The description of the SDCC GG 12inch Vintage Stormtrooper from Facebook:

Just like they were when you were a kid, only BIGGER! Gentle Giant is proud to debut their new line of vintage Star Wars Action figure reproductions with the release of this classic Empire Strikes Back Stormtrooper.

Digitally scanned from mint 3 ¾” Kenner originals and reproduced to a substantial 12” tall. Nothing has been overlooked. Injection molded and made of durable plastics, this jumbo figure includes a faithfully reproduced blaster and is fully articulated! That’s not all, this classic Kenner creation comes packaged on a 1980, Empire Strikes Back inspired blister card with a plastic outer clam shell to help protect and display this limited edition convention exclusive!

....Really??? Carding a 12inch figure??? If they did that in proportion wouldn't the blister card the size of a standard poster?? Imagine the size of the clamshell. If that is seriously what they are doing, I am going to have to get one. They will need a semi to hold the 1500 they are bringing to the con. HAHAHA! That cant be right....

Hey if they card it and stick it in an accurate and proportional card (poster-size)...with a clam shell. Exponentially upscale replica of the carded original...I am all over it!

Anything short of that...PASS. I don't see it happening.

YES! A 12" Replica figure of a figure that was originally released for A NEW HOPE during EMPIRE STRIKES BACK 30TH Anniversary!

No Boba Fett, No Vader, No Lando, No Han in carbonite, NOTHING so far from the actual movie including SIDESHOW! I hope we get some good things for Celebration!

This whole idea is just another example of a company trying to do way too much. Making 12" plastic (not even resin) figures, rings, zombie troopers and Magma Troopers! Just stick to what you are known for and what you are best at: screwing up human-likenesses, lack of concern for your target customers and delayed products. Oops, did I just say that?! I meant OT and PT mini busts, statues and maquettes. Please, no more EU either, just so much more needs to be done from the six movies.

I had top double check that it wasn't April 1st.....

Well, I guess I'm glad for those of you that like it and got the money to spend on it....to each his own.

I personaly am surprised that after crap like the Kustomz line and theyr attempt at the Classic bust line, that they still try silly stuff like this....trying to be bigger and bigger instead on focusing on what they got that works....they are trying to branch out a bit too much....I think it's backfiring on them.

It could catch on with vintage collectors. There is a large community who collects that stuff. I see this line having potential.

I do understand...there are others out there with different interests and there is a huge VINTAGE community so you might be right...I'm just floored about the direction they take sometimes....they act like a struggling company that is trying different things to stay afloat when that is not where they are at....now I read at GGC that the scaled helmet line is not going to pan out?

Heck!....it never even got off the ground? How they heck could they know if it pan out or not?

Wow, this is a really cool idea! And that's speaking as someone who owns almost no Gentle Giant products, but is a big collector of all the action figure lines in 4" and 12". What is the price they're charging on their site? The link doesn't work since I'm not a member. I hope they have some left after the con! Too bad it's not Boba Fett though since that's one of the awesomest vintage figures and would be a real trip to see in 12-inch. This is a great way to make you feel like a kid again since the figure is now scaled for a 2-foot tall human. Well that was probably too young to play with Star Wars figures.

Just to make clear: you guys know this isn't the same sculpt as the vintage 12" stormtrooper, right? It's the upscaled 3-3/4" sculpt?

I personally find it to be a strange collectible in the size range; the likeness isn't that great for something that will be a foot tall, and how the hell would you collect multiples of these?

But hey, there seems to be some excitement for it, so...*shrug*

I actually kind of like it. I see it as a giant 3D poster of a carded vintage stormie. I think it would display nicely on a wall but I wouldnt have picked the stormtrooper as my first choice. Since I think displaying more then one would take up too much room im tempted to wait for another fig but I'm not sure they will have a second one. Maybe at CV but not after that I wouldnt think. I think vader would be great. Classic icon figure and a ton of vinyl for his cape. I cant wait to get one of these AFA http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I like the concept. Having been a child of the 60's/70's I am a fan/collector of vintage as well as modern stuff. The fact that it's carded vintage style makes it even more appealing to me. Having said that, I'm passing on this. Seeing as how, according to GG, this is the first in their new line, I can't see collecting an entire set of these. Will they stop at the original 12 figures or will they keep going? I just don't have the room.
However, if they release Vader in this style, I'll be all over it.

