View Full Version : Life-Size Jumbo Vintage Kenner Stormtrooper Statue

Chris Wyman
07-17-2013, 04:06 PM
This Stormtrooper is the first in a whole series of new Life-size statues. It's articulated just like the original vintage figure and is made of fiberglass with a removable blaster. Darth Vader will be coming as well complete with a vinyl cape and telescoping lightsaber! These will ship assembled in a crate.

Cool...but crazy.

Curious that there's a "series" and I wonder what that entails. There simply can't be a market for them to make more than a handful... not enough people have the space. I could probably talk myself into a Vader and Stormy and definitely an R2 if the price is right. But even then... probably could only swing one of the three just due to space limitations.

Can they just make the weapons? :)

The short list I would consider:

Stormtrooper
Artoo Detoo

And, of course, a scaled, motorized Patrol Dewback to drive to work.

I was thinking the same thing! Obviously not all of them--nobody(?) needs a General Madine baton--but a handful of the most iconic weapons would be mind-blowing...the "Han" blaster, Rebel Blaster, Imperial Blaster, the lightsabers, and maybe Chewie's bowcaster.

And speaking of Chewie, that's who I wouldn't be able to say "no" to in this life-size series.

I think price is going to prohibit me from getting 2, 1 for each side of the TV. As long as the price is realistic I will buy 1 Stormtrooper and hopefully they make more so I can grab a Fett or Vader or Gamorrean Guard or Yak or Yoda etc etc for the other side :) If a 12" figure costs $80 then one six times the size should be around $480 ;)

I predict between at least $1500-2000. I can't believe some people think this will sell for as low as $400-800. No way in hell will it be that cheap. And that's not even counting the insane shipping fee that will be tacked on.

No less than $799 is my gut feeling.

When I saw the pics to tease last night I thought $800-$1200, when compared to the other life size items they have done, the materials, cost and tooling - They did say it would ship in a crate full assembled so that means freight so add on another $100 for west coasters and $200-$300 for east coasters and I think landed we will be in the 1k to 1500 ball park.

Yeah I'm guessing in the $3k to $5k range.

I was only joking when I said $480 but if these are anywhere close to $5,000 it would be a total ripoff! These should be $500 so Gentle Giant can still over charge at $1,000 and do well. A penny over a grand is to much.

Zepp_Head
07-18-2013, 02:54 AM
Yeah these are going to be super expensive. No way they'll be under $1000. They aren't just scaled up Jumbo figures. The first post said they are made of fiberglass, which sounds pricey to my ears. That said, if I were rich I would populate my basement game room and bar with all the lifesize cantina aliens I could afford. ;) That would be sweet!

Dax
07-18-2013, 05:15 AM
OK, I never saw that coming! I think these definitely fall into the cool but crazy category. I think a life size blasters line would be kinda cool, relatively inexpensive to produce and wouldn't fall foul of gun control laws here in Australia.

As for the statues, as they are fibreglass I expect these would retail for somewhere around $2,500 to $3,000 each although I wouldn't be surprised to see them sell for more. I expect they would be a very limited run and how much was the old fibreglass Han in Carbonite statue?

I don't think the human characters would work very well as their features already look average blown up to 12" scale let alone life size. Vader (that better be a double telescoping sabre), Stormy, Fett, Artoo, Threepio and maybe a vinyl cape Jawa would be OK. Throw in a Han and Luke in Stormtrooper disguise maybe but I really can't see enough interest for even iconic characters like the Cantina four. I guess we'll see.

SoonerSean
07-18-2013, 08:26 AM
Curious why you wouldn't make them out of plastic with some limited assembly required to make it easier to sell, ship, and receive. I mean just the fact they say it will come assembled means some outrageous shipping charges even in the US. And then to make it out of fiberglass vs. a light plastic inflates the cost which limits the market.

I mean selling anything lifesize is already limiting your market since most people have space issues... making it a big heavy item that has to ship in a coffin sized box limits that much much much more.

Curious if, in the end, the intent is to just sell a small few and therefore the size/cost issues aren't a big deal, i.e. maybe they only want to sell 20 or less. But I do think they're short-changing themselves in that a lot more people would buy a lifesize figure if it was $1,000 or less and would come in a more managable shipping container. (Of course they know this - which makes me think it's not a market they want to be in and these are just a very very very limited special offering more for the wow factor and marketing than anything).

JadBean
07-18-2013, 09:28 AM
I think selling these pre-assembled is the wrong way to go. Surely there would be a way to disassemble them at the hips and ship them in a package half the size???

The 'human' figures would be much too large for me to own, but I MIGHT be able to pick up an R2, depending on the price. I'd really love it if R2's head were removable, so you could use him as storage.

I'm also hoping to see the scaled-up weapons available individually, perhaps on their own blister cards. I've left a comment saying such on GG's Facebook page, and I encourage you to do the same!

