Sideshow and Nerdist announced a contest to give away a life size R2. The summary on the contest page indicates it will be available next summer and the price will be "over $6,000".

Hadn't they already made a 1:1 R2?

Yes, I own #7 of 250. By the description and price it sounds like they are just re-issuing these again. I'll wait to see it at SDCC to see if there is any real difference between them.

Was this not being pegged as the most advanced R2 to date?

I haven't visually seen it yet, but their written description of it is a dead ringer for their original release that I own. If it really is improved great for those who don't have one yet, if it is nothing more than a rehash of their existing limited edition, well they have been doing that a lot also.

Forgive me, the write-up says "most accurate" not "most advanced." Here's the link: http://nerdist.com/win-a-life-size-r2-d2-from-sideshow-collectibles-and-nerdist/

Re-issuing, it looks just like mine from the posted images. I'll see it in person on Thursday.

This was SDCC on July-27-2007 when R2 was introduced last time. Mine is the ANH version, maybe they are calling the new release the TFA version.

Funny they should introduce this today. I just published a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WcUO5BmH0w) about my project to 3D print a life-sized R2-D2. I just have the dome finished at the moment, but it should only cost a tiny fraction of what Sideshow wants. (I had their life-sized C-3PO, but wasn't too impressed with the overall quality for the very high price. I eventually sold it after having a number of issues.)

Whether a re-issue or not, it's beautiful. I hope I win the contest!

Whether a re-issue or not, it's beautiful. I hope I win the contest! It does look nice, it is just another blatant re-issue of one of their previous very high cost 'Limited Edition' of 250 that I already purchased the first time (#7). If I did not already own one, I would purchase one. I'm annoyed that they are just re-issuing the same items, over and over and over.

How are they justifying rereleasing it?

Shadow

How are they justifying rereleasing it?Everything is identical from the first release, the only difference this time around is they moved the sound speaker from the dome to behind the top vent in the main body and the parts painted silver on ours are now silver metal plated. Cost is the same, so they are re-hashing because they can.

Shadow, would be proud to have the original and such a low edition #. Yours is a beautiful piece.

There is something not right about the R2 in the pic.... just cant put my finger on it but whatever it is... it makes me not love it.

I think it's the color blue it's painted in... it's too light... needs to be a shade darker for it to look right!

It does look off, but it could just be the lighting.

Its the shade of blue... here's the real color:

I did a lot of research and experimenting when painting my own dome, so I know a thing or two about R2's blue. And yes, in ANH it really is quite a dark purplish blue that can look almost black in certain light. They did change the way they painted it after a while, though, and in the prequels in particular it sometimes looked a lot lighter and brighter.

It does look quite off in the photo above, but we can't really make any judgements based only on that. As I said, the light may have been affecting things, and it also looks like the saturation has been boosted.

Sideshow's site mentions a new sculpt. Is this the same body they used last go 'round? If so, that body was too long. R2 looked like he needed to go on a diet.

I can see things they have cosmetically changed, but by and large, NO it is the same base unit under it all. At $7450 it's about a $2k increase over what I paid for mine at retail.

This R2 is amazing but so far out of most collectors range. I wish the busts would start up again. They were priced high too but it was possible.

With everything going up in price (retail price that is), it's so hard to pull the trigger lately.

The price on this in insanity. I don't see how any average collector can afford it. Even the Legendary Scale is a ridiculous price.

Mighty_Jabba

Sideshow is really courting the very rich at this point. I mean, the life sized pieces were always very expensive, but before they were sort of doable as a long-term goal for someone with an average income. I think that may no longer be the case.

This is typical Sideshow, they release a 'Limited Edition-when it's gone it's gone' run - then a few years later make a few minor cosmetic changes and then re-release, pulling the rug from under all those customers who put their trust in them.

Really shady business practices.

Cheers

Jez, I agree 100%. I saw where sideshow is re-releasing premium format R2 and 3PO as well. Definitely a slap in the face for people that bought-in thinking they were getting a unique, one-of-a-kind collectible.

So I recently ordered one of these and it should ship in a couple days. When it arrives and I have it assembled, I will take some pics, so we can see how the production unit actually looks and handles... :)

You can't pose him with the third leg retracted and standing vertical, can you?

That's certainly true, although it's almost more of a lifestyle choice than anything given the amount of work that is involved. I'm actually kind of surprised there isn't a cheaper option for an off-the-shelf life size droid at this point.

Based on my limited knowledge, this is likely good advice. The question becomes how many hours are we talking to build something like this?

I spent a good amount of time as a kid trying to build my own R2 unit and Stormtrooper Armor. I thought I could do it with Paper Mache but never turned out right. I can't imagine what my 10 year old self would have thought about this. As with most people who get this , I think owning one would literally be fulfilling a childhood dream!

Building an R2 is basically a hobby unto itself. So yes, if you factor in the time spent plus the materials, you're probably spending a lot more than Sideshow is asking. But then again, building it is really half the fun for many people. In terms of just the materials, you can build an R2 for WAY less than what Sideshow is asking, but the time it takes to figure out what you're doing and then actually do it is considerable.

I own the original Sideshow 1:1 R2 because I know that I have neither the skill set or time to build one myself, and the R2 builders have a code that they will not sell a finished unit.

For me this discussion is similar to building your own custom car. I know for a fact there are people who do that themselves for a hobby or business, i'm just not inclined myself, so I buy my cars ready made from the car dealers.

I got my R2 unit today, the family went nuts they loved it. The photos don't do the base justice, I feel like I have a piece of the Millennium Falcon in my living room. R2 is bigger than you think. It is expensive but worth it. If your on the fence, you won't regret it.
On my box it says edition 130. Wonder how many they made this run.
