As Antifreeze pointed out, I think we need an offical thread specifically to answer and inform our Scummer brethren about the joy that is Star Wars Sideshow, GG, and Attakus.

Comtemplate, deliberate, educate here about all things bust/statue.

It seems to me that many of us are growing out of the hasbro action figure realm and instead focusing on higher-end collectables. Its a natural evolution. So, if you have a question, comment, review, collection photos of the above companies' Star Wars line, post it here in all it's glory.

If the idea of this thread totally sucks, then just let it die. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I switched over to "high end" collectibles years ago.

For Star Wars, I finally decided to only collect the Sideshow 1/4 line. These pieces are incredible in person.

At one time, I had some GG busts and around 10 of the Attakus statues.

For me at least, I would rank Sideshow's line #1, Attakus statues #2, and GG #3.

Sideshow seems to be the best at making human characters' faces as well.

The new Kenobi looks incredible, as do the updated Vader pictures.

This is THE line to collect IMO. They really are museum quality pieces. I have since sold all my GG busts and most of my Attakus statues.

Seriously. That shot of Luke and Han, especially that Luke is like a mini-me Skywalker.

I can't wait to get my SS Luke, it arrives on Tuesday! I agree with Gruson's rankings though in the sense that SS looks to have waaaay better looking facial sculpts on their statues for the human characters. I have a few attakus pieces and more on the way and I just love their size, attention to detail, and poses. GG's stuff looks like toys compared to SS and attakus' statues.

Sideshow-Very good with facial, size but not price..not sure what will happen in long run as the statue uses some cloth. But what's up with exclusive edition, regular edition and convention edition. What edition next after those were sold out! If you collect for investment don't buy this line!

GentleGiant-Very Cheap and mass produce. Affordable for their mini bust line. Biker scout and stormtrooper dewback very nice line, Vader is ok. C3PO looks like plastic!

Attakus-Not so good with facial! Pricy but very good collectible policy and they don't mass produce and reintroduce with another edition. They do produce same character but totaly different design.

Well, my money is with GG. Probably because the don't want as much of it.

Sideshow has done very little thus far. I don't care for their Han but the other 3 are pure gold. Grievous, though is the best product, imo, out of all 3 companies.

Attakus. I simply dislike much of their line. Their stormtrooper and threepio are crap. But the prices. My God man, the prices. Their next series looks promising but they sure have had some blunders like bobble-head Ben Kenobi.

Gentle Giant. They have 4 lines out now(5 if they ever do their helmets) and I can think of 2 pieces that I've had a lukewarm response to. That's it.

Percentage-wise, I've liked more of GG's products.

Nope. But I've seen them in person and online.

Marmit and Kotobukiya have produced better stormies than attakus.

That's a good idea. Those of you that have a few collections of each, maybe post a couple pictures with a mixture so the rest of us who really can't afford sideshow or Attakus can get a sence of scale and quality.

The scale of sideshow's stuff is quite impressive.

I've seen the full size GG busts and was surprised how cool they looked, but I'm not a big fan of busts so I never picked any up. I've been tempted to pick up an Attakus clone trooper as I think its one of the best I've seen from them, but for some reason I just didnt really want to spend that much on it, however the SS Grievous was so impressive it became my first collectible of that kind, the detail is great and the scale somewhat makes up for the price, I would consider SS stuff to be more along the lines of fine art. Impressive....

Well for SS..Exclusive Edition and Convention Edition are pretty much the same..since their Luke never had the exclusive edition before the convention edition.

Also they don't change the numbers after the production..for ex if they say 2500 for Vader..500 of these are exclusives..and 2000 are standard editions..so does this mean that they play with the numbers?

Personally my favorite is the SS 1/4 line..I have 5 statues from them Pre-Order..and with my exclusive Luke arriving after SDCC..I can't wait!

The only real downside to Sideshow pieces (other than the price tag) is having enough room to display them in all their glory.

Heck, I'd feel like my apartment, which is pretty nice, would be unworthy of the SS General Grievous. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Totally agree...I have a whole room available for my collection, but have no good way to display SS pieces...just too darn big...