My wife just rolled her eyes when I showed her. Which I believe is wife code for "He's going to buy it no matter what I say".

I think cost and the obvious size is going to mean these are extremely limited. I'd be in for R2 if it's under $1,000. This is going to be like ordering furniture so shipping will be interesting. I ordered the SS Vader bust and it came in like three boxes and a couple of those were still pretty stout. I can't imagine getting a 5-6' item in a crate. It'd be like A Christmas Story and the leg lamp. "fra-gee-lay".

JadBean

That's about what I expected price-wise. For $2k, you could get the complete Efx film-accurate Stormtrooper suit. Or, for a LOT less, you could put together your own fan-made, film-accurate armor.

Now, if GG does a lifesize Kenner Yoda, that might be tempting. I'd think a Yoda would cost $500, tops, but who knows?

SoonerSean
07-19-2013, 02:34 PM
I'd have been sorely tempted at $1,000... but $1,500 is beyond the ceiling. Again, I just don't think they want to sell a lot of these hence the size, price, weight, and the fact that they are shipped assembled. The coffin sized containers this will take will add a lot to the cost and hassle - imagine getting one if you lived in an apartment or city environment.

I know plenty of people have gotten large statues before... so not meaning to make that a big deal. Just saying that these could have been offered in a lighter (less expensive) material and with the requirement for some minor assembly to lessen the shipping issues.

Hope those that can splurge enjoy them... they certainly look cool. I'll be fighting the urge if they do an R2.

I'm passing too. Why the need for fiberglass? Are they not able to use the same material used in action figures? $1500 to $2500 is way too much for a novelty item. Now if they offered Yoda for under $1000, maybe $800, I'd get it. I think the smaller figures like Yoda, R2, and Jawa could be more affordable with much cheaper shipping. I agree with you 100% at the price they are asking but if they were priced better I could see them all getting made. Just look back at this thread, while its a small sample just look how many people wanted to buy it. Then GG releases the price and almost everyone says no thanks. Had these been priced more realistic then more people would have bought them, the line would be successful and they would continue to make more characters, ie. Yak Face and Gamorrean Guard. How it stands now I only see it being very limited production and stopping after a few figures, maybe just Stormtrooper, Vader and Fett?

There's a pretty large disparity between $1500 and $2500, am I wrong?

I have to agree with most posters, fiberglass is a STUPID route to go, a hard plastic would make these affordable, easier and lighter to ship, less likely to be damaged during shipping, just all around a better way to go. Fiberglass is overkill and they have now priced these WAY out of range for most collectors. For crying out loud, the SS 1:1 Droids were around the same price with light-up functionality, and these have practically zero detail at all. Stupid. For under $1K I'm guessing they would have sold three times the amount they'll be able to sell at this ridiculous price point.

Its a real shame. I would've been all over this fella. The Droids too.

Back in 2009 when I purchased both C-3PO and R2-D2 from Sideshow.com; the pair cost me close to $12k after delivery ($5,950 & $5,450 respectively)! So... these are priced waaaay below Sideshows life-size statues... $1,500 - $2,500 is appropriate for an assembled fiber-glass six foot replica of my favorite childhood action figures! I assume GG will be releasing a life-size jumbo Boba Fett... with that said... will definitely pick up both Fett and a Stormtrooper to display in my game room (next to my loose 12" Jumbo collection).

At this price point... life-size Jumbo's will be just be out of reach for some collections... I used to collect prop replicas a few years back and enjoyed the hobby's exclusivity. With that said... not everyone can afford to drive a Porsche... just the bottom line. :'(

I am thinking the reason they are going to be fiberglass is the fact that regular plastic will turn yellowish overtime.

Two quick things, first comparing these to a $5,000 sideshow life size figure is like comparing the Porsche to a Yugo! Second, I can afford to buy a Porsche but if tomorrow Porsche said they were going to charge a million a car I would choose not to as it wouldn't be worth the price!

Actually... to my point... if Porsche started making sturdy plastic versions that you can assemble yourself at home for everyone to afford... I would trade in my Carrera for something that is more exclusive... not interested in owning or driving a Ford! :O)

LOL..... :)
Thats the difference between you and I, you buy things just as a status symbol ( as admitted above) where I could care less if everyone can afford these and would still buy one if reasonably priced. I don't have a Porsche because I hate the car but if I didn't and owned one I would care less if everyone else had it too as long as I liked mine. The same goes with my Star Wars collection.

I've seen a number of times people have questioned why not make these out of plastic instead and make them cheaper. I suspect though that it would actually make them more expensive and drastically effect the quality.

