View Full Version : SSC 1:4 Scale Luke Skywalker part 1

A friend of mine was kind enough to order me this statue and pick it up, and then ship it to me here in New York. Once I knew that he had his order placed, I cancelled my order for the regular version. It arrived yesterday, and I was able to open it up last night.

All I can say s WOW!!!!!

I knew that it came with extra accessories (the poncho, hat and goggles) but I didnít know that the right hand would be in a different position, and that the Luke would be holding the binoculars.

The one thing that has bothered me with this statue since I saw the first photos was the position of the right hand, it always looked to big to be, but on the SDCC version it is positioned differently and it looks so much better (to my eyes anyway)

EDIT: Title changed to streamline the multiple threads. This is now the official thread for this piece. All other threads still exist, but we ask that all additional discussions continue in this thread. -admin

The first thing I noticed about this statue when I saw it online was that the hand doesn't touch the knee. To me, it takes away the feeling of the weight he's putting on his front part of the body to lean forward. Why would it have been done this way? Are Sideshow statues cast in a single piece? I can only imagine that they did it this way so they could fit the clothes on. Who knows?

Woah! His face looks awfully creepy. Do all of them look like this?

I had seen it at Toy Fair and C3 and wasn't too happy with how his face looked but at least it didn't look creepy.

Why is Luke wearing lipstick and eyeliner? Get a little too bored at the Lars homestead? Perhaps the Tatooine heat is getting to him?

And those eyebrows, oh my god the eyebrows. Abe Vigoda be damned...

I dont mean any disrespect to anyone who has or intends to purchase this statue and I know I will probably be marched down the road and spat on by children for saying this. I really cant say I like one thing about this statue, Does anyone think it actually looks like Luke? Even the body is all wrong and dont get me started on the pose it all just looks wrong.

Just my opinion I dont want to bum anyone out http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

well, character likeness is in the eye of the beholder really...I have heard the same debate over some of the Attakus statues over the last 2 years.

I have the Han Solo and Chewbacca Attakus statues, and I love them...problem is that they don't photograph very well, so they really need to be seen in person to be appreciated.

The same is true with the SS Luke. In person, I think he is a dead on likeness to Luke...these pictures just dont do it justice.

I think all the comments are because the photos don't make him justice... the likeness is well done, the eyebrows and eyes are fine and the pose is very natural IMO.

I have the statue and I have to say that in person, it looks a lot much better than the photos that were posted. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Just like the Gentle Giant statues & busts, it is hard to photograph how nice these collectibles are. I am much happier with the SideShow Luke than expected, and really looking forward to the rest of the line. Have high hopes for the new SW 12" collection, too! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The face? Uh. the hell is up with that? He looks like a Rocky Horror Show reject. Worse, that may be the makeup application used on Mark in the Star Wars Christmas Special.

Either way, that is very bad. The rest is perfect, but the face would keep me from owning it. Hopefully their next attempts will be good.

Those eyebrows remind me of...anybody ever seen that little 80's horror/adventure spoof comedy: Hysteria? "What difference does it make?"

No. Didn't really think so, but if you had, that's what you would think of when you look at Luke's face.

FYI, they vary a LOT from figure to figure. Some have horrible paint jobs around the eyes/face and others look great. Sideshow really needs to get things under control because I have had seen a lot of "bad paint jobs" lately from their China workers......

I'm not picking on anyone or saying I'm perfect, but this thread has some of the worst grammar I've seen in quite some time... which I find quite hilarious.

And I agree. Lighting can really mess with a collectible's "look".

I recently purchased GG's Vader statue and had him on display in only one room for a few weeks. I moved him to another room to show a friend and it actually looked much better under different lighting conditions. And Vader is pretty much all black so it's easy to see how lighting can mess with flesh-tone.

No disrespect, but these pics are Luke. I do not want to rain on your parade Hideous, but yours looks like Tim Curry in the Rocky Horror Picture show. I know flash and such can take away from a picture. However, it doesn't affect it that much. Your statue's "artist" went way overboard on the eye brows. If you are fine with that, then thats all that matters. However, I would be demanding a replacement.

DOH... here's hoping my SDCC Ultimate Hellboy isn't in drag when he arrives Wednesday http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree with DouglasMc,

Your China painter went a little crazy on Luke. I would return him and hope for a better paint job. I have my 3rd and 4th Luke coming this week, there were just too many problems with my first two. Hopefully I will finally get a good one.

Personally i think its sad that they can promote these items then sell almost a different one visually. It seems more a hit and miss on whether yours is a good likeness or not.

I know its the old battle with what company is churning out the
best ones but i think i will stick with Attakus line as they seem to be a much more solid item than an overglorified doll.

Who knows the same problems may occur with the ben kenobi. Overproduced cheap items manifactured in China... Yippeee

well, the original point of my post at the beginning of this thead was to point out the difference between the pose of the standard editionand the pose of the SDCC edition. Now that picture of both have been posted...any thoughts??

And for the record...regardless of what anyone has said, I am very happy with the paint application on my Luke...my pictures are awful and do not do it justice, and the flash has made it look 50 times worse than it looks in person.

Hideous, please do not take this the wrong way, but are you sure you are not suffering buyers' remorse? I do not mean to talk down to you or insult you in any way. Its just some people want to like something they invested their money in so much, they convince themselves that its better than it is. Now, as I have said, it was your money, so your opinion is the only that matters. But I am starting to worry about the Obi Wan I pre-purchased (Vader should be fine due to lack of facial sculpting). Could you post some new pics when you get the chance so that we can see it at a better angle? That way, we can see what you are talking about. Thanks and enjoy your item.

