I wanted to pick up the old POTF2 one a few weeks ago and the local scalper shop wanted over 20 buck for that POS! Glad this one is coming soon.

It's not official. Just something silly, that RS mod and member Curto slapped on.

Have to ask him what it refers to.
If I had to guess, it's because the character/Hasbro have slacked for too long in getting an accurate mold produced.

I don't even think Hasbro would have the ***** to repack the POTF2 R5. Public lynchings and mass hysteria would ensue.

my guess is hes a slacker because all he does is stand there then pass out.
no work for r5.

whats this expensive to make stuff?
they have a dozen old body molds to choose from, they just need to make a head.
and they already have a pretty good head from the star tours one.

on this figure you should be able to mail your old potf2 one in and get this free because they made the worst star wars figure ever the first time.

They wouldn't just repack Attack R5. They wouldn't. They just wouldn't. La la la I can't hear you they wouldn't wouldn't wouldn't.

After they release the resculpt we've always wanted, I vote we give the whole Attack R5 thing the Armin Tanzarian treatment (http://www.snpp.com/episodes/4F23) and refuse to admit it ever happened.

I like POTF2's R5-D4.

Especially because he has gun barrels.

The yellow button is barely noticable, and he really is a great sculpt by the mid '90s standards.

Besides the fact, you know, it's out of proportion, has an unarticulated third leg, and oh yeah, breaks in half and shoots a missile.

I think it was over on GH over the summer. I agree, no more work or money than any other new figure. I think they just want to concetrate on what sells. But since this is a collectors foucsed line they figured it would. On any other kiddie-directed-action-feature-ladden line R5 would rot on the pegs. That is unless he split open and shot a missile.

Deak_Starkiller

I'll simply be happy with a simple resculpt, no features this time to snazz it up like they did in the past...wise decision on their part to axe Attack R2 and Threepio.

At least give him a rolling feature...he had some pretty gigantic wheels in the movie! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The point Adam was making was that it wasn't cost-effective to do the retooling for the EE Astromech exclusive. His initial post was a bit misleading in that regard, but he did correct it in his next Q&A.

i cant really see what the issue here is. they have several diff body styles to choose from ( the rolling r2 body should work) so all they really need is the head which they already had if anyone ever saw the prototype for the star tours figure. they actually changed that figure for some ******* reason. but watch them screw it up SOMEHOW...i'm thinking explody head action!

I'm with you though, this is my #1 most wanted figure next to the AT-AT Driver. The POTF2 version isn't even "good enough", unlike many POTF2 figures (ex. POTF2 AT-AT Driver has sufficed for years, but the POTF2 R5-D4 has just been BLEH for years).

Yep! Takes a bit of work, just as the R4 droids do, for the Jedi Starfighters; but he'll fit nicely into an ARC. I don't know how well any of the cable-feet droids fit into the Dagobah/Red-Leader X-wings though, but I imagine they'll be okay.

Odd that they'd use the VOTC mold again, since it's being used for Hoth R2... what happened to the "can't use the same mold blah blah" that was the excuse for the Tac Ops trooper not being the SA mold we saw at Comic-Con?

I've got a theory -- Hoth R2's white-background promo pic showed without a doubt it was the R4-G9 mold. This R5-D4 promo pic shows the VOTC mold. I'm wondering if someone at Hasbro decided to switch 'em as they entered production? Maybe it was cheaper to keep R2 on the VOTC mold, and make a new head for the R4 mold, than to deal with a new head sculpt on the action-feature VOTC body? Or something along those lines.

Unless, of course, R5-D4 has a "bad motivator" action feature, where one of his top panels just pops up a bit when you turn his head... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Basically I'm just thinking maybe they switched it, since the Hoth R2 photo proved inaccurate.

For those of you wishing to dispose of your POTF2 R5, I think I have a suggestion for you. Wouldn't it be fitting to strap R5 to a rocket, since a rocket was included with him? Since it's New Year's soon, you can easlily grab some fireworks over the next few weeks, and there's some poetic justice to have R5 perish at the hands of a rocket, don't you think?

Rocket launching feature, indeed!

I gotta agree with you. Thus far, out of the Carkoon, Hoth, and Geonosis waves, Tatooine looks the best. Don't get me wrong, Carkoon had Han, Leia and Bib, Hoth has Veers, Derlin and the AT-AT Driver, Geonosis had...ugh...well I guess you could say the Utapau Clone, but Tatooine has Hem,Garidan,Momaw,R5,and Luke, even the Sandtrooper is decent. Hell, Vader is a great figure (they're releasing the hell out of it, but its still a great figure)

Thus Far, Tatooine is the best wave.

Hell, to be honest, if Hasbro took the OTC R2 and stuck an R5 head on, gave it the proper paint scheme and tossed it in the package labeled "R5-D4" I'd be all over it.

