Rate the CGI Character - Week 8 – Jar Jar Binks (EP1)

After a long break, we continue the segment this week with the goofy, strange and annoying Jar-Jar Binks.

Some points that can be discussed include:

1. How convincing is he/she?
2. What is your favorite performance from this character?
3. What is your least favorite performance from this character?

Where does one begin when talking about poor old Jar Jar? He’s a very…unique addition to the Star Wars saga. He is the first lead role to be done completely in CGI in any Star Wars film. He is also the first character to provide constant Three Stooges style humor.

Unfortunetely, this is not something I wanted to see in Star Wars! Sure he may have been a vital role in both TPM and AOTC, but the nonsensical style of Jar Jar is not my cup of tea. I guess it’s a good thing that I am just rating the CGI part of the character!

Jar Jar looks pretty good in the film in terms of realism. He fits well in most scenes and his movements are natural for the most part. The one thing I dislike about him is that the characters he interacts with don’t always look like they are staring straight in his eyes – a common problem with CGI characters interacting with humans.

My favorite scene with Jar Jar is any one scene in which he doesn’t speak or break anything. I am not sure if such a scene exists, but I’m sure one can edit several seconds of footage together to create a full few minutes of sanity. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My least favorite scenes include the one in which he swims, the one where he juggles and the one – make that two - where he gets hit in the crotch. Those scenes are very unrealistic and detract from the character overall.

I give Jar-Jar 6 out of 10. He’s not a terrible CGI character but he has so many scenes that have me saying “Get this stupid cartoon character out of Star Wars!”

What do you think of the EP1 Jar Jar Binks?

I assume that Lucas decided to go with a CG character, when he discovered that Stepn Fetchit was not available for the movie. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Its hard for me to find something positive to say, here. Even as a CG character, he has problems. I would think that if you're trying to give a CG character a major role, giving him a herky-jerky walk isn't the best choice, since it detracts from the perceived realness of the character. Also, eye contact between Jar Jar and live actors was frequently a problem.

And as a character, he's just plain stupid. There was comic value to C3PO's complaining, and Han is just plain hilarious, especially in ANH on the DS. Jar Jar doesn't get many funny lines, with the "My give up." in response to Tarpals "Never give up" speech being the only exception.

Does anybody in the PT have any genuinely funny lines besides Obi-Wan? Though I think that his "the negotations were short" crack was totally inappropriate seeing that their transport crew had just been slaughtered. But I digress...

For me, Jar Jar is the embodiment of what is wrong with the PT: bad dialogue, stupid humor, and too much dependance on CG.

I agree wholeheartedly here. This character is not believable at all, is not important to the story whatsoever (except as a liason between the Alliance and Naboo) which I would like to think would happen regardless, but maybe not..

The entire PT suffers from the problem you speak of with CG characters not looking "realistic" whatsoever. We have beat this subject like a dead horse, but still, it's worth mentioning. I also agree that his humor is lame. The PT is missing that sarcastic Han-type character. Too late for that I suppose.. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Too bad Lucas didn't allow Anakin to be an older, more sarcastic character. I cannot understand why he broke formula with 3PO and R2. He had always said that they would be the common thread throughout the saga, but they've only been together for about half a movie in the PT. And 3PO's humor in AOTC is a shadow of his OT humor. Maybe when they wipe his memory, the install a better sense of humor.

That's absolutely hilarious! Thanks for the laugh bjlevine.

But seriously, I think Jar Jar was a pretty well done CGI character besides the fact that I can't stand him. My favorite so far has to be Gollum form LOTR though.

Gollum looked very real, didn't he. Must be the technique they used to map the actor's motions. At first, I kinda thought they did him a little too dark, but then I realized that I was being skewed by Ralph Bakshi's interpretation, which was much more comical, rather than by the books.

Gollum is definitely the best CGI character I've ever seen. The way they captured his motions through the sensors attached to Andy Serkis' body worked very well, and the sound is great because it really isn't a voiceover... I love it!

Jar-Jar was a breakthrough in terms of CGI, not matter how you look at it. Something like that had never been done with such a major character before. I found his performance believable...highly annoying, of course, but believable http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif. The only real fault with his look was the clothes; ILM was far from perfection in dealing with clothes back then. Overall, I give 7/10.

I'd say his clothes look more realistic than his skin.

He was a breakthrough development certainly, but by looking you can alway tell he is CG, Gollum looks real, the Dino's of JP look real, Jarjar, not so much.

I look at the picture on the top, and I can't deny he looks pretty damned photo-realistic.

ALL CGI characters have moments of unflawlessness, even JP and Gollum, as great as his characterization was.

Yeah, there is something about living, real things that is still hard to capture artificially. And just as its easier to paint still life than portraits (and make them look real), its also true of CG. To my eye, I can still tell a physical model from a CG one.

As much as you have to hate the character, the effect is incredible. First of it's kind really, so you have t give it a 9 or better in terms ot technology/visual asthetics. However, the use of the character storywise is unforgiveable and that deserves about a 1.

I would hardly call it first of its kind. James Cameron and others had been working with the technology for years, and while the CG may not be as sophisticated, you have to say that the T-1000 in Terminator 2 was very effective as a character, something you really can't say about Jar Jar.

10/ 10.

That poor character doesn't get the respect he should deserve. He is an amazing work of CGI: Rewatch the first scene with him. As he follows Qui-Gon through the forrest the light that shines through the leaves reflects on his body. Great work! The interactions are great as well.

The only thing that bothered me was when Jar Jar got kicked in the croth by a Pit Droid. This is really stupid and it doesn't fit the humor at all.

Lessee...Jar Jar steps in crap, Jar Jar gets his tongue pulled, Jar Jar gets his tongue zapped. Seems to fit just fine.

Exactly ... and actually, I think I laughed more at the Pit Droid nailing Jar Jar in the nuts than I did at any of his other "comical" moments.

I think that the only reason to play the new SW game is to blast Eowks and Gungans. Driving an AT-AT is cake. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Always good to see bad characters nailed in the family jewels. Do Gungans have *********? hmmm.. I couldn't find that in the databank... http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They do, but if you were to ask Jar Jar about them, he'd refer to them as, "Mesa ballsack".