First the cost:
Items like your vinyl Santa that you get are cheap because they are produced in such vast numbers. Believe it or not, there will be more people buying a tubby guy in a red suit than would ever buy a Stormtrooper. Let's say it costs $20K to produce a steel mold for your Santa. You can reasonably sell 20K Santas therefore your cost of manufacturing is proportionally low (a Dollar per unit for those that are math challenged). Now if you use the same technique for your Stormtrooper but you only produce 1000 items then it's costing you $20 per unit just to cover the cost of the mold, let alone the materials and all the other expenses and your item starts to exceed the low price point you're aiming for. Believe it or not, small cost differences like that at the start of the process can have a significant impact to the final cost.

Comparatively speaking it's relatively inexpensive to make a fibreglass mold as it doesn't have to be made of steel and the manufacture process is pretty low tech so you don't need a lot of expensive machinery. Additionally you can make the items locally which helps save money as you're not shipping large items from the Orient to the US.

What about quality:
Blow mold plastic is not exactly designed to last forever. It is easily dented and can be difficult to paint plus it is usually a matt or semi-matt finish which we've already complained about with the Jumbo vintage line. Additionally as any vintage collector will tell you, plastic deteriorates over time it can become brittle and shatter, it can change colour with whites becoming yellow or pink, blue fades or becomes mottled, etc.

You'll get sharper detail from fibreglass than you would from a blow mold vinyl plus it will stand up to gravity a lot better. Could you imagine coming home from work in summer to find your Stormtrooper sagging over backwards because the plastic softened and the weight caused it to buckle? There's not much point in getting a bargain at $1000 that only lasts a few years instead of spending $2000 to get a quality item that will last as long as you will. For those that want a cheaper version I'd suggest sticking with the 12" Jumbo Vintage figures. Personally I was pleased to see GG pursue a quality finish on these items rather than try to go the cheap route and end up with a compromised product.

Looks like I need to start saving my money for Boba Fett, if they ever make him. It's definitely too pricy for me to get more than 1, but if I could, my top 5 list would be:

1. Boba Fett
2. Darth Vader
3. Luke (farmboy)
4. Chewbacca
5. Stormtrooper (by default since he's confirmed)

I hope GG is listening.

Some rather elitist, "neener-neener" comments up there. It's so very nice to make comments to belittle all us poor working stiffs for not wanting to spend $2000 on a piece of fiberglass and let everyone know how cool and rich you are with your fancy little sports car. How very nice for you. Are you gonna bust out a ruler next?

I must've been thinking of something else with my earlier comment about the SS Droids. But this is still way overpriced, just like every other item GG has announced in the last couple months.

I agree. It's in no way worth anything over $1,000 - let alone $2,500. From a development and manufacturing standpoint, it was machined from the files they created for the 12" figure of a vintage figure they didn't even create (so no sculpting or real artistry was involved to produce it), it's a simple five piece fiberglass casting and has a mind-numbingly simple paint job.

On top of this, it's still not even painted correctly. That brow kills it. Again, GG, this is what the vintage Stormtrooper is supposed to look like:

I know they really don't care much as they're clearly still making money, but GG lost my interest years ago. Their attitude can be summed up with an interaction I had way back at the celebration in LA. I was excited to meet and talk to their employees. I told them how much I enjoyed my dewback statue and they tried to pitch me on a life size yoda statue. It was nice, but I declined and thanked them for the offer, but I didn't even get a few steps out of what I guess they thought was hearing range before they started making fun of me. I didn't get it. I wasn't any different than thousands that had passed through, but it told me something about them. They just didn't care about their customer. In fact, were likely laughing at us all the way to the bank. So, go ahead GG, charge as much as you want. You're right, someone will pony up the dollars. Sadly, it's this kind of thing that makes our hobby an embarrassment. It goes from something pretty dang cool to something incredibly stupid once someone learns what it costs. $2300 for this piece of garbage statue. And you're fooling yourselves if you think their production/franchise costs justify the price. Way to pick 'em, Lucas. :|

$2,300 is a joke. EFX's complete replica armor is going to be at this price or likely less. Why would anyone pay that much for a giant hollow figure, when you can get film accurate armor with helmet and a mannequin for that price or less?

Rex Monument was $1400. How the heck do they get to $2,300 for this?

I think GG is losing their marbles with pricing lately. The Fett Maquette, increasing prices on the 12" vintage and now this. I thought they claimed it was going to be a mass-market release similar to their other items in terms of price, edition size and availability at retailers. I can't see retailers stocking extras of these at such a high price point.

It’s priced right about where I thought it would be. I thought about $2,000 or so and figuring they are offering Free Shipping which will could be around $200-$300 if it goes freight coast to coast. For all the people commenting “who would pay that much” – I think you will find that a fair amount of people will. I also collect 12” Hot Toys figures and some sell on a regular basis on the secondary market for over $1,000 and that’s for a 12” figure.