All that keeps the VOTC mold from being perfect for R5 is the fear of an action feature. I'd adore my VOTC R2 if not for the annoying periscope pop-up feature. I never minded the shiny dome, though I prefer the brushed-metal look, particularly given all the other 'metal'-domed astromechs from ROTS and the EE packs have it; but the pop-up scope kills it! You can't turn his head without the dang thing popping up! I worry that they'll leave that function intact somehow with R5, so you can't turn his head without something jumping out. It makes R2 look silly in the ROTS starfighters, if you turn his head to face the front of the ship. I don't want the same to happen to R5.

I preferred the periscope from the vintage line, where you had to manually raise & lower it, independent of how the head's turned... AND the periscope could turn, too! That's what I'd like, even if there's a bad motivator feature. Don't link it to the head's motion because it gets in the way. If the final R5 ends up the VOTC mold, the middle leg's removable. If it's the R4G9 mold, it's retractable.

As for accessories, theories about other Sandcrawler droids are the most plausible, I think, unless they do rehash Gonk's old Jawa pal (my favorite Jawa to date) which would ALSO make a lot of sense.

True, I would have prefered that too actually (hell, I'd prefer that EVERY astromech figure from here on in utilized the R4-G9 mold), but IMO the VOTC R2 mold is just about on-par with the R4-G9 mold. Not as perfect, but damn close (and close enough to be labeled perfection).

The R4-G9 mold solves the retractable leg problem flawlessly, and also has all the necessary details. But then again the VOTC R2 mold also has the details. The only factor that doesn't make the VOTC R2 mold as good as the R4-G9 mold is that the retractable leg is usually removable, which solves the problem but it'd be a lot nicer if every astromech's rectractable leg was retracted at the turn of the dome.

I'm just thankful Hasbro came through and MADE this figure, considering the years of being stuck with that horrid POTF2 R5-D4.

Evidently, I'm the only one that's noticed this but isn't he supposed to be dirty?

Yup, it's been mentioned before but everyone's just so happy with the new figure that they set aside their piddly gripes and supported the fact that as a community we finally got what we were asking for.

You know what? I somehow always HATE the weathering they do on the astrodroids. Often it is just a little too heavy or overdone for my taste. I am thrilled that he is shiny and new. . .

I, too, wonder if this is the final mold. I mean, wasn't the hoth artoo also showns at one point as being the VOTC mold and then it turned out to instead be the preview Sith R4?

Either was is fine with me. I am just so happy that at long last a childhood classic will shine again in all the modern glory that he deserves!

Well he is a little bit weathered, he has dust between his eyes http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif I really hope they do that with R5 also since the R4 mold is the ultimate mold. Although I would be happy with the votc mold also since it is also one of the best.

It was the other way around actually. Originally, the R2 was shown as using the RotS astromech mold (and said to be electronic too) and came out as VOTC.

In this case, since we've seen them use VOTC on R5 in 2 different cases, I think it'll turn out the same. It seems like that's the astromech mold Hasbro wants to go with from now on.

I don't consider the twisting head an action feature, and the removable section isn't really action oriented. It can wheel around. Definately pysched about this figure.

Toonimator
04-04-2006, 05:12 PM
He meant the pop-up periscope that occurs when you twist VOTC R2's head. I hate that, and it's the reason I'm hoping we get an R2 based on the ROTS R4 mold that's nice & basic with a brushed-metal dome like the ones in the EE packs. Then I can use my shiny VOTC R2 for a Yavin Ceremony diorama http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Toy Fair pics aren't clear as to whether R5's got a pop-up feature or not. I, for one, hope not, as there's greater chance they'll do R5 repaints if he's a nice basic droid with a clicky head & removable 3rd leg.

For me it's great, because in the process of space I decided to scale back my collection, and for the most part just pick up the VOTC/VTSC, and new versions of figures that were in the Vintage Line. And this figure is exactly that, a figure from the vintage line that is done with the quality of the VOTC. I can understand all the different reasons to care and not care, but I'm definately pumped. The sandtrooper of the wave is cool, but i already have the Evolutions one's so I don't really need more. I'll still probably grab one cause it's got the different pauldron, but it's not really an all new figure for me, so this is the bright spot of the wave for me.

Ok, finally found this thread. A bit dusty by now.

Anyway, to all who have found this figure, are the "eyes" on your painted well or sloppy. The one I found has the pair of "eyes" painted with one stroke of silver paint, so there is paint in between them. Not the best job I've seen. Just wondering if there are better painted ones out there, or if this is the best I can expect to find. Thanks!

I also just picked up the new R5 today and I'm thrilled to finally have a quality version of this guy. Like many it has been a long wait to finally make up for that POC Attack R5. For a character that is pretty recognizable and can reuse a lot of astromech parts it took a long time for this to come out. Just glad its finally here.

Do it. This is my favorite R-Unit sculpt ever, personally. They took all the great things about the Vintage R2 body and did a nice paint job overall. I have zero complaints and out of the new wave, I pick him up the most to play around with.