Weren't the 12" figs $20? Being that these are plastic and not resin, how can they justify selling these for $85? $40 maybe, but $85? That is more than 4x the cost of the 12" figures from the days of the mid to late 90's.

Nope, these are plastic. Taken from the first post:

Digitally scanned from mint 3 ¾” Kenner originals and reproduced to a substantial 12” tall. Nothing has been overlooked. Injection molded and made of durable plastics, this jumbo figure includes a faithfully reproduced blaster and is fully articulated! That’s not all, this classic Kenner creation comes packaged on a 1980, Empire Strikes Back inspired blister card with a plastic outer clam shell to help protect and display this limited edition convention exclusive!

I like this piece but not for $85. Maybe if it was $50. $85 just seams a little steep for what it is.

Weren't the 12" figs $20? Being that these are plastic and not resin, how can they justify selling these for $85? $40 maybe, but $85? That is more than 4x the cost of the 12" figures from the days of the mid to late 90's.

I believe these are resin. It's a resin statue of a Vintage trooper. It's not a toy.

Nope, these are plastic. Taken from the first post:

Hey everyone! I am in Hong Kong right now....but am really excited that we have finally shared the announcement of our new line!!! These figures are really cool! (if I can say so myself!) The backer cards measure about 14" W x 19" H and are in a clamshell that you can open to play with the figure or reseal to keep in the packaging. We even kept the original legal lines on the back of the figure's legs from 1977! (new legal on their feet!) Also, you will find that these figures will have the hexagon hole on the bottom of their feet just like the originals.

The price, welll yeah...these guys are collectible! Limited run and well, while they are plastic, there is still tooling and development costs involved. Look in the upcoming issue of ToyFare for an article about this new line.

We kept the original 12 Back for the the ESB cards. We have a real treat in store for SDCC. For all of you vintage collectors, this line will truly not disappoint!

Holy CRAP a 14" W x 19" H backer card with a resealable clamshell? I'm in on these! Great news VS. Love the other extras of the old copyright on leg, hex hole in feet and original 12 back on the card! Sound really cool.

What are the plans for the line? Make all original 12 and see how it goes?

I pulled the trigger on the Stormtrooper. There is a certain coolness factor making me not want to be left out in the cold on this one.

Makes me laugh at collectors who moan about GG statues yet are willing to drop cash on a large plastic figure on cardboard that imo isn't even as good a sculpt as the orginal figure that I remember. I'd been thinking about this line and how it came out of left field.....none of those that have "inside tracks" into GG above us "mere mortals" ever gave any hint of this so it seemed like it was a surprise for most.

Several thoughts came to mind.....

1.Found it odd that they have the Kenner and HASBRO logo on back. I am going to guess that this is part of the reason why the cost is so high. Maybe they had to pay some money to HASBRO for going into their area.

2.Could HASBRO's involvement be why this actually seems to be on time? Maybe they used HASBRO factories instead of GG's usual turtle-slow factories.

I am still baffled by the price on this. $85? Even if it was solid plastic, which I am going to guess it won't be (I could be wrong)....even if it was solid plastic...with the cost of other products that require much more tooling, development and materials and sell for so much less. I am wondering if it's just because it's GG and they know most GG collectors are willing to pay high-end prices even if the item would normally sell for $30 or $40.

Could it be the licensing issues with the original?

I think it's kind of weird....

and like the helmet line....they told us all these great wonderful plans they had....they showed us all these cool helmets and what? 3 years or so later and absolutely nothing.

I'm sure the 1st two will come out but wonder if this will be a quick dying line like so many other attempts by GG

BlueSnaggletooth

Keep in mind that MSRP is $85. That means that the regular releases will be available thru ADs for 20-25% off. I plan on grabbing them from my LCS for around $60 each, which is a reasonable price.

The scaled helmet line was destined to fail. Master Replicas already did all the interesting ones (with the exception of the McQuarrie Concepts). Did the scaled helmet line keep MR from going down the drain? It was not a difference maker. Just like it wouldn't be for GG.

The vintage line has a number of directions to go. We know for sure there's a Luke, Sandpeople, Jawa and Boba in the future. 99% certain based on VS' comments that all original 12 are in the works.

To be honest, I'm hoping they do all 21 original figures in this format. Heck, they could even do the three-legged Artoo from the Droid Factory playset (make it an exclusive) and the Dianoga from the Death Star Playset (and maybe even a Blue Snags from the Sears cantina...). After that, they could pick and choose.

From ESB, I would release:

IG-88, Bossk, Dengar, 4-LOM, Zuckuss
Snowtrooper
Lando
TIE Fighter Pilot
Hoth Han
Bespin Leia
Bespin Luke
Cloud Car Pilot
AT-AT Driver
2-1B and/or FX-7 would be cool

From ROTJ, I'd go with:

Jedi Luke
Leia Boushh
Endor Han
Wicket
Biker Scout
Max Rebo Band
Ree Yees
Squid Head
Bib Fortuna
Yak Face
Admiral Akbar
Lando Skiff Guard
Gamorrean Guard

I will be picking up two Stormies for sure. I might grab a couple of Jawas too (if it's the vinyl cape version that will be pretty darn cool).

Regarding the mini bust line, most of the major characters have been done. There aren't many characters left that would create excitement or be a difference-maker, business-wise. GG needed to go in a new direction to have any hope of reliving the glory days. I've got high hopes for this line. If edition sizes are kept low (therefore demand outweighs supply) GG might have a hit on their hands...

Seems all the hype of SDCC is being put around this new line, which is great for those of you excited for it.

But the ignoring of giving a shipping update of no less than 18 products is just baffling to me. July/August/September schedule???? Anyone????

Curious if the regular releases in the 12" line will take a year and a half to make it into collector's hands....

Isn't it just SOP by now to add 6 months to the estimate arrival date? I wonder if GG produced these in Mexico or Canada (since not much gets made in the US) if it would improve the production time.

People must live in warehouses to even be considering collecting a whole line of these. These things are huge in their packaging. I barely have room for my minis busts. Plus, they're way to overpriced even at a moderate discount IMO.

Some of you guys seem VERY bitter about this line. The delays make sense since workers in China are getting smart(striking) so were paying more and waiting longer to get our products. Soon enough GG will be in India.

Why can't some of you let others just collect what they want without making digs at them for not being smart, etc? I am sorry these don't appeal to all of you but being that I cut my teeth on these back in '77, I am more than happy to have a chance at these. Stick to what you like. I was kind of scratching my head at this line but to tell the truth, I do find it kind of interesting. I don't think I'll buy the Stormtrooper but I may buy a Fett if they do one for CV. Unless they get into ESB and do an AT-AT Driver, though, I don't know how many past Boba I'd buy.

Although, of the first 12 vintage Kenner figs, I wouldn't mind having all but the Tusken, Jawa and DS Commander. Those first 12, if you get all of them, and they're all $85 a pop, that's $1020 plus shipping. That's a lot of scratch.

Hey man, sorry about that. I have tried to not make any cut downs at those that are interested in this line.

Regardless of my thoughts on the line itself and GG....I got nothing against those that like it or find it interesting.

Disregard those comments....I think it's just some venting frustration at GG and letting it out wherever they can.

I agree with you brother. I don't think anyone truly means to belittle someone for what they collect. Hell, my whole family thinks I am crazy for collecting what all of us on here thinks is cool. I also think it is just people's frustration about delayed product. When they announce something someone doesn't like, one tends to believe that the undesired product is the reason for the delays of the desired product. That is how I feel at least. I think these things are ridiculous and a deterrent to the resources needed to put out the long list of stuff most people want.

I'd never have a pop at anyone who wants to collect these. In my case, I'm not interested in them whatsoever but if you its what you are interested in then I've got no problem with someone spending their cash on these.....I think where the frustration is, is that GG are bigging up this line yet cannot seem to get out what products are already on their release list (I've been waiting on the Luke statue forever but thats a moan for another topic)

If it wasn't so ridiculous expensive, I'd get the Fett at C5 just for kicks but have no inclination to get any others.

I still think that $85 for a plastic only 12" figure is screwed up.

Sideshow makes 12", articulated, with different materials and decent sculpt figures for just a bit over this.

Unfortunately GG just labels "special", "limited" on stuff and expect us to swallow it for whatever price they think they can get out of us.

As for the line, if you like them, knock your socks off and go off and get them, it is your money and you can do with it what you want.

These are not just my cup of tea and I would rather spend my money elsewhere. After getting all of these on the original 12 back card in '78, personally I would rather have an original 12 back vintage figure anyways. Besides, they seem to be priced way to high for what you are getting.

Just a couple of thoughts to ponder about this line specifically and Gentle Giant in general.

Firstly part of the cost will be due to licensing arrangements. You may have noticed on the back of the card the Hasbro logo as well which will be there because Hasbro (Kenner) would own the rights to the likeness of the figure, plus the card design because it so closely resembles their work from the 70s and 80s. Certainly some form of payment would be going to Hasbro for the use of their products and that will end up going on the final price of this line.

Now theoretically Hasbro could have produced this line themselves if they were so inclined seeing as they owned the base material however this is very much a collector oriented product and Hasbro are more about mass retail so it doesn't quite fit with their strategy. Personally I think Gentle Giant have a better attention to detail for collectors so I'm happy they are bringing this product to market and not Hasbro in this instance.

There may even be some form of payment to Sideshow as well depending on the details of licensing agreements. If Sideshow have the license to produce "12 inch Star Wars action figures" then this product from Gentle Giant would infringe on their agreement with Lucasfilm. Of course, they may have been willing to allow a select product to be produced by another company if there was some form of financial recompense involved. Then again, Sideshow's license may be more specifically worded and be for "12 inch realistic action figures with material outfits and more than 5 points of articulation" in which case there may be some leeway for Gentle Giant not to have to pay additional fees.

Now in regard to Gentle Giant as a company it's important to keep in mind that although they manufacture great products for fans and collectors, at their core they are a business and as such their primarly goal is to make a profit. There is nothing wrong with that at all so please don't take my statement as a criticism. Now as a manufacturer they tread a fine line between appeasing fans with information, marketing prospective upcoming product, and meeting the needs of their retail partners.

What does that all mean? Well, for instance they might advertise the fact that they are going to manufacture small scale helmets for collectors. Products are announced, images are shown, pre-production work and costing is completed, and prior to production no doubt they would approach their retail partners to gauge interest in the product. Let's presume that for product X they need to sell 3000 units to break even and 5000 units is the upper limit of cost effectiveness for production.

Unfortunately word comes back from their retail partners that they are only interested in purchasing a total of 1500 units. No doubt Gentle Giant would revisit the marketability of the product and intial feedback from their retail partners is that demand is weak for this item. If Gentle Giant determine that there is insufficient market to move at least an additional 1500 units themselves then purely on a mathematical basis it is obvious the product is not viable and won't be produced.

Sometimes this might occur simply because the market just doesn't like the concept of an item. Othertimes unforseen external circumstances might be a factor, say like a Global Financial Crisis for instance. Products might be shelved till situations change or market demand increases. Let's say that in a couple of years from now Lucasfilm try to revive the brand by launching new movies (Star Wars: Jedi Avatar 3D), this could lead to increased demand and previously shelved products again become viable.