This is not going to be for everyone, I think the target audience is the high end collectors and if you collect higher end items, this is just par for the course. I personally think people who pay thousands of dollars for mass produced prints of actual artwork are a little crazy but if that’s what they collect and they can afford, who I am to tell them otherwise – They also think I am crazy trying to be a GG completest (outside of the monuments and bronze) but to each his own.

I don’t think they will sell 1,000 of them, but a few hundred would be my guess at least. I know Sansweet will get one!

No reason to start the name calling. If you don't like it or can't afford it, don't knock the collectors who do and can. I'm not gritting it, too much for my blood, but I'm envious of those that do get this. If this were around $1000, I'd be getting one.

My guess is that they are looking at the dimensions and size that are on the GG sale sheets (6'x26"x4") and factoring that in.

With it so far off, my guess it once GG has the shipping boxes done (if they end up doing it in boxes), it will update the retailers with actual sizes and go from there.

With the R2 monument it shipped in 2 big boxes and you could get it UPS. But even un-assembled it may end up shipping in one large crate and not boxed so it would still need to go freight I would think.

At the price and the onslaught of collectors giving GG flack for raising prices on all lines, I don't see them going further then the Stormie; possibly Vader but I'm guessing that's where this will end. Be a cool piece to own I'm sure but for a hunk of plastic that will most likely be hollow and on par with Halloween lawn ornaments for quality it's a easy pass for most.
This isn't a hard piece to create nor is it expensive, the price is definitely not justified.

Yea I saw that. I am interested in it. Surprised at almost zero response here on the board. Must be a very niche item......

You can get a 1:1 accurate Stormtrooper (wearable) armor for this price, so people might think of that as well. Do you want a big oversized vintage Stormtrooper statue or a really cool armor, that looks it just came off the screen.

The price is crazy for this piece. If it were more reasonably priced I'd be all over it.

I agree ...

...I don't see them going further then the Stormie; possibly Vader but I'm guessing that's where this will end.

I was thinking that they'd make a Boba Fett due the popularity of the figure and character. It's highly unlikely that I'd actually buy it (due to storage and price) but if there was ever one that I'd get, it'd be Boba Fett.

Yea I dont think there will be a Hoth the more I think about it... and seeing how dead the reception has been here for this... on the flip side,,,, I do like it regardless... I am going to mull it.... as it is I am going to get the Hoth stormtrooper in Jumbo and the Wampa

While the life sized figures are cool and all, I'll never have one. About the only thing I would buy is 4-LOM's laser rifle in this scale.

True, I could see a Fett and Vader being made now that I think about it but I'd still be a no go.

How sturdy is it once assembled and what holds the limbs in place?

It's very sturdy. Though the arms are too heavy to stay up. If you look closely at the leg pictures, they have pins, and the pins have a notch, like what holds a socket on a ratchet. The hole in the body to connect the arms looks like a key hole, the peg on the arm slides into the hole then down.

That would be great for everyone who wanted one, but do you think it's out of their licensing agreement, not that I know what they're licensed to produce? But wouldn't that be considered a prop?

Shabby_Blue
10-02-2014, 06:17 PM
A prop replica of what? It barely resembles the actual blaster weapons from the films. If Gentle Giant could produce larger scale versions of Han's blaster and the Imperial blaster as promotional keychains, then surely they could offer even bigger scale versions of those as 1:1 scale collectibles.

Well it's very convenient as far as shipping goes if you can buy one locally. And the price is a nice markdown compared to the original $2300 price.

But the real question is... why does Sam's Club have these? Did GG overestimate the demand for this line and have to dump leftover stock to a retail outlet?

Dax
12-26-2014, 04:26 PM
Perhaps yes but the more innocent explanation is, it's Christmas and these days people are inclined to splash out and reward themselves after a tough year. When it comes to selling things to people there is nothing more powerful than having the item there in your hands. Sure, internet shopping is super convenient, but how much harder is it to decide consciously not to purchase something when it is right there in your hands? Chances are that the combination of being able to take it home immediately (if you have a vehicle capable of carrying a coffin shaped object that is) and the discount off the regular price would help sell a number of extra units.

Can you imagine some rich guy walking in and saying "I'll take 6 of those. My front yard nativity scene is going to be frickin awesome this year!" :)

It is a decal. At least the one on display at Celebration was.

Yup, it's a big old' decal. Also, when you turn the head, it still clicks, only now it's loud as hell and sounds like grinding metal. EmperorJeff
08-24-2019, 07:41 PM
I'll admit that I was shocked when R2 ended up costing more than the earlier figures, but how much did people expect these to cost? Sideshow's lifesize Yoda is $2,499, K-2SO is $8,900, their R2 is $7,450. That's way more than Gentle Giant's (as well they should as they are way more detailed and are life like replicas), however if you are talking life size pieces, they are going to be pricy regardless.
