Hoth wave pictures have shown up so what does everyone think of the new Major Bren Derlin figure seen here (http://images.entertainmentearth.com//AUTOIMAGES/HS85770Blg.jpg)?

Not bad at all and a welcome addirtion to the collection.

Thoughts on Major Bren Derlin?

He is cool. spot on likeness, just not the coolest character.

I really like the direction Hasbro is going in for once. All the new stuff seems really well done and they are listening to the fans.

Yay Cliff from Cheers. Brilliant!

I just don't get why Rieekan is also in this wave when these 2 character look like they are wearing the same costume.

This figure looks brilliant and its nice to have a new character. Not sure which is best Derlin or the AT-AT driver. This wave is actaully getting me excited about the waves to come... after the 1st wave list I wasnt expecting much for the rest of the line. I do agree, however, that we didnt need Derlin and Reikan.. they are in the same uniform and we got a pretty good Reikan from the last Saga wave.

Should've been a Hoth Leia instead of Rieekan. It's been ages since Hoth Leia has been on the market.

Sculting looks great on these figs, looks like they stepped it up a notch. I too am worried about pegwarming, plain human side characters just don't seem to sell like the rest of the aliens, etc.

Now, I'd like to see Cliffy hitting the autograph circuit so I can get the fig signed!

Not the biggest human Rebel fan, but I have to say that Derlin is a cooler cat than the big wigs.

Derlin was given great justice with his sculpt and paint apps.

He'll be added to my collection, as he is my fourth favorite of the wave (behind the other three new sculpts).

You've come a long way, Derlin, and along with Veers, and the Power Droid, have eliminated three vintage figs in need of a current sculpting and Basic carding.

Hate to be the nit-picker here.. but Bren "Cliffy" Derlin is a Major. Rieekan is a General. There outfits are similar but the rank insignias are different. And coming from someone with military relatives, I can vouch that you NEVER screw up that rank thing.

Besides.. why are you demoting Rieekan.. he did the best he could with what he had.. blame that damn scurfy nerfherder for destroying the droid and alerting the Empire... give the man a break http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What I wanna know is why Derlin gets to go by his full name while General (Carlist) Rieekan and General (Maximillian) Veers are without their first names. This also bugged me back when General Jan Dodonna got his EU first name but Admiral (Kendal) Ozzel didn't.

Inigo_Montoya
10-18-2005, 05:09 PM
Look at the lengths of their names (it does suck though)
Major Bren Derlin
General Jan Dodonna
Admiral Kendal Ozzel
General Carlist Rieekan
General Maximillian Veers

Apparently nineteen spots is the cutoff line.
So close, Kendal...

I always loved that vintage figure! Inigo, I believe that pic there was the character based on the trench troop that yelled to attack the felled AT-AT, and not Derlin. The Saga Hoth Trooper is more like this vintage fig than the new Derlin, due to the white uniform as opposed to the brown vests.

I understand what you mean by that. OTOH, if that's the case, he shouldn't be a hard find. My only concern is if Hasbro will handle 'secondary characters' distribution as they are currently doing with Collection 2 cases for ROTS. While I predict Derlin himelf will be an easy find, some secondary Saga character for 2006 potentially WILL be.

Well Major Bren Derlin is a boring character period because he didn't do anything exciting on screen that made us go wow at him like so many other characters. Knee articulation would've been nice but not really needed since he doesn't really sit. Definately getting him. I have been wanting a figure of Cliff for a long time. A nice background figure plus he has a brown coat. They are reluctant to make a brown coated soldier so at least this helps break up the white soldiers a bit. Of course you could get a whole army of brown coated Lukes I suppose.

Billy_Ray
12-02-2005, 09:22 PM
Man, this is an awesome figure!

I don't get it? There is so much outrcry for other background characters that had less screen time than Derlin (Tonikka Sisters, various other Cantina and Jabba's Palace characters, and (for God's sake why?) the Ice Cream Maker Guy). What makes them less boring? This guy even had lines in the movie. Oh well, I guess everyone can't be happy, but this looks like a great figure, a much needed background type Rebel officer, and darnit, it's Cliff. Put me down for one.

Daigo_Bah
12-02-2005, 10:22 PM
Yeah, Billy- 9 times out of 10 I'd rather a human background character over an alien. Maybe it's just me, but it's Star WARS, with soldiers.

I haven't picked up any 3-3/4" figs in a long time, but Major "Clavin" here is going to be a must-have when I spot him in the stores. I think the likeness is dead-on perfect.

Did you know that the name Derlin is of Celtic background, which incidentally is also the name of the man who invented the first action figure making process, also known as Kennersculpting which in turn was where the name of the first SW action figure company "Kenner" originated? With the love that the Imperials get on Hoth, I'm glad that Derlin is here to stay. He looks great, but there needs to be more Hoth Rebels--
See Torryn Farr in the fan's choice sweepstakes--more Rebel pilots (Janson, Dakk) and ground troops. Mon Mothma's kid--according to Star Wars Visionaries--was the very Rebel who broadcasted "Imperial Troops have entered the base..." I am very happy for this figure.

they really need to make a new rebel and imperial soldier too because they both kind of are weak. That last rebel was funny looking and short. I'd take new ones of those though, but it look s like the snowtrooper will be a reused figure and parts this year.

