View Full Version : Interactive Photonovel - CRITICAL VOTING JUNCTURE!

10-21-2005, 12:50 PM
Well, since interest in the interactive photonovel over in the customs thread has fallen into the negative numbers, I thought I'd move the game over to this thread, which seems to be the home of photonovels!

For anyone new to the game, I invite you to check out the archived chapters which are available on my website
HERE! (http://www.angelfire.com/comics/lancequazar/intercont.html)

For old veterans and those familiar with the game, here's the latest, newest chapter!

The point of this game is that YOU, the players, determine the outcome of the story and the actions our main character will take. So jump in with comments, suggestions, ideas, dialogue, analysis, theories, etc. etc.

The more players and the more posts, the better! So here we go (again!)

Whoo hooo! Update time!

Alas, despite my promises, this update isn't really the big step forward I had been hoping.

Instead, most of the update concerns a "meanwhile" scene where you're not present.

I originally planned to show the story exclusively from your perspective, but this scene doesn't really give anything away that you shouldn't already know anyway.

Besides, I think fleshing out some of the other characters might make the game more fun and make it feel more cinematic.

However, as for your current predicament, the course of action we're taking is one suggested initially by Findswoman, which was supported by Darth Delicious, The Spectre,
CorranHorn and NoMercyJoe.

Chewie's suggestion of giving him money was in the same vein and Ryan was up for giving him either.

Oh, and thanks to smartypants for participating, too. He also agreed with the majority.

Only Diddly was really left out in the cold, overrode by the rest of the group.

And newcomer Jedistyle made the unique suggestion of checking out the Imperial comlink first.

As always, I try to incorporate as many non-contradictory suggestions as possible.

Okay, confession time. I put the drunk guy in there really for one main reason - to demonstrate the usefuless of your inventory.

You're currently carrying around quite a lot of stuff. Unlike those old "King's Quest" games, none of those items was designed around a specific use.

So don't be afraid to use that stuff and be creative. In this case, either using money or the booze to bribe the drunk would have worked, as would have using your toolkit to jigger the elevator yourself.

However, having the drunk on your side may yield more benefits down the line, so giving him the alcohol seems like a good idea.

So thanks to all the players. Great to have so many returning players and a few newcomers, too!

Now, there really isn't much of a pressing need for input here, since, in the next installment, the drunk will finish fixing the elevator and you'll be on your way. So jump in if you like, otherwise, I'll just get the next chapter up as soon as possible.

here we go!

Well, the story has moved forward without the help of anyone on RS. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Here goes...

Okay, folks, time for a quick update!

Findswoman, Ryan and CorranHorn all suggested trying or tinkering with the seemingly broken Imperial comlink.

But the analysis came from jedistyle, who had some very intriguing (and alarming) ideas about why the comlink might not be working properly, even though he was the one who suggested turning it on in the first place!

So I tried to combine the two a bit in my reply. Here goes!

(Please note, there is NO missing image, that icon is just a glitch!)

(Please ignore the missing image icon! Again, it's just a glitch!)

AND in response to a few follow-up questions about the comlink, I posted this reply:

Come on, guys, don't be the only website on the block who isn't playing this exciting new game! Join the fun!

10-23-2005, 05:54 PM
Slip the drunk the comlink. He won't know how he got it anyway or why the stormtrooper was dead. You can slip away and continue on the ship. Go find the Trandoshan too. Leave the ship it's dangerous.

10-26-2005, 09:05 PM
Anyone else? This should continue!

10-27-2005, 09:05 AM
smash it!

10-27-2005, 10:09 AM
According to Lance's recent posts at www.jedidefender.com (http://www.jedidefender.com), we can't smash it; it's made of too strong of a material... I say ditch it, along with the Stormtrooper belt behind the broken panel.

10-27-2005, 11:52 AM
Hey, everyone! I expected this thread to die a quiet death over here at RS from lack of interest.

Thanks for the recent posts. If you want to continue to participate in the game, I am delighted to have you, but I have a few quick comments.