The bottom line is, that if Gentle Giant can make money from an item or line then of course they will do what they can to bring that product to market. If an item is marketed but ultimately not released it will be because it simply could not be manufactured to the quality or volume required for it to be profitable.

So anyone that is concerned a new 12" figure line is impacting on their particular favourite product and retarding its release can be assured that such is not the case. Companies like Gentle Giant are large enough and flexible enough to produce more than one product simultaneously and will do what they can to make items for us to buy. So long as there are enough of us interested in them http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Personally I can't see more than a small number of characters being viable for this 12" line due primarily to cost and scale. I think the concept of the first 12, Fett and a couple of other figures is quite good but I just can't see there being sufficient demand for say a 12" Admiral Ackbar figure for instance. I would buy a 12" Death Squad Commander simply because it is part of the set of first 12 figures, but if it was simply one of a handful of characters randomly produced I would probably not look twice at it.

Hoth Rebel Soldier? Not a chance I'm interested in that. 4-LOM? One of my favourite action figures but I doubt there is enough demand for him to be part of this line. Imperial Commander, Leia Hoth, 2-1B, Wicket, Yak Face, all cool action figures but honestly, not viable 12" figures for this line. Outside of the first 12, Fett, and possibly the 4 original Cantina Creatures the only other real options I believe would be a Snowtrooper, Biker Scout, and Luke Stormtrooper and that is all. Perhaps time will prove me wrong http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's why I liked the idea of a top 10 poll.... While I LIKE the idea of having the first 12 I really don't care to buy R2, C-3po, chewy. han or Leia. Especaily if were gunna be limited to certain characters offered I would rather see other figures take their place maybe a cantina 4 pack or something. I'd be happy if GG said were gunna make 10 or 15 characters in this line and were gunna let you the collectors pick who they are. Based on what's been said/shown that's not happening. In any case I'm sure I'll be getting these but I will have to pick and choose.

At the moment I suspect that the images on the back of the card are actually of regular scale vintage figures, so I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet about the Jawa and his cape. I'm sure VS mentioned somewhere we'll be looking at a vinyl cape.

Why do I think they are smaller scale figures on the back? Firstly look at the Stormtrooper and the black strip across his brow is much thicker than what was shown on the 12" Scale figure. Instead it looks much more like the regular vintage figure. If you look at the Sand People figure the way the cape folds around his arms would seem to indicate a smaller scale. Vinyl on a larger scale would behave differently and probably not bow in so much.

The big thing for me though is the lighting. It's hard to light a larger object sufficiently and still maintain that density of shadow from the character without flooding other areas with light. So I think what we're seeing on the cardback is the original vintage figures they used to do the scanning and upsizing to 12" scale.

As for the Gentle Giant statues and busts pictured on the card I'm OK with it. It's still done in the style of the old cardbacks which had playsets and so on pictured underneath the figures. Now if they were advertising Harry Potter busts I'd be rather miffed, but it's all Star Wars and besides, how many people are going to display these with the back facing forwards?

Interestingly we can now get a feel for the layout on the back and it seems obvious that only 12 figures will be featured on the back of the card. Personally I was hoping for an old style Fett picture to be included with the 12 but alas this does not seem likely. Still, who knows what Gentle Giant are about to surprise us with next!

I became a Gentle Giant Premier Member ($60.00!) just so I could get my hands on this line.

I also want to know if the Boba Fett is confirmed and will this be available to GG Premier Members? Anyone?

I am not a loose collector but there is something iconic about the early figures that is a beauty to behold both in and out of the package. I think I am more excited about this line than the Vintage Collection. I know everyone is always talking about improving and updating the figures but I want my childhood toy! I know that if they made direct reprints of the original figures it might upset vintage collectors. I think this is a very plausible solution to fans who played with these when they first came out. I do not see all of the original figures coming out but I will collect what is released.

Oh yeah, I want a vintage style Chewie, Greedo, and Walrus Man...the original figure (colors) are from a simple time in my life. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

These things didn't interest me in the least until I saw that 3PO. Love the droids, so may pick this one up. If they do R2, I hope the body detail is tampo'd on, istead of being a sticker.