Picked him up today and he's fine for what he is, a bit character with minimal lines - basically diorama filler. The articulation is adequate; knee articulation would be a waste because the figure's tunic is very rigid at the waist and prevents even his legs from moving at the hips.

Supposedly, the likeness between the 2 is very similar perhaps Kenner just thought it would be better to market the character as a generic figure instead?

Do you use the Vintage/Modern Trading & Classifieds section in the forum? Make sure your feedback thread has been added to the Trade Feedback Thread Index (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=7&Number=1427163)!

The Tri-logo card used a slightly larger picture, and in it, you can clearly see Derlin standing profile. In fact, he's the guy standing mosty out of frame, frame right in the US release.

I literaly just opened mine. My only gripe is that rinky [censored] blaster. Otherwise, great figure.

meh. i dont think i want this one. he didnt do anything in the movies and he's a boring figure. thankfully hasbro didnt waste precious articulation points on him, though they should have given him as many POAs as a vintage figure. good sculpt, nothing great about him though. not like he'd be that fun to play with

It's not that, they're shipping him and Reekin with the tiny blasters that came with the blockade runner troopers. Funny thing is, both of their hands are too small to hold them. Don't know why the couldn't have shipped them with the Gold leader blasters, they fit perfectly.

I picked up Derlin today, and its a decent figure, but nothing great - glad Hasbro made him though - the body can easily be reused if they make another Hoth commander or something...it would have been nice if he came with a cool accessory, since its sort of a boring figure. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It's small and loose in his hand. He holds a nice two-handed pose though. Fits the holster well. The POTJ Rebel Trooper version of this blaster fits his gun hand better. Also, I noticed his left hand holds the scanner that came with K-3PO beautifully.

No, the blaster is too small. They should have used the larger sized blasters that came with Antillies and Donna. It seems those are the blasters his hand was sculpted for.

Picked him up this morning. He and Veers were the only two Hoth-wavers that I wanted. He's great. Fantastic likeness. His blaster is a little loose in his hand, but I keep it in the holster anyway. But without it, his hand is in a great pointing pose, like he's about to tell you a bit of useless trivia over a drink. I think he's a great purchase, and this is from someone that usually shuns background characters.

The ESB Radio Drama reveals that Derlin was part of Solo's strike team. In ROTJ, you can see a few faces on some of the strike team members, so although Ratzenberger himself was not cast in ROTJ, any facial resemblence to close to him could pass off as Derlin in ROTJ.

Lord_Atmo

i may have seen him in ROTJ. either him or someone who looks just like him.

the figure's pretty nice for the most part. my only gripe is that he wasnt packed with any interesting acessory. because it does kinda make him... boring. great sculpt though. maybe if his helmet was removable....

Deak_Starkiller
01-31-2006, 11:48 AM
In the scene from ROTJ when Solo tells one of the commandos to take the rest of the squad ahead, that could have been Derlin (as him possibly being in the next chain of command). In the radio drama, Derlin is also one of the small group of commandos that follow Solo and company all the way inside the bunker.

already problems with the paint? i agree with Derlin being meh. i mean, i can see the Derlin fans crapping themselves after first laying eyes on this figure, but i dunno yet if i want him. i like the sculpt, i like the articulation, but the accessories.....eh... kinda lacking. i always thought hasbro would be able to sell more figures if they packed something interesting in with the less significant characters with parts as minor as Derlin's.

the one thing i like though is that i can display him saying "the shield doors MUST be closed!". the swivel elbows work really well with figures like these since it lets them put their arms behind their back.

he's so-so. definately. i might get him... after i find a damn Veers.....

I'm sorry to hear about your figure not coming with his moustache, defeats the purpose of even buying him. As far as accesories what more could you want http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/confused.gif? A beard trimmer? A camaro? Still contemplating a purchase on this one.

another hoth console. not one as huge as the one the original Riekan came with, but a smaller, simple one.

sucks that his 'stache wasnt painted. the 'stache really adds character to him. but i'm sure it was a simple paint machine screw-up and probably wont be too common.

i'm astonished on how detailed the sculpt on the boots is. i'd go as far as to even calling that a work of art. this figure is definately one of the better ones. even though he's meh. i like the working holster too

Yes, his uniform is a tanish color vs. the foot soldiers shown during the battle scenes were wearing off-white. There are a ton of variants if you watch the hangar scenes carefully, tan vest with a off-white undercoat, etc.

There are 37 Cliff Clavins hanging up at the local Walmart. Him and Rieekan (And Veers to an extent) are really clogging the pegs there. When they got a few cases of Geo, they had to attach a little rack on the edge of the aisle. Then they got a few more cases of Hoth. Now Cliffy, Rieekan, and Veers are clogging both. XD I think it was a neat idea to make Derlin, but it seems he has been really overshipped.