First of all, as Chewie said, the comlink is too strong to destroy by simple means like smashing it on the floor, with your toolbox or by trying to "short it out" with liquid. These ideas were suggested on the other sites.

Currently, the players are deadlocked about how to proceed next, with four voting to hit the drunk on the head and plant the comlink on him and four voting to stash the comlink in the elevator's removable control panel.

At this point, coming up with another suggestion is kind of like voting for Ralph Nader - you're just going to get drowned out by the two major parties.

However, if you are able to come up with a unique and innovative solution which manages to avoid the problems of the other two ideas (and each one has its own set of pros and cons, which are being vigorously debated), then of course you are welcome to post it. If the idea is good enough and clever enough, then the other debate might become moot.

For that reason, the recent suggestions by blight nightmare and shellachead will not make a difference. Feel free to post again!

I ask the following, though. If you're going to post, please try to be as "active" a player as possible. Read the entire game and give at least a little bit of thought to the current dilemma.

The posters from the other sites are all veteran players in good standing and have all made very thoughtful and well-reasoned arguments for their choices. Please don't post glib or hasty posts or "stuff the ballot box" with short and poorly considered suggestions just to influence the voting. I don't think that would be fair to the others.

But I don't want that to discourage anyone at all. Really, I would LOVE to get as many people involved in this game as possible.

By the way, those comments were not in any way meant as a "dig" or criticism of the recent posts by blight nightmare and shellachead. Though short in length, I believe their posts were thoughtfully considered.

In the current scene, some very compelling and persuasive arguments have been made on both sides for either suggestion and I will try to post some of the highlights of that later for your perusal, or you are welcome to check out the other threads at Jedi Defender (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=6574.150) and FFURG (http://www.ffurg.com/FForums/index.php?s=5002e4800ea7eeacafcddc7789615a6d&act=ST&f=12&t=671&st=105).

Anyway, I would love it if this game were to continue here at RS. This was the first website where I put up the game and was the game's "primary home" during those memorable first few months. So keep the dream alive and keep playing!

your humble narrator

10-27-2005, 12:59 PM
LOL just call me a noob. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I would stash it. This way you know they will head for the signal and you can go anywere but.

10-30-2005, 12:35 AM
I'd stash it too. The drunk helped you so it wouldn't feel right to get him in trouble with the Empire. Also, if you stash it can't you send the elevator back up so they won't know the transmission is coming from the elevator in the sewer level?

10-30-2005, 04:51 AM
Hey, welcome back to the game, Ashared Hett and thanks for the great suggestion!

I read your story in the ROTS thread and will comment soon. But I enjoyed it very much!

11-03-2005, 06:08 AM
And now, on with the show!

As you all know, we had a very lively, very spirited debate after the last round and two main camps eventually emerged - those voting to stash the incriminating items in the elevator's control panel, or more extreme suggestion of hitting the drunk on the head and planting the gear on him.

Though some extremely passionate and well-reasoned arguments were made on both sides, ultimately the "stash it's" won out with a total of 6 votes to 4. At the moment, I don't have time to give a complete play-by-play of the voting and suggestions, but I hope to soon.

And I was delighted that we got a few respones here at RS just when I had all but given up. Keep up the great work!

So here's the new scene, which ends on another frustrating, incomplete note. But, damn, it took me forever to finish this one, my camera was acting up and I couldn't get an in-focus picture to save my life. So, as always, the real fun seems just beyond reach, right around the corner...

Here we go!

Great job Lance, this was my favorite chapter so far! Really well done. The sewer shots are amazing. I'll comment more at JD with what I think our character should do next.

11-03-2005, 01:44 PM
Thanks, Chewie! And don't worry, I haven't forgotten about my delayed comments for "C.o.D"...probably this week-end!

(I look forward to reading it again!)

11-03-2005, 05:12 PM
Take your time, but I always look forward to your in-depth reviews. It turns making them into something much more worthwhile, and it's better than getting comments like "Nice!" or "Cool!"

I commented in more detail on this latest chapter at JD, here is what I said -

First, I have to compliment you again on how you made the sewer look. It really has a nasty look to it, and having the lizard is the perfect touch, showing that the poor folk are living with vermin.