I added my name to the Vader "reserve" list last week. Any chance I will actually get one... I doubt it. The problem with Sideshow is they sell the things before they are even complete. That Luke looked horrendous when the item went up for sell. Now, it does indeed look life-like. The same thing with Vader. The early pics were off for lack of a better description.. and his stance looked horrible. Now, that they have actually made it look worth 400 bucks, its probably impossible to find (at retail.. and I refuse to give someone on eBay twice the price for it). My hope is that they have set a pattern with the Obi vs. Vader. I am pretty sure they will make Boba Fett next. And then maybe a stormtrooper. But, MAYBE... just maybe.. in a few years, they can make a Return of the Jedi Vader and Jedi Luke to pose just like the ANH Obi and Vader. The demand for another Vader would be great (sorry, many people who would buy one for 350 would not spend 900 or more), and a ROTJ Vader would be different enough to warrant another go.. well, I can dream.

P.S. And if they decide to make a Hoth Han or Dagobah Luke (sideshow exclusive Yoda in Backpack.. it would sell out in 30 minutes... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif) I am all over those 2. These items are so expensive, I know I could never afford to be a completist. So I plan to be very picky.

Well, I guess she is the next logical choice.

I wonder if they'll do a Chewie. Would they use sculpted hair?

BactaReality
07-10-2005, 12:19 AM
Well, they sculpt lukes and hans hair, and really the only way to keep it a precise piece of art is to keep it solid.

Mixed media statues su@@. All Sideshow mixed media pieces looks like expensive dolls. No thanks. Attakus makes the best Vaders. I would rank :

1- Attakus
2- Gentle Giant
3- SideShow

I Like them all! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Each line has so much to appreciate.

The price of the Attakus pieces has kept me from collecting any of their statues yet, but they are very impressive. Am watching the diorama protos very closely, think that may be my first Attakus purchase.

I have ordered all of the SideShow SW pieces, and collect most of the SW Gentle Giant line. (I don't buy the CW maquettes) The GG stuff is my favorite, but the SS pieces have not arrived yet.

After years of slaving to Hasbro product that I will never have room to display, all of these lines have brought the fun and pride back to my collection.

Well, I quess I'll jump into this thread. I'm a GG person myself. Thta's only for two reasons though. It's the first line to catch my attention when I decided to go high end collectables, and the price of the others keep me away. Though that may change soon. I don't think I'll ever go with SS, but that's only because I like full body casts (clothes and all). Getting into Attukus is just a matter of finding the right piece for me at the right price. My other delima is that I've been hanging around the prop replica forum too much lately. If you've ever been over there, then you know what kind of money it takes to get into that, but that's another thread and another time.

Final thoughts; collect what you enjoy, and enjoy what you collect. No matter what line it comes from

http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif Agreed. Except, soon, all these statues and bust will take up more room than the little hasbro figures, and you'll be in the same situation.

room, thats a great point That is the number one reason I'm getting out of the Hasbro rat-race....too much stuff and I can't display it all (without my room looking like a cluttered junk heap). The statues give a nice look to my displays that I can actually let normal people see... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I couldn't have said it better myself. I used to do action figures. I'd spend all day going from store to store trying to find that one special figure. No more. Not to mention the display value. Like you, I would get weird looks when I showed off my figure collection. "You're 25 years old and you buy toys?" they would say. They just didn't understand. Now when I show them my statues, I get responses like, "Wow, that's just amazing!" I don't think it matters what line you collect from, they all give the WOW! effect.

So, with that said, does anyone want to buy 250+ Star Trek figures?

I recently just started collecting the higher collectibles than Hasbro not to long ago. I went with GG, because like others have said they are not as expensive as Sideshow, and Attakus. I am one of those really picky character choosers. i've viewed the Attakus site, and only a few of the statues impressed me. Most of Sideshow's are awesome, but way to expensive for me to even try to get my hands on one. Rite now one of my favorite statues is the GG Scout trooper with bike. I just love this piece, and still trying to figure out how I am going to get my hands on one. I'll admit I am an extreme Hasbro collector, cause I love to be able to get more items of different characters, and vehicles. If I even had the funds I wouldn't mind having a few Code 3 items to go with my vehicle collection.....

Agreed. I just managed to get the Sandtrooper Dewback GG statue. I must say (aside from my 12backs) its the highlight of my collection and the most impressive statue of any line (ok, except for the SS stuff). From the looks of the biker scout statue it could rival the dewback!

ump

i think the Sandtrooper Dewback GG statue is the best statue from GG statue line, only limited to 1500,hope GG will make more statues like this one. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif
