View Full Version : Weta Lord of the Rings Statue Line (New)

Just thought I'd start a thread for the new Weta LOTR statue line. This line is different than their previous SSC collaboration, in that the statues are a bit smaller and are (more than likely) not to scale based on size dimensions that we know of. So far, there's just the Gollum statue that is already out and a Gandalf statue that should be coming out later this month (January). The pricing is pretty fair $65-70 and is comparable to what you would get from other statue companies for items this size, I think - a good comparison might be a GG bust, for example.

Gollum (http://www.wetanz.com/gollum/from/brand)

I have Gollum and was really impressed with how clean he was. All the paint lines were sharp and there was hardly any paint-bleed or sloppy areas. As a painter myself, this is a huge selling point for me with this line - I'll touch-up items myself here and there, but I didn't have to do any work with Gollum. The pose is also really nice and the facial expression looks sad and creepy at the same time. Overall, this is a solid 8.5/10 statue.

Gandalf the Grey Figure (http://www.wetanz.com/gandalf/from/brand)

Gandalf should come out soon and I have him pre-ordered. All things considered, it's a great thoughtful pose that gives more character than just a combat pose. Really looking forward to this piece and am hoping that Weta has some other statues lined-up after this. It was around the time that Gollum shipped, that Weta revealed the pics for Gandalf, so hopefully this means we might get the next statue's pics soon.

It will be interesting to see where this line heads next.

Gandalf and Gollum are good choices to lead up to The Hobbit; which hopefully they have the licensing for. I could then see Elrond, Frodo, and maybe Legolas as they all are due to appear in The Hobbit and could help bridge the gap.

Ideally, I'd really like this line to continue as far as the previous SSC/Weta line did.

Just got Gandalf. He's another solid release. Obviously not in scale with Gollum, but still a very well done display piece - small enough to take up the same amount of space as a GG bust, but not so large, that you have to make an effort to find space for him. Paint is pretty good and the skin tone is above average for this scale. Overall, I'd give it a 9/10.

I can't wait to see what the next release is.

I've also just jumped on this line - nice small pieces and not too expensive. Nicely detailed and painted.

Managed to grab the Gollum but the Gandalf sold out before I could order it - apparently they are getting them back in stock mid-year according to Tim at Weta. Should be releasing news on the 3rd statue soon

Been REALLY impressed with the communication and dealing with Weta in general. Dealing with Weta really puts GG to shame and shows what great customer service is all about. Determined to buy more from Weta in the future.

I'm glad to see more LOTR pieces being released - I love my SSC/Weta pieces. I'm not jumping into this line, but I couldn't resist the order on Orthanc since the original is way out of my reach. I'm hoping they tackle Barad Dur at some point. Would be nice to have both towers.

I totally missed out on the LOTR/Weta stuff back in the day because I was too into SW at that time, so it's nice to have this chance to pick up some items directly from the guys that worked on LOTR. Sure, GG may use actual scans from props and stuff or have access to things from the movies, but Weta is LOTR - these guys lived it for years. It's amazing watching the Blu-Ray behind-the-scenes stuff to see how much Weta did to make LOTR fully realized and it's an honor to be able to purchase items directly from that source as opposed to secondary collectible companies or the like.

Have you guys seen the book released last year: Weta, the Collector's Guide (http://www.wetanz.com/the-collector-s-guide-2011/from/type)? It's 300 and some pages long and fully half of it is devoted to the LOTR collectibles range.

I've seen that book before and if it was just LOTR stuff, I'd probably pick it up. I like Weta, but some of their stuff just isn't my style.

Fair enough. :)

Just in case anyone reading this hasn't yet had a chance to look through it, the book basically depicts every LOTR collectible that company has produced up until the middle of last year and a includes a number of unproduced prototypes and stories. Most of the statues get a page each and some get double page spreads. It's basically a huge annotated gallery with background stories and sculptor profiles. While all the licenses Weta has had are included, many are represented by no more than a single spread. The LOTR stuff covers about 150 pages and totally (and appropriately) dominates the book, being easily half of it and maybe even a bit more. :) There's a large appendix in the back with everything listed in full, including edition sizes, artists and other info. Pretty good value for $25 I think, but I'm hopelessly biased, admittedly.

Hard sell all done. ;)

I might have to pick it up sometime, then. I missed all the those Weta/SSC statues because I was too into Star Wars back then, so it might be nice to at least have some good imagery of those items.

EE have a statue sale on at present, Buy 1 get 1 40% off and Gandalf is included. Might be a good time to jump if you have been on the fence about this statue. Shame they don't have Gollum in stock or it would have been a perfect deal for LOTR fans. Lots of other cool stuff from other companies though. :)

Yes! My only complaint is the long wait - these things should be quite easy to churn out quickly being metal with just a touch of paint. I'm very hopeful of some of those Rohan designs that were mentioned.

And I would still really like to hear what the next statue will be, assuming they're stil carrying on with that.

Wish granted. :D

Price is creeping up, $5 at a time. Still worth it, though - this one is definitely a buy.

He'll look good with Gandalf - two guys just hanging out smoking leaf.