Now what would I do?

(1) I agree with In Rem that Crate is probably a decent guy, and doesn't seem to be trying to start a problem with you. So I'd thank him and tell him you'll remember his kindness.

(2) Look around the floor, see if there's anything you can use. If there is, grab it and toss the Ithorian 5 credits. Now you're hopefully making another friend, even if it is a drunk. But if you end up in this area again later, better to have some friends on your side in case there is trouble.

(3) Yep, don't take off the helmet until after Crate leaves. Get in the tunnel and take the helmet off. I might leave the poncho on though, as it might help you conceal any items.

(4) Get to the meeting area.

And I agree, this is good progress here, I feel like the story is picking up.

11-03-2005, 10:19 PM
It was worth it to keep Crate with you after all. I don't trust the ugnaught and his pals. It seems odd that right after you come in he sends his friend off. Mabey to alert the Imperials. I'd take the tunnel to hide. Also, mabey if you look around you can find some clothing to make you fit in with the sewer type.

11-04-2005, 09:40 AM
Go into the tunnels. With little time left you can't risk an entanglement with any low lifes that could slow you down.

11-04-2005, 03:31 PM
Hey, thanks for the replies, you guys!

So here's a quick "reply" round-up, showing where the current voting stands so far...

EIGHT votes for going through the tunnels.

Only two dissenting, InRem, who worries about getting jumped by thugs and Clone Commander Gree who warns of possible dionagas.

Even in Florida that's a pretty decisive majority.

For some reason, the majority seems to think the tunnels will be LESS full of thugs than the hallways. Go figure... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Additionally, Chewie, Ashared Hett and Findswoman have all expressed curiosity about the various junk items on the ground.

Look for a "mini post" to deal with those particular concerns within the next day or two.

And, of course, there are various comments about clothing, helmet wearing, and various and sundry other concerns which will all be sorted out with before the next chapter.

But, as always, additional input, analysis and discussion is welcome and encouraged right up until the new scene is posted!

Great, GREAT job, gang!!

11-04-2005, 04:31 PM
The junk items may be of help. Look through them for something useful and get an extra bottle of booz--it helped the first time. I would suggest to go ahead through the sewer passage. You've already encountered imps (though you said more will be coming). Chances are there aren't any more Stormtroopers at the end of the passage. You should ask some local sewer people where it goes before going in but I'd say it's tempting and you've already avoided imperials so it will take you farther away.

11-06-2005, 12:23 PM
Okay, gang, here's a very mini-update to follow up on the questions posed after the last one, specifically about searching through the debris looking for useful items (as suggested by Chewie, Findswoman, Ashared Hett and Blight) and asking Crate about directions/signage in the tunnels to find your way to your rendezvous, as suggested by Chewie, Blight and Findswoman.

At present, we are leaning very heavily in the direction of going into the tunnels, but more input, suggestions, votes, analysis and questions are always welcome up until the next chapter is posted!

So here goes...

11-06-2005, 02:25 PM
Hmm, nothing of help and we have a chance of getting lost. I still don't know if I'll change my mind though. I just remembered something. The guy who we planted the tracking device on might be in the sewers. Major Wofell told him to go down into the sewers so he might track the Empire down here so I think it's still wise to take the tunnels just in case.

Very astute observation, Ashared Hett, but remember - the tracking device you planted on that homeless guy came from Callie the bartender, not the Imperials.

11-06-2005, 05:20 PM
Hmmm...Not to revealing though less encouraging about going through the passage. You're just tempting us to use it though. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif For the character's safety it's probablly a better idea at this point to me that he does not use the passage but its calling. If the sections are marked as the drunk says (who seems rather with it for a drunk) than you might as well go through. Things don't get much worse as I said before as far as Imps go.

11-08-2005, 06:12 AM
Hey, everyone! It seems like as good a time as any to remind everyone of the open "naming contest" for the interactive photonovel.

Since the beginning of the story, our young hero has been without a name!