What? A big head Han Solo! I almost creamed myself! (Okay...in regards to this cardback and the proposed figures, I will believe it when I see it...)

I am beginning to think that GG is just putting these on the cardback to make it look more like the vintage cardbacks. I would kill to get all of these (…or at least seriously maim!)

Once again, I must say that while I like the 2010 Vintage Collection put out by Hasbro, I would prefer a reprint Kenner figure in the original scale on a vintage style cardback. Until Hasbro does that I will have to settle for what I can get and Gentle Giant appears to be the one that can do that.

R2D2 .... aren't these daily reveals a bit obvious. We know what the next few will be....

Although, I am intrigued to see what two items will fill the 2 empty black spots below.

So I admit I'll probably pick a few of these up, but this daily reveal of a figure, a sculpt burned into our brains since kids... is kind of... not that exciting.
Today they posted Artoo. They've already said they're producing the first 12 so in the coming days we'll see Ben, Leia, Death Squad Commander, Chewie and Vader.

Just not too exciting for me seeing a daily reveal of a product that's been around for over 30 years. I mean, sure they're larger, but you'd never know by just a small pic.

With GG making 12" figures and that other company making piggy bank busts I have to wonder what the licensing rules are. They dont seem pretty strict.

You need to be a PGM premium member to order this at this moment. Later on it will go on sale to the "general public" I think.

I love the whole idea of this line. I just wish GG was caught up on all of the LATE product that is out there, before starting a new line of product.

I would love to collect the whole line, but storing these giants will take up some room.

From Toyfare, according to the following Web site (which I've never heard of before): Gentle Giant is creating massive 12-inch versions of the vintage Boba Fett, Stormtrooper and Walrus Man 3 3/4" figures.

If these are reasonably easy to get, I will buy everything from Star Wars and most of ESB. These remind me (for whatever reason) of the jumbo size Garbage Pail Kids cards they had when I was kid. Just literal blow-ups of the originals.

What a great idea--doesn;t infringe on the collect-ability of the Kenner 4" pieces, hits us older guys right in the sweet spot and honors the incredibly great innovation of the Kenner years.

I'm all the way on board.

I know some collectors think these will take up space...however if these are all you are going to collect then it is perfect for a (vintage) Star Wars fan to jump on board. I LOVE IT!

I can not wait to get my hands on Walrus Man! His original colors are so classic!

Still wondering if Boba Fett will be available to GG Members or only available at the convention? Anyone?

I think a Gentle Giant rep said in another thread that all convention exclusives are available to Premium Guild members as pre-orders, so Boba should be available to order after Comic Con, I'm guessing.

And good point about the space. Other than an R2 focus, I pretty much only collect Galactic Heroes (seemingly nearly dead now, in terms of OT product) and the much-maligned and no defunct Mighty Muggs. So I can make room for every single one of these somewhere, as well as a couple of extras to display loose at work.

I'm just worried that we'll get all of the SW characters and the line will die before much if any Jedi figures are released. That would really make me sad. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wish! http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I admit these 12" do look pretty cool, the prototype anyways. http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'd rather have the real deal with the vintage figures 3-3/4. With all GG's delays, quality issues, and lack of pieces from other films http://threads.rebelscum.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif, I think these are a waist of money, time and effort, on GG behalf, they should be more concerned with getting the existing product out and fixing the giraffe neck and shrinkage issues. I think the finished product will be, well to be nice, underwhelming.

I am sorry, really sorry if these jumbo figures are working for some of you, but everytime they reveal another one I get more pi55ed off. Given the whole history of GG to date, this is still nothing short of baffling. So (I cannot remember what thread here) we were saying there were X amount of exclusives left to announce this year, and we had all kinds of hopes and speculation. Are all those exclusives these retarded a55 jumbo figures? I can't wrap my head around how stupid this is. I need a drink.

Guess Walrus Man will be in "Series 2" as well, since he's not on the back of the card and spots are all taken.
