weathered ones - I don't remember now. That makes sense tho because all the screws did was hold the adapter to the middle piece - it's not a snug enough fit w/ the machined ones, whereas on the AFBB the chrome adds extra width

I think there is a way to use both screws so that no glue is necessary - one will hold then inner to the middle, and the second will hold then middle to the outer. However, like I said, I immediately lost one of my screws, and krazy glue was an easy fix

Well, the screws are cute, but unless you have the .0001mm allen wrench, they're pretty worthless. lol

They are FAR too short to use to secure all three pieces together. Roman suggests JB weld to hold the outter sleeve on...

MAN! those set screws were small!! I wish we had a little warning about what size allen we would need. The smallest I have is a .50 & that's still too big! So, I'll have to keep them finger tight until I get a wrench that small.

As for JB weld, I think it'll hold much better than super glue. It's made for metal too. I think the superglue would eventually flake off, but I may be wrong.
I'm going to use JB though.

OK - update from my previous posts:

Set screws found - they were a victim of not having much time last night before going out - I simply put away the little bag with the minute set screws into the box where I kept my parts - I must have just not realised what they were and then forgotten about them. Once they were found it was the work of minutes to use them to firmly attach the middle bit of the emitter to the center bit (with the thread in it). I didn't use an allen key, but instead used some padded long nosed pliers (turning the emitter to screw them in rather than the pliers) and they worked a treat. The set screws gripped it tight enough for me to screw the whole emitter onto the threaded rod as one peice. Handy hint - the set screws have two ends - one end is kind've pointed, the other has a micro indentation which is probably where you would use a miniature allen key. Making sure the pointed end is pointing inwards (towards the object you're trying to grip) makes a difference, and they really do grip the center bit quite firmly when you get it right.

So my niggle no. 2 has gone away http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So that's the long story. Short story for everyone getting parts - look out for the tiny bag with two little black dots in it - look closer they are screws that go into the two tiny holes on the middle portion of the emitter and are very important.

Hmmm... sorry about the tiny set-screws. But with a wall-thickness of only 1/16" there's not much of an option, really.

I do recommend using JB Weld for attaching the two sleeves of the Balance Pipe together. At one time I made my two piece emitter a press-fit, but not everyone was able to assemble the parts without damaging them. Press fit requires A LOT of PRESSING. Sorry, but JB Weld works much better.

As for the transistors, yes, mine are 8/32" which do require a small amount of widening of the clamp notch. However, it's very minimal and the transistor will cover the small amount if filing. OR you guys could get a 6/32" transistors and insert tape/plastic/anything flexible in to the clamp's threading. The transistors should self thread in to the plastic/rubber.

Hope that helps. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The only problem with the size of the screws was that I didn't even see them first time round http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif Once I found them there were no problems whatsoever.

On the transistor threading I should have made it clear that after the widening and a bit of filing and stuff they all worked fine - and the transistors do cover all of that - sorry I didn't make that clearer. All I meant was that the smaller threading was even easier http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My two piece emitter does snap together nicely (if you mean the two bits that don't attach to the rod) - is that because mine is chromed or an early set? Either way it's perfect in that regard.

Thanks for the great parts http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I used a small set of thin nosed pliers to do the job as it looked too small to get an allen key that would fit very easily - I happen to have a pair that have rubber on them so it didn't scratch or damage anything - but then even if you did get a small scratch it would be out of sight behind the outer emitter bit. It was really easy - I used the pliers to grip the screw, put it in the hole and turned the emitter bit (rather than attempting to turn the screw with pliers which would be harder).

Hope that helps.

On rods I had a funny UK metric experience on that one - everywhere I went said 'yes, of course we have threaded rods - 4mm, 8mm, 10mm.' I ended up getting my wife to pick some up from the US while she was out there recently http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is where the JB Weld discussion came from. On my set the outer and middle bits of the emitter snap together nicely - this is probably because mine is chromed which adds a bit of thickness. As I remember yours is machine finish so you might need to glue these two bits together by the sounds of it.

I was able to get the screws in (well, the one I ended up not losing) with my fingers

http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That's some small precision fingers! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a shame you lost one - I found that one held it pretty firmly to the center bit, but two held it totally in place like it was a single piece.

I figured that was the case. Ah well. If Roman is reading this and feels like sending me new screws, more than welcome http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I left ya some feedback. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On a side note... Do not use aluminum black in doors!! I don't care what kind of ventilation you think you have...

Don't be an idiot! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

On a totally unrelated note... does anyone remember 1986? Could someone tell me where I was? http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

More pics of my finished saber as requested in my WIP thread (http://threads.rebelscum.com/favlinker.php?Cat=25&Entry=18028&F_Board=Propsfanmade&Thread=1658317&partnumber=&postmarker=)

And yes Joe, I stressed in my tutorial that Alumiblack should NOT be used indoors. I made the same mistake - the stuff is awful

I lost track of who has received their parts - so lets try this. Has anyone NOT received theirs by now? If so, please post

got my parts today. the chromed pieces fit snugly so no screws for me, but my question is that

why do some of the parts seem a bit on the loose side? do I need to really tighten them that much???

Sorry - this one is long closed, as is a second one that came and went about two weeks ago.
