Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Weta Workshop announced today a partnership under which the innovative design company will develop and market a wide range of authentic prop replicas, collectibles and merchandise based on the upcoming films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The licensing agreement grants Weta access to the library of characters, settings, and stories for the two films. The first products in the collection will be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con at the Weta booth (#3513B) in July 2012, along with a limited number of exclusive pieces that will be available for purchase.

The Weta Workshop collection will be inspired by the scenery, characters and adventures Bilbo Baggins encounters on his remarkable journey in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, slated for release December 14, 2012. Fans and collectors will appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship behind each element of the collection, which will include collectible statues, dioramas, high-end jewelry and art prints.

"We are excited to be returning to Middle-earth,” said Weta Workshop's Academy Award-winning Creative Director, Richard Taylor. “We have been working with Peter Jackson and the product team on the design and production of the movies for the last four years, and we now get the chance to share our passion with fans and collectors. Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are created by the very same artists who have worked on the two films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth."

Pretty much expected, but great news none the less. Weta and LOTR/Hobbit are synonymous anymore.

Looking ahead, here's what Tim Launder, head honcho of Weta's collectibles arm, has revealed is on tap for the remainder of 2013 ...

October has arrived and we'll be launching over 20 new products before Xmas; prop replicas, collectibles, art prints, jewelry, t-shirts, leather goods and a few surprises.

We have already promised to launch the following new products from the Desolation of Smaug in October :

Daggers of Tauriel
Bow and arrow of Tauriel
Thranduil
Tauriel

The first production run of these 4 items will be in-stock in Oct - Nov, so if you wish to get your order shipped before Xmas, we recommend you order immediately. The second production run will arrive in stock in Dec / Jan, however it is unlikely these will be shipped out in time for Xmas.

The same goes with any of our other in-stock products, if you wish to ensure delivery before Xmas, we strongly recommend placing your orders by 22 Nov. Last year we shipped out orders on the 12th of Dec and many of them did not arrive until a month later, due to the Xmas postal rush.

Strangely, CoolToyReview didn't seem to cover Weta at all in their San Diego Comic Con coverage this year, despite the huge, 15 foot long Smaug head that loomed over the convention hall and all the new stuff shown. Anyhow, here are some highlights for your viewing pleasure ...

http://i58.tinypic.com/2a5k7r4.jpg

The Dragon's illuminated eye opened, looked around and blinked. His throat was also illuminated.

Onto the statues and other goodies ...

Revealed but no pricing or edition size info yet was the huge Smaug the Terrible statue, which uses Weta's largest base size yet, measuring almost two feet wide. Official pictures will no doubt be released soon, but for now, here's some photography from the convention showroom floor.

http://i57.tinypic.com/34zagrr.jpg

Smaug the Terrible will be limited edition and release in Q1, 2015. ES and pricing TBC ...

_________

There will also be a smaller version of the same character available for more limited budgets and display spaces.

Smaug, King Under the Mountain (already affectionately dubbed The Smauglet by some collectors) will release later this year and be open edition. It is reported to be somewhere in the range of 9" wide.

http://i62.tinypic.com/dzicn6.jpg

Weta has a newsletter (http://www.wetanz.com/news/newsletter) that can be signed up for to get alerts on when these statues will become available.

I'd definitely buy a statue of Dain Ironfoot and I'd also want to see a nameless dwarf warrior in full body armor:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f1Dne0Vzwi4/UdcIg5YHGXI/AAAAAAAAR14/4ArkbSubO0I/s1600/wgQCTeJ+-+Imgur.jpg

If they made them in such a way that we could army-build them, that would be amazing.