I am sure he is happy with it. It does look great in person and no other Luke statue is as nice as this piece. Kenobi looks even better so I would not worry about anything.

Take some pictures of it without the flash though. I am curious to see if your paint job is really that bad. Again, no offense, I have had 2 bad ones already....

Darth_Hideous
07-26-2005, 05:54 PM
I am out of town until Friday, but I will take better pics this weekend and post them.

I am NOT suffering buyersí remorse, I actually love this piece (I guess some people find that hard to believe, but that doesn't bother me).

I was really interested in people opinions regarding the posing of the right hand between the two versions of the statue...ironically, that is something that in all of these posts, no one has commented on http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For the record, I am someone who tends to be very critical of the items I purchase, I am not one of these guys who loves everything. That being said, I have seen the debates rage between those who prefer Attakus vs. those who prefer Gentle Giant...and the outcome is always the same. These things are very subjective. It is a good thing that there are so many different companies making these types of pieces, because no one company has been able to please everyone.

I have the Han Solo, Obi Wan and Vader statues pre-ordered from Sideshow, and after receiving the Luke I am anxiously awaiting each of them.

Sideshow always seems to go monkeys on eyebrows for some reason. They are too thick. In some pictures of this bust Luke seems to have two bushy Tatooine caterpillars resting on his forehead. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Also, the belt could be a lot better. In some pictures it is place way up to high. If I remember correctly, it is hanging loose in the ANH.
P.S.: Eyebrows are extremely important and have to look right. Their importance is right up their with properly painted eyes.

I reaaalllyyy wouldn't say this is the case, many of us who have posted our views on this statue collect not just the busts and statues but also the props (which are way more expensive) and its not really the price of a piece that real collectors collect for, its the QUALITY. Quality will always sell a product regardless of cost and you making those assumptions is very unfounded. You would do better by actually getting to know the people who made the posts (myself included)before you determine who cannot afford to collect. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think the right hand's pose looks better on yours.

Also please don't feel I and others are criticising your purchase, what you spend your hard earned cash on is totally down to you and I am sure lots of people wouldn't like some of my collection. This is just the type of thing that gets discussed on a forum and it takes all different kinds of views to make a forum work. Would be a bit boring if we all thought the same http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif. I know when im buying a statue, prop or bust I like to read a range of comments about the piece. That way I find out the good and bad points of any article before I decide to buy or not.

You're making an awfully general assumption if you are implying that cost is the reason we are making fun of this figure. You have no evidence to support your claim (at least on this thread). I on the other hand have much evidence to support my position that people are making light of this figure because he looks like Unibrow's stunt double from Austin Powers.

I for one find his face hidious, and don't want to scare my child with it. The sideshow Grievous now, there is something I can deal with, which is why it's on preorder.

Well, I did not notice the difference in the hand between versions, and now that you've pointed it out, I'm glad I have a SDCC version coming. I actually have both versions, but was waiting to determine which one I am going to get rid of.

When the first pictures of this item came out, I was worried about the likeness of the face. I have collected the LOTR statues from Sideshow for years, and some likenesses are great, and others are horrible (e.g., Gandalf = good, Arwen = horrible).

Then after samples started showing up at cons and other places, a lot of people have been saying the likeness is much better than the original photos - so I started to feel better about the purchase.

Now I'm worried again http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As a collector of high end items, this piece is a must have. It looks even better in person...assuming you get one with a good paint job!

Nice job Gruson. Now I'm really worried what mine is going to look like.....

Is it the SDCC version? If so are you happy with the poncho/hat. I say if you're not a fan of the outfit you can still display it without, right?

I just got my Comicon Sideshow Luke from a fellow Scummer (THANKS GUNNER!). All I can say is AMAZING!! It is so realistic it is creepy. I was surprised at how much better it looks in person than in pictures. It is HEAVY too---very well made, well worth the price. The packaging was quite impressive as well. I am really loooking forward to my Vader and Obi Wan now. If one can afford it, I definately recommend the Luke piece!

Hey, just got an Exclusive PF Luke, and although I didn't think I would like it, I really love it. The binoculars in the hand is a huge improvement over just the weird claw hand of the regular edition. The face definitely has a high creep factor, especially with flash photography, but in regular light he looks great. Highly underrated piece, especially at the price you can get him now.

The face is great, but his legs are still too short from what I've seen.

Who knows?

I know what you mean, that bothered me along with the position of the premium format Han's hands. I don't think most people realize that Sideshow made it so you can actually bend the arms into place and position them correctly. Luke's arm can be bent so that it will touch the knee. Han's right hand can be postion to hold his gun in the holster correctly and his left hand can be positioned on his belt. They have the same kind of bendy arms as the premium format Freddy.

Just be sure to use slow and steady pressure, and just move them a little at a time.

Well, I got my Luke yesterday and I am very happy with it. I have it on a coner of my Detolf looking toward anyone who enters the living room.

Another great job by SideShow. Now to get that Leia.

Tatooine Luke is most people's least favorite among the PFs, mine as well, however it still rocks! As a general rule, they just seem to keep getting better, raising the bar further away from the original. At $106 shipped, that's a great dealand what better way to start your PF collection than with the first one that SS produced.

Welcome to the other side.

Congrats on your first PF statue from sideshow and at a great price.
Even though this is your first, I assure you it won't be your last. I have the Luke as well and while it may not be the their best work, it is a unique piece in it's own way.

You will not be disappointed, Mike. It was my frist PF as well, and I thought it was just amazing. It got me into PFs, and now I have the whole set to date, they are true centerpieces.

After a long long wait, I finally picked one up for $100. It's a great and iconic statue.