So feel free to make your suggestions! All entries will be considered!!

If I have to come up with something on my own, rest assured, it will stink!

So let's get creative!

11-20-2005, 10:48 PM
Well, gang, it's been a looong time coming, but we finally make it to the meeting with "Blondie", which was selected as a course of action waaaay back in April.

As always, great comments from everyone, though, this time, the decision to go into the tunnel/vent/conduit was nearly universal, with only In Rem and Clone Commander Gree voting for the hallway.

Votes for the tunnels came from Ryan/SLC, jedistyle, Findswoman, Ashared Hett, Corran Horn, Shellachead, Blight, NoMercyJoe, Chewie and Diddly

Findswoman, Chewie and In Rem all suggested taking off the helmet, but once Crate was out of sight. And Corran Horn suggested taking out your blaster, to be on the ready.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the "Name Game". Findswoman cautioned against tell Crate your name was Deak, lest it get back to Callie, and smartypants suggested just giving him your real last name for the same reasons.

And, in a shining example of inter-player cooperation and communcation, Chewie and Findswoman eventually reached a compromise about how to try to stay in touch with Crate in the future, should the desire or need arise.

So, at long last, here we are (at least partially)...the moment that has been postponed for over six months....the return of "Blondie" (who was also called "Doc" by her companion in her first appearance, something I meant to repeat here but forgot to. Oops.)

Cool update. I say we don't back out. It took us this long to get here and it seems to be our only option. Since they seem to be alert for imperials, I'd let them know that its you before you burst in there.

11-22-2005, 08:40 AM
I vote to go in, with blaster raised. Begin asking questions, and if they resist, then ACTION! Time to get some answers!

Good work, Lance. I had to catch up on the story, but now that I am caught up, look forward to see how the story goes. Very unique idea with the Interactive photonovel. Keep up the good work, and more great backgrounds!

11-22-2005, 02:21 PM
My furthered response is in the photonovel thread but you gotta go in.

12-02-2005, 08:01 AM
Okay, gang, I will definitely be working on a new chapter this week-end.

Here's where we stand right now and, once again, it's a nail-biter.

Basically, we have two different approaches here, the "Aggressive" approach, which consists of various suggestions like, "go in with your gun drawn", "wait until Fang turns his back and charge in," "Demand they drop/hand over their weapons", "Grab Fang and put the gun to his head," etc. etc.

And the players in that category are:

In Rem

Then there's the other group, advocating a less threatening, more "Cautious" posture:

Clone Commander Gree
Ashared Hett
and, Chewie, more or less - (Chewie threw out two suggestions, the second of which is very much in line with this group. The 1st suggestion is slightly more aggressive, but far less so than the first group. Chewie, if you'd like to clarify or change positions, feel free!

So even conservatively, that's 5.5 "Cautious" votes to four "Aggressive" votes.

(Regular player Blight posted as well, but his suggestion was not specific enough to be counted in either camp. Feel free to elaborate, Blight!!!)

As always, new votes, changed votes, new suggestions, ideas, analysis, questions, etc. etc. are always welcome right up until a new chapter is posted!

So talk amongst yourselves......

I can only say that - for our own sake - I hope some of these passive softies grow a backbone. I don't want the story to end with a dead protagonist laying in a sewer somewhere. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

PLEASE make sure you post this at JD! I love it! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

12-03-2005, 05:29 PM
Well, so far, it seems like everyone's opinions are fairly well entrenched!

However, since the FFURG forums have been down for a couple days, I may wait until they're back up before I start the update...so it's never too late!

10-22-2006, 04:39 PM
As requested in another thread, I'm bumping up older photonovels for newer members to read.

10-23-2006, 08:16 PM
Bumping this is a good idea... plus it might get Lance to update again (update Lance! update Lance!).

10-23-2006, 10:56 PM
Bumping this is a good idea

Amen, c'mon Lance ... keep it goin'! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

10-24-2006, 01:41 AM
Wow, this thread doesn't even have the most recently updated chapters from last year. I'll have to rectify that....

...and maybe update... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
